Things your riding instructor wants you to know:
1. This sport is hard. You don't get to bypass the hard…..every good rider has gone through it. You make progress, then you don't, and then you make progress again. Your riding instructor can coach you through it, but they cannot make it easy.

2. You're going to ride horses you don't want to ride. If you're teachable, you will learn from every horse you ride. Each horse in the barn can teach you if you let them. IF YOU LET THEM. Which leads me to…

3. You MUST be teachable to succeed in this sport. You must be teachable to succeed at anything, but that is another conversation. Being teachable often means going back to basics time and time and time again. If you find basics boring, then your not looking at them as an opportunity to learn. Which brings me to…..

4. This sport is a COMMITMENT. Read that, then read it again. Every sport is a commitment, but in this sport your teammate weighs 1200 lbs and speaks a different language. Good riders don't get good by riding every once in awhile….they improve because they make riding a priority and give themsevles opportunity to practice.

5. EVERY RIDE IS AN OPPORTUNITY. Even the walk ones. Even the hard ones. Every. Single. Ride. Remember when you just wished someone would lead you around on a horse? Find the happiness in just being able to RIDE. If you make every ride about what your AREN'T doing, you take the fun out of the experience for yourself, your horse, and your instructor. Just enjoy the process. Which brings me to...

6. Riding should be fun. It is work. and work isn't always fun.....but if you (or your rider) are consistently choosing other activities or find yourself not looking forward to lessons, it's time to take a break. The horses already know you don't want to be here, and you set yourself up for failure if you are already dreading the lesson before you get here.

7. You'll learn more about horses from the ground than you ever will while riding. That's why ground lessons are important, too. If you're skipping ground lessons (or the part of your lesson that takes place on the ground), you're missing out on the most important parts of the lesson. You spend far more time on the ground with horses than you do in the saddle.

8. Ask questions and communicate. If you're wondering why your coach is having you ride a particular horse or do an exercise, ask them. Then listen to their answer and refer to #3 above.

9. We are human beings. We make decisions (some of them life and death ones) every day. We balance learning for students with workloads for horses and carry the bulk of this business on our shoulders. A little courtesy goes a long way.

Of all the sports your child will try through their school years, riding is one of 3 that they may continue regularly as adults (golf and skiing are the others). People who coach riding spend the better part of their free time and much of their disposable income trying to improve their own riding and caring for the horses who help teach your child. They love this sport and teaching others…..but they all have their limits. Not all good riders are good coaches, but all good coaches will tell you that the process to get good is not an easy one.

Hector Gypsy Cob Gelding

Has come for 2wks of boot camp education.

He had a few conversations with Ed this morning on how he thought the poles should be done and the gate was rather attractive, but all in all great session for Hector today.

With lots of yawning and processing at the end of it all.

As Horse Educators we have all sorts of horses sent to us, at all sorts of levels of handling or No handling at all but this video was worth a share as - He states some fare points that owners need to be aware of.

All on all a fabulous weekend at WATPA.

Ed rode our Purebred Andalusian mare Bella today at WATPA RSNCA State Championships, she did us proud for her first time ranchsorting with us and she took it in her stride.

She got Ed 2 runs in the finals and then ended up placing 2nd on Mighty in the finals overall.

1st comp back after 18mths off - we are so happy to see their is a real increase in numbers at these events which is so great for the Sport.

It's been a fabulous weekend catching up with mates and having so much fun ☺️ 💕.

We very interested in getting back to competition again in 2025 and plan on holding alot of cattle training days at BCHT over summer and autumn.

And we look forward to meeting all the new people that we see are now out competing in WA ranchsorting.

;)

Thanks to Eds partners throughout the weekend the assisted him in Placing well, WATPA for putting on a fabulous Event and RSNCA for all the sponsorship and support.

HAPPY RIDING EVERYONE ;)

EXPECTATIONS ON A HORSE TRAINER

We are expected to train the horse for the least amount of funds possible and the least amount of time.

To train the horse to be what each individual owner wants no matter the breed or type of horse.

To be trained to every different riders level no matter the horse.

To train horses from Unhandled to riding in 4-6wks.

To work magic and turn riders that can not ride into riders over night, so they can ride the horses we have trained for them.

To assist the horse to develop full fitness from spring paddock fatty into well muscled fit for purpose in 4-8wks.

I'm here to tell you that alot of what is expected of us is achieved at a push for each owner.

And not always achieved due to budget or reasons on the Owners behalf and our Expectations not matching theirs.

Here is why!!

Our expectation on the Owners

Please be willing to work on your abilities too, if you haven't been honest with yourself on your abilities as the owner and future rider of the horse this could go badly for you and your horse.

Be honest with your trainer on your ability from the start so they can quote accordingly.

If the trainer wants you to ride your horse while in their care multiple times - Do it as it is so the trainer can be confident in you taking the horse on after the training.

IF YOU DO NOT YOU WILL COME UNSTUCK - As it's just as important for the trainer to have the Expectation that the rider / Owner is able to take on the horse they are training after its training, as it is for the owner to have the expectation of the trainer to achieve the training.

The owner needs to be capable of taking on the Young freshly trained horse and be willing to work on themselves, learn new things so they can be at there best for there newly trained mount.

I invite potential clients to take the time to be Self analytical of their abilities ASK yourself these 3 question's :

Can I ride a green horse confidently?

Can I ride a spook, buck, bolt or any sudden behaviour or possible reaction a green horse could have in any future situation I may introduce them too?

Can I be the one to guide a young horse through worry or an uneasy situation and stay calm?

If YES is your honest answer to all these questions..... send a horse to a trainer and be prepared to do the work with the horse as taking them home means the work now handballs to you to continue it on.

If your Answer is NO then may I suggest you don't send the horse to a trainer without being prepared to spend more $$$$$ and more time working on you aswell as the horse before this pretty picture comes together for you both.

These are real Expectations of the industry it's trainers and it's owners.

Every Real horse person knows it takes Years to train great horses - Never forget that.

It's NOT EVER your trainers fault if your not the rider for your horse or if you haven't been true to your abilities from the start.

Your horse's great experience starts and ends with you, the trainer is just part of the process along the root to educated, well trained and well seasoned horse.

Do your horse the justice and look at what you also need to do to help them get the most out of their training experience.
