Last week we had the lovely Ashleigh join us for a week-long work experience placement as a year 10 student, so we decided to ask her a few questions…

Why did you choose to do your work experience at myvet?
The vet industry really interests me so I thought it would be fun if I could experience what a vet does for a week.

What is your favourite dog breed?
Golden Retriever. 🐶

What was the most interesting thing you saw?
The most interesting thing I saw was the process of desexing a cat or dog. I loved meeting the kittens. 🐱

What was something you learnt?
I learnt heaps of terminology along with what to do in certain situations.

PS how sweet is Augie the Chinese Crested 😍

It’s time to introduce our clinic pet….. Sky the budgie!! 🐦

What is your favourite toy?
The mirror- I like to look at myself!

What is your favourite role in the vet clinic?
I like to increase my chirping volume as soon as the phone is answered so all the clients can hear me! 🎵🎶

What is your favourite food?
Seed, seed and more seed- I refuse the “better” food I get offered.

Favourite time of year?
When the sun is out so I can be outside watching everyone over at

The weather in Bendigo is predicted to hit 40 degrees on Monday, so now is the time to be prepared to keep your pets cool! ☀️

Pictured is Nurse Nicole with her two dogs Sasha and Lola.

Heatstroke is a serious and life threatening
condition. When our pets aren’t able to cool themselves through panting, hyperthermia can occur. Hyperthermia is when the body’s core temperature increases above its normal range.

Signs of Heat Stroke
🔥 heavy panting, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst
🔥 bright red tongue and mucous membranes which turn grey as shock sets in
🔥 thick saliva, drooling, vomiting, and/or diarrhoea
🔥 unsteadiness and staggering
🔥lethargy

Dogs who are more at risk:
⁃ Flat faced breeds; pugs, frenchies, bulldogs
⁃ Long haired breeds; border collies, lhasa apso
⁃ Young and Senior Dogs; puppies and dogs over 7 years old

Make sure your pets have shade and shelter with fresh, clean and cool drinking water. Adjust the timing of walks to avoid the hottest part of the day. Use cooling mats or make frozen treats for your pets! Provide a shell pool if your dog’s a fan of water! 💦

It’s important your feathered friends have lots of shade and your chickens may even like to keep cool with a sprinkler! 🐔

Favourite nurse role and why?
Consult! I love the business of consults and making everyone comfortable. I do love dipping my toes into hospital too! 🐾

Favourite dog or cat breed?
So many to choose but it would have to be Murray River Retrievers, Chocolate Labradors and GSPs. 🐶

Fun fact about yourself?
I have judged alpacas in competitions. I am mediocre at drawing and crochet. 🖌

Something on your bucket list?
To travel and work with big cats and monkeys. 🐵🐒🐱

Last Thursday Dr Susan attended an evening with Samantha Wills at to celebrate the launch of Samantha’s first children's book hosted by OAK Magazine. Dr Susan participated in a Q&A panel and here are some of our favourite quotes from Dr Susan:

"Half of vets leave the industry within five years of graduating. They’re brilliant, hardworking people, but we’re losing them because they can’t find satisfaction."

"We shifted to a four-day week, stopped doing weekends, and prioritised our team’s wellbeing. It’s about recognising what’s sustainable for staff and the business."

"Our main mission is to care for your pet like it’s our own. If we can’t do that, then something’s wrong."

Here’s what you need to watch for:

Symptoms:
- Itchiness and frequent scratching
- Head shaking
- Redness in the ear canal
- Excessive wax buildup
- Unpleasant odor

Prevention Tips:
✔️ Keep ears dry after swimming or baths.
✔️ Routine check-ups to catch problems early.

If your pup shows any of these symptoms, book in for a consult with us. Early care = happy, healthy ears! ❤️🐾

🌾 Grass Seeds: A Hidden Danger for Pets! 🌾
Did you know grass seeds can cause serious issues for your furry friends? 🐶🐾 These tiny troublemakers might seem harmless but can embed themselves in your pet’s skin, ears, paws, or even eyes.
Signs to Watch For:
🔍 Limping or licking paws excessively
🔍 Redness, swelling, or discharge in the ears, eyes, or skin
🔍 Sudden head shaking
Why Are They Dangerous?
Grass seeds can migrate through tissue, leading to infections or abscesses. In severe cases, they might even require surgery to remove!
Prevention Tips:
✔️ Keep your pet’s coat trimmed, especially around their paws, ears, and belly.
✔️ Check your pet after walks, particularly if you’ve been in grassy areas.
✔️ Remove visible seeds immediately to prevent them from burrowing.
If your pet shows any of these signs, contact us promptly to avoid complications. Let’s keep our furry companions safe and comfortable! 🐾❤️
Watch as Dr Courtney removes a grass seed from a dogs ear!
