Myth Buster: Female dogs should have one litter of puppies before they get speyed. 🐶❌

This is a common misconception, but it is not supported by veterinary science. In fact, speying a female dog before her first heat cycle has several significant health benefits. Here are the facts:

Health Benefits: Speying a female dog before her first heat cycle can greatly reduce the risk of mammary (breast) cancer, one of the most common cancers in female dogs. It also prevents uterine infections (pyometra), which can be life-threatening and often require emergency surgery.

Behavioral Benefits: Speying can help reduce unwanted behaviors associated with the heat cycle, such as marking, aggression, and the attraction of male dogs. It also eliminates the stress and inconvenience of managing a dog in heat. 🐾😌

Population Control: By speying your dog, you contribute to controlling the pet population, reducing the number of unwanted puppies that may end up in shelters or rescues. 🏠🐕

No Negative Impact on Development: There is no evidence to suggest that having a litter of puppies provides any health or behavioral benefits to the dog. In fact, pregnancy and childbirth can carry significant risks, especially if complications arise.

Spaying is a responsible choice for pet owners, promoting the well-being of their dogs and helping to address broader animal welfare issues. Another incredible donation from Animal Rescue Cooperative 🥰 We honestly wouldn’t be able to do what we do without the help of ARC. As most of you know, the rescue world right now is very tough to say the least. Donations like this give us that spark back and remind us why we love this industry 💚🐾

Cat friendly? Yes, lives with a cat.

Dog friendly? Yes, his best friend is a Maltese, they hang around in the backyard together all day.

Peyton passed away in our shelter last night.

He came to us just yesterday, a weary soul found in a barn. Fourteen years old, underweight, half an ear missing, and struggling to breathe. His microchip, dating back to 2009, was a silent witness to a life that once was – a life that had somewhere turned bleak and lonely.

In his final hours, Peyton experienced moments of love and care that had been missing for so long. We cleaned his crusted nose, combed out his matts, and he purred, basking in the affection he so deserved. He clung to our warmth, his body going limp with trust and perhaps, relief.

This morning, we found him gone, his struggle quietly ended in the comfort of a soft blanket and a full belly. His departure is a profound reminder of the countless animals who face similar fates, animals whose stories go untold, whose lives end without a whisper.

Peyton's story is a glimpse into the harsh realities faced by many animals. It's a testament to the resilience and enduring hope they possess, even in the face of neglect and abandonment. It underscores the vital role shelters play – not just as a place of refuge, but as a final sanctuary where love and care are given, even if just for a moment.

As we mourn Peyton, let's remember the countless others like him. Each day, shelters across the country are filled with animals waiting for a second chance, for a family, for a home. They wait for someone to notice them, to care, to extend a hand of kindness.

Peyton's story is not just about loss; it's about awareness, compassion, and the bitter-sweet role shelters play in the lives of animals. In sharing his story, we hope to shed light on the unseen struggles and to inspire a community of care and support for these innocent lives.

Do you think you could give a forever home to this beautiful young lad?

This is Tapioca (or Tap for short), he has a lot of personality and a crow to match. His owners love him very much but sadly they have neighbours who are probably not keen on Tap being an alarm clock.

He is a 4 month old Australop cross Rhode Island red so you know he will be big and his colours are just beautiful!
Because he has no tail it’s possible he has a genetic defect, which doesn’t affect his way of life but the gene might be passed on. Therefore he should be considered more of a pet than breeding stock.

It would be great if Tap could be rehomed ideally on a hobby farm that will give him the kingdom he deserves and a happy life. If you think Tap might be a good suit for you please send us a message and we can pass you onto his owners.

Today we got the best news possible!! Our little Gantu has made a miraculous recovery 🥰 This little guy was one of the pups found in a basket on the side of the road last year. He was unfortunately diagnosed with a severe heart murmur at 4 weeks old and we weren’t seeing any improvement. He would struggle to get up, was slower than his siblings and could never keep up. Dr Dick at Highlands Veterinary Hospital went above and beyond to help Gantu. He had tests and scans done so we could have a better understanding of his condition. Unfortunately those scans showed our worst fears. He was not improving and even with surgery at a Sydney specialist the chances of him recovering were 50/50. Due to the severity of his condition and how difficult it was making his life we had to discuss what the best course of action was. We decided to further monitor him over the past few months and have checked in with Dick throughout. We have slowly seen an improvement but weren’t sure if we were just seeing what we wanted to see. Today we went in for a checkup expecting to be told the worst but instead he has completely healed himself! His heart murmur is gone!! Gone!! We are so incredibly happy for Gantu and are forever grateful for Dr Dick and the team at Highlands Vet. Also a massive shoutout to Claire our puppy foster who held him and all the pups for months until they found their forever homes. Claire hand-fed each puppy and raised them into the most beautiful, respectful pups. We are so lucky to have you Claire 🫶

Gantu is officially available for adoption!! He is 5 months old and the sweetest, bestest boy ever. If you love cuddles and kisses then Gantu is the boy for you. He’s great with dogs and kids. He’s even met some cats and is awesome around them! This boy is so very special and we can’t wait for him to find his forever family 💚

How do we tell Nani that today the 10th family pulled out of meeting her?
Yep you read that right! 10 families over the last few weeks have applied for this beautiful girl, were interviewed and then pulled out before meeting her. One family even stood her up for the meet and greet! Not one of their reasons had to do with Nani, most found another dog overnight 🤦‍♀️
We are honestly just shocked that a puppy as perfect and sweet as Nani hasn’t been snapped up!

5 months old, dog friendly, kid friendly, toilet trained, the sweetest, friendliest girl ever. Breed is unknown as her and her siblings were found in a basket at 4 weeks old.

Littlefoot is the definition of a gentle giant. He has the biggest head we have ever seen on a dog 😂 This gorgeous dude bonds quickly with people and will be the most loyal and loving companion. He is a massive couch potato and thrives on hugs and praise. He loves other dogs and would love a home with an existing doggo or two but isn’t fazed if he doesn't have to share your love. He was one of our previous pound rescues and is doing amazing in his foster home with male and female dogs!

Least favourite things:
At times he doesn’t like people entering his space without warning. Sometimes he can be great and confident but at times he will need proper introductions to strangers.

I would be suited to a home with:
This guy is pretty flexible about where he would like to live. He would love a whole family but would also love a single person or couple. Because he loves so strongly at times he doesn’t like being left alone, having a doggy friend makes any of that anxiety go away!

Kid friendly? Yes but he’s a big dude so preferably kids that are dog savvy.

Our gorgeous puppies are ready for their forever homes 🐶🐾

Breed - Unknown our guess is possibly medium/ large sized when fully grown.

These beautiful babies were found in a basket on the side of the road when they were about 4 weeks old. They were brought into the already overcrowded pound and wouldn’t have made it to the end of the day. We quickly got them into care with our INCREDIBLE puppy foster carer and now they are beyond thriving!!

All pups are dog friendly, kid friendly and very social. They are active little ones that will require a fair amount of exercise once fully grown. Secure fencing is a must. They are very affectionate but also have a healthy amount of independence and confidence. They really are the perfect babies 🥰

The sweetest, most beautiful soul ever is ready for her forever home 🌿💚

Age - 3

Breed - Rottweiler x

We met this beautiful girl at the pound and HAD to save her and bring her into care. Fern has Hip Dysplasia (early stages) but that doesn’t dampen her spirits! She is in no physical pain and our vet plan consists of weight management and some meds/ an injection IF pain becomes present. She went home with one of our long term foster carers, Stef and has been living the life of luxury with her two foster brothers ever since.

Fern is a gentle girl who loves sleeping and cuddling. She LOVES her fur siblings and loves every person she meets. She’s easy going, funny and a pleasure to have around.

Favourite things: She loves her toys, going for a nice walk outside, she loves cuddles, sniffing and playing with other dogs and seems she doesn’t mind kids too. But above all she loves all things water, eating it, swimming in it, being one with it 😂
Least favourite things: She doesn't like loud noises, this includes loud or too active dogs, she doesn't like when other dogs are around while she eats either.

I would be suited to a home with: Preferably a calmer household. Fern would love some doggy siblings but is also quite happy to chill on her own. She wouldn’t mind some kids too, as long as they aren’t crazy! She would fit into most households, she’s easy, she’s sweet, she’s kind, you really couldn’t ask for a better dog!

Toilet trained? Yes very! She was known to not go to the toilet in her kennel at the pound, she would hold all day until she got out on the grass.

Food aggressive? At times she can be protective (classic pound dog!) so best to feed her seperate
Toy aggressive? No
