The Bendigo Animal Relief Centre, affectionately called ‘BARC,’ provides feed, shelter and medical treatment to animals who have become lost, seized or surrendered.

BARC and the City of Greater Bendigo are committed to continuing to provide discount cat des*xing opportunities for our community.
While we do have several programs available, we are currently seeking residents from our FIVE TARGET SUBURBS where we have identified that unowned cat populations are the greatest.
If you ....
🏠Live in Kangaroo Flat, Golden Square, Heathcote, California Gully or Eaglehawk.
🐈Have rescued an unowned cat from the street, or are feeding a cat from the neighborhood.
🪪Have a concession card and/or a support worker.
Then you may be able to get $20 cat des*xing, microchipping and registration!

Some kittens are easier to photograph than others 😅😅
Usually kittens don't feature on our page as they often get adopted very quickly. Take Winston, featured right....He was made available for adoption at 2.10pm today, and was adopted by 3.30!

We are looking for a Foster Carer for sweet, shy Siracha, a 1yo Labrador mix 🧡
Don't say you hear it from us, but Siracha is a bit of a scaredy-cat and we think she would benefit from a foster home where she can build up her confidence.
Siracha's best friend is a cat who was surrendered to the shelter with her, and while we are keen to get Siracha into any foster home which may suit, one with cats may be beneficial to her - or even better, one who has space to foster her feline BFF as well!🐈🐈🐈
Foster Carers for BARC must reside in the Bendigo Council area, and foster-to-adopt is certainly an option!

What can we say about Mia....this sweet lady who has just qualified for her seniors card is full of that traditional English Staffy Terrier love for her people, and we just can't believe she hasn't been adopted yet!
Mia is house trained and likes to sleep inside. She would do well in a home with or without kids, as long as there are plenty of belly rubs on offer, and opportunities to play. Mia is friendly with other dogs and appreciates their occasional company.
Mia's $100 adoption fee includes her vaccination, microchipping, flea and worm treatment, Petcademy training support, and for Bendigo residents, includes Council registration up until 2026!

Its going to be HOT again today! 🌞🌞
If you are seeking information on the best way to mange your dog in the heat, the internet can hold as many opinions as there are people! So here are some practical tips supported by science, which are relevant to our weather here in Bendigo!
🐕🚶♂️Walk your dog in the morning, ideally not in the evenings on very hot days. While the concrete may cool in the evenings, the air temperature is still often too hot.
❄Dogs may love ice cubes to play with, but do not rely on ice in their drinking water as a method to cool them down. Water must be clean and fresh to encourage pets to drink.
🐩Shaving your long haired dog WILL help them stay cool, their long coat does NOT protect them from the heat.
🐶Short nosed breeds are twice as likely to suffer heat stroke, and may suffer from heat induced stress in temperatures as mild as 25 degrees.
☀️If your pet is showing signs of heat stroke, you MUST contact your emergency veterinarian immediately. Do not wait to see if the symptoms persist. Cool your dog by wetting them all over (except their head) with cold running water or by submerging them and continue to get veterinary help.
Central Veterinary Emergency is provides after hours emergency care to Bendigo's pets, contact them on 0413 898 331 should your pet be showing signs of heat stroke.

Southpaw just received a delivery from the South Pole!
We have been blowen away at the generosity of our community this year, with lots of people dropping of goodies for the dogs and cats who are spending their Christmas in the shelter.
