Unlocking the Mystery of Dog Body Language 😇

This ladder of communication can help you gain a better understanding of your dog's feelings and help them tackle any situation with confidence!

Understanding your dog's body language is the key to effective communication.

By monitoring your dog, you can intervene when they are on the lower steps to help remove them from the situation, so their feelings do not escalate. Keeping them safe, comfortable and confident.

From wagging tails to flattened ears, dogs have a rich repertoire of non-verbal cues that reveal their emotions. By learning to interpret these cues and using the ladder of communication, you can create a strong bond with your dog, build trust, and help them approach challenges with self-assurance.

Want to learn how to manage your dog so they don't escalate to reactive behaviour?

Feeling guilty about skipping your dogs walk in the cold weather?

Here's some alternative to walking that are great for your dog, and even provide more enrichment than your average walk does!

Did you know that using positive reinforcement to train your dog not only strengthens your bond but also yields better results?

Reward-based training methods are scientifically proven to be more effective and humane.

Instead of instilling fear and anxiety through punishment, why not build trust and confidence with treats, praise, and play?

What's your take? Is there ever a place for punishment in dog training, or should we fully embrace the power of positivity? 🐶✨

While every dog is different and every household has different goals, giving your dog the best life should always be one of your priorities.

To do this we need a rough guide on how much time we should be spending with them, and what we should be doing with that time.

So how can you provide your dog with the best?

I like to break my time down to 10 / 20 / 30 / 40 minute blocks.

💫 10 minutes of training per day
Structured training session, with rewards. This session should be used to reinforce important skills and to learn new ones. You can also split this session up over the day if that suits your lifestyle. eg; 2 minutes in the morning, 3 minutes at lunch etc.

💫 20 minutes of enrichment per day
Enrichment can look like changing up your feeding routine, adding in toys and challenges, it can also look like a sniffari in a new place, scent work, games for your specific breed.

💫 30 minutes of cuddle time per day
This is your time to build a great bond. One on one time spent doing something that you both love. There should be no expectations, and try to keep it phone free, so you can focus solely on them. Cuddles on the couch, grooming, wrestling, playing chasey are some great ideas.

💫 40 minutes of exercise per day
Getting outside for some fresh air, sunshine and stretching those legs is so important. Whether it's a walk, sniffari, swim or game of chase, exercise should be included into your every day routine. Don't forget to add in some structure and training to these sessions.

You know what's great about this though?
You can mix and match.
If you want to spend more time training, and less time exercising today, then do that! It's meant to be flexible so that you can both get the most out of life together.

Tell me in the comments what's something you and your dog love doing together 🩷

Foods that can be harmful to dogs that are often around during easter 🐰

🍫 Chocolate: Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is. Easter chocolates such as chocolate bunnies, eggs, and candies pose a significant risk if consumed by dogs.

🍭 Xylitol: This artificial sweetener is often found in sugar-free candies, gums, and baked goods. Xylitol can cause a rapid release of insulin in dogs, leading to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, and liver failure.

🍇 Grapes and raisins: While not typically associated with Easter, some fruitcakes and desserts may contain grapes or raisins. These can cause kidney failure in dogs, even in small amounts.

🥜 Macadamia nuts: Macadamia nuts are commonly found in baked goods and candies. They can cause weakness, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia in dogs.

🍷 Alcohol: Some desserts or treats may contain alcohol, which is toxic to dogs and can lead to intoxication, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, coma, and even death.

🧅 Onions and garlic: These ingredients are often present in savory dishes and can cause damage to a dog's red blood cells, leading to anemia.

🦴 Bones: While bones are often given to dogs as treats, cooked bones, especially those from poultry, can splinter and cause choking, blockages, or perforations of the digestive tract.

If you're concerned your dog may have eaten any of these, call your Vet immediately.

The teenage stage SUCKS!

And you are not alone.

It's weird how we go through the puppy blues and puppy challenges and believe that once we get through that stage we'll have this perfectly trained dog, who will fit perfectly into our lives.

And what really happens is we put in all this work with them while they are a puppy, only for them to hit teenage age and they behave like we've never done a days work training them.

They start to ignore you, don't return when you call them, jump and pull on lead, sometimes we start seeing the start of reactive behaviour and they are just chaotic.

But I want you to know that you haven't failed.
This stage is completely normal.
And we all go through it.
Your dog isn't a "bad" dog.
They are a normal teenage dog, presenting normal teenage behaviour.

But it doesn't have to be quite that hard. Understanding your teen dogs behaviour, what training to do to suit their current developing brain, how to set up day to day management to successfully get through this time, will all help you to enjoy this stage.

If that sounds like what you need, then my Teen Dog Etiquette course is the perfect place for you and your dog.
DM me for when our next course begins and let me help you through this challenging stage. xx
