It's that time of the year again, when the baby magpies are learning to fly. They take off from the family nest & flap to the ground, but haven't developed the strength to fly up again. This is completely normal and the whole maggie family look after the baby on the ground. These birds do NOT need rescuing, even if you can't see the parents. The family will protect & feed them until they are strong enough to fly.
If they are injured, please feel free to bring them into the clinic, otherwise leave them to be with their families, as nature intended.

Getting a new pet from a rescue organisation is a great idea, as it gives unwanted pets a loving home. Ollies Legacy here in Bendigo does a great job. "Ares" the kitten visited us this week for desexing, microchip & vaccination, to prepare him to be available for adoption to his forever home. In this photo he is being cuddled in a coccoon during his recovery from his anaesthetic.

Two days ago, Ruby was a pound dog in outback Queensland, in a flood affected area, with no real future. Our client, Sarah, saw her photo online, had her flown to Victoria yesterday and now she has a loving home. The smile on her face is after her first taste of liver treats here at the clinic, after her health check. Lucky Ruby! Thank you, Sarah 😀

🐾DEXTER🐾
There's so much that we could say about Dexter that it's hard to know where to start. He has been a patient here for many years now and over that time has accumulated more and more health conditions, such as:
- Atopy (skin allergies, in his case at least partly caused by food)
- Osteoarthritis
- Diabetes
- Chronic Bronchitis
As a result of his diabetes he developed cataracts in both eyes, one of which had to be removed when it developed glaucoma. His remaining eye is treated daily with eye drops to prevent the development of glaucoma.
He also suffers from chronic pancreatitis (also a result of his diabetes).
Add to this a few dentals over his life time and it is fair to say that Dexter is well known to all staff at our clinic! Luckily, he is one of the happiest boys you'll meet so he loves it here and is always thrilled to come for a visit.
Dexter is truly fortunate to have a caring and dedicated owner who has taken his health concerns in her stride. Dexter currently receives twice daily insulin injections, two different types of eye drops, a puffer for his bronchitis, and a special diet (to try to balance his food allergies, diabetes and pancreatitis as well as we can), as well as monthly injections to help his arthritis and skin. On top of all this, Dexter's owner regularly checks his blood glucose to monitor his diabetes. When all is said and done, we think Dexter is one lucky boy.
Now that you've met Dexter, say hi to him next time you see him- he'd probably love to say hello!

Have you recently had, or are expecting, a litter of puppies or kittens? Have you organised their vaccination and microchip appointment yet? If not, here's what you need to know:
In Victoria, puppies and kittens are required by law to be microchipped prior to being sold. At $95 for a litter of 3+, our vacc and chip appointments include a general health check, a C3 vaccination for puppies or an F4 vaccination for kittens, and microchip implantation.
Prior to your appointment, you will need to make sure you have obtained a source number from the pet exchange register (https://per.animalwelfare.vic.gov.au/). We cannot implant a microchip without a valid source number.
Once you have a source number, give us a call on 5447 0172 to book your pups or kittens in. We recommend that they receive their first vaccination at 6 weeks of age

How cute is this?
Habib was a very good boy for his vaccination, worming and check up appointment.
If you have recently welcomed a new puppy, they will need booster vaccinations and regular worming. If you unsure what this involves, please give us a call on 5447 0172 so that we can book you an appointment to get your pup up-to-date

Is your pet up to date with its vaccinations?
While most puppies and kittens have already had their first vaccination by the time you take them home from the breeder, they still require two more booster vaccinations at roughly 10 and 14 weeks of age.
Adult dogs and cats require yearly vaccination to ensure they continue to be protected against preventable, and potentially deadly, diseases.
Your vaccination appointment includes a general health check and is a great opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns you may have in regards to your pet.
If your pet is due for vaccination, please call the clinic on 5447 0172 and one of our friendly staff will help get you sorted 😊
