Baby Alba is progressing well. She has commenced reducing her diet to get ready for fledging. I am expecting her to take her first flight any day now. Alba does not display much fear for a parrot her age. She stands her ground with the rest of the flock and moves around alot. Her favourite place is on the Couch looking out the window. Alba is now communicating her needs to me and even bitten a few times when she is not happy. She will often sit on my shoulder and chatter to me. I am really happy with her progress.

QUALITY CAGES
Are you looking for a quality bird cage that won't rust. One that contains some of the mess and looks great? I have been searching for myself for a long time and have found cages overseas at a reasonable price. All shapes and sizes. I am considering importing to sell as I cannot locate anywhere in Australia that makes these cages for less than$3000. I can get them $500 to $1000 depending on size. Let me know if this is something you would be interested in. I am in the process of sourcing the best possible price.

This is my 6 year old greencheek conure Sunny. She has a partner and three older babies but still loves her time with me. She loves to snuggle and get in my clothes. She is the only one of my parrots that listen when I have a firm voice and will stop doing what I ask. The rest at me then go back to doing what i told them not to. One night I didn't put her away and found her the next morning sleeping under my doona next to my leg so she is now always caged at night. She just couldn't find the right spot in the pics below.lol

It's now been months since Alfie joined my flock and what an amazing bird he is. He now almost completely trusts me. He flies from room to room whenever I move around. He is such a sweetheart. He is now saying multiple words and participating in simple games he enjoys and picking up on some commands. He is definitely not a bird for a beginner. He requires very firm boundaries as he is extremely playful and does not realise the strength of his own beak which has bruised me many times. It's hard for me not to wrestle play with him as he loves it so much! He says hello on command by lifting his claw up. You will see him do this in the video. Sometimes he just walks up and lifts his claw to tell me he wants a treat. So cute.

As for the rest of my flock the ringnecks are coming into season so mine will be moved into their breeding aviaries shortly. I will post some pics then but am very excited about my breeding pairs this year. Although I love the cleartails they cannot quite compete with the opaline cleartails so my breeding program will include the combined mutations. Mutations are available on the internet if your not sure what they look like. As I love the emerald and violet colours these will be the first colours to come through.
I should have them ready for sale in the handrearing market in the next couple of years. I am taking a break from rearing this year as it is difficult to find enough good homes with the cost of living increasing so dramatically but may do some to order. I will post pictures of the babies as they come through. I'm always excited each breeding season to see what babies I get.

I havnt been great with keeping up posts in the group so while awaiting next breeding season I thought I would track the progress of my new Amazon Alfie who joined my flock about 6 weeks ago. He is 6 months old and is settling in well to his new home with me. I am spending alot of time with him training to be a therapy parrot. Amazon's are known for their intelligence and talking/ singing ability. Alfie is already mimicking laughing and says hello. He is always practising his talking but is still quite jumbled😀 These are some baby pics of him and a current photo. He is always on the move and wanting to wrestle with my hands. He loves his neck scratches when I can keep him still long enough.

Amazon Parrot meets Chihuahua!
My Chihuahuas have spent years living with Parrots and have never harmed them. There was a growl but no biting.

This is my boy and girl Toby and Lucy snuggling at night. Toby resembles the devil at the moment with his hormones racing but they they do this. I had Toby for about a year before handrearing Lucy as a friend for him.

I have been posting recently thinking I was posting in the group🤔 I have quite a few baby ringnecks for the season and after 5 years my pet conure decided to lay. She has been letting me interact with her babies so they should be tame by the time they are ready for their new homes. I have spent alot of time with them and will be sad to see them go. Both parents are greencheeks but looks like Dad is split. I'm hoping for a baby pineapple.

First lot of babies now going to there new homes. It is so easy to get attached to them and sad to see them go. I wish I could keep them all but happy they all have wonderful homes to go to.
The last lot of babies for the season are now 4 weeks old with only one boy left to find a home. The colours are stunning. I only removed two from each parents so the older of the siblings are still yet to fledge.

This seasons babies so far. It has been a difficult season so far and I have not updated as much as I would have liked. There are now more babies in the nest ready for rearing. Most already have forever homes to go to and I couldn't be happier with the families my chick's are going to. Can't wait to see the s*x and colours of the younger babies.

After some research into handrearing and the effects on the parents and the chick's I have decided to start doing things a bit differently. Some countries have banned handrearing due to the short and long term potential health and behavioural affects on the chicks.
The new plan is to alter my aviary set up so that I can handle the chick's without taking them from the parents. In doing so the babies continue to get the antibodies they need from the parents to avoid infections and the chick is able to develop its identity as a bird but still have the capacity to bond with humans. To begin this process the parents require handrearing so they are a tame bird to be able to handle the chick and not create fear of humans in them. This will take a few years of planning but I believe the benefits will be worth effort.

There are very little standards in Australia for the keeping of and rearing of parrots. If my research works I am hoping to set a standard of care within my aviaries that will benefit the parrot and permanent owners and do what is right for the wellbeing of my adult breeding birds.

I am planning on keeping some chick's from this season to hopefully commence trials next season.

I am interested in hearing from anyone who has any thoughts on this or ideas on this, particularly if you have done something similar and tracked the difference this has made for the chick's and their behaviour and relationship with their new owners. Any issues you may have encountered and how this was managed.

The babies are now developing their feathers. Three beautiful emeralds that are likely females but will not know for certain until I DNA in about one weeks time. I have 5 other babies with another pair that I will be handrearing next week for pets. There were originally 6 but lost the smallest about a week ago. I will post photos of them next week. They will be cobalt and emerald cleartails. I will post a pic of how they will look once mature. They are stunning.

The chick's are growing quickly and have just started to open their eyes. The larger two now have their leg bands on and you can see their colour starting to form. They will be either emerald or violet but difficult to tell which at this stage. They are quite active and stand up when I put my hand in the box. They are certainly much cuter now too! They usually develop fluff on their rump before their feathers. The colour of the fluff determines which chick's will be opaline. The fluff is either white or grey. As the father is a split opaline, any opalines in the clutch will be female. I have another six chick's and more eggs being laid so is looking to be a great season.

7 total chick's hatched and expecting two more in the next few days. The parents are caring for them well and they are growing and getting stronger.

This is Toby and Lucy. Toby's hormones are racing a little more than expected when I recorded this and seems Lucy wasn't keen on the idea at that time either. Toby is 5 years and Lucy 4 years. I purchased Toby as a weaned chick and handreared Lucy myself. They are my companions which is why they are not shy trying to mate on me. Lol

A third egg has now hatched and all three babies are healthy and being well cared for by their mother. It's unlikely the remaining two eggs will hatch but will remain with the mother for a bit longer. They are now checked everyday to ensure they are being fed and kept warm. I will provide a further update shortly as their growth can be quite rapid at this age. My second pair have 6 eggs and have also commenced hatching while other pairs have not yet commenced. In a few weeks I will be able to determine their s*x and colour. The chick's will then be available for viewing and ordering. It's amazing how these hairless chick's can grow into such beautiful parrots.
