🐾 The final chapter of our little cat's story is here! After a week, his foot was healing beautifully, and we were eagerly awaiting the histopathology report. We’re thrilled to share that the results showed no evidence of cancer. Instead, the mass was identified as a large piece of granulation tissue.

Granulation tissue is a type of new tissue that forms during the healing process. It’s rich in blood vessels and helps to close and repair wounds. In this case, we suspect he had a cut or injury on his foot that wasn’t healing properly, prompting his body to produce this mass in an attempt to heal itself.

The good news is that the surgery has been curative, and no further treatment is needed. We’re so happy for this little cat and his family!

🐾 For those of you following the journey of our little cat with the mass on his foot, here's an update on the cytology results. The report showed a high number of neutrophils—these white blood cells are crucial for fighting infections and inflammation. While no obvious cancer cells were found, there were some cells with mild changes that could potentially indicate early cancer.

Vets often encounter such ambiguous results, making it challenging to determine the next steps. After careful discussion with the owner, we decided that the best approach was to remove the mass and reconstruct the foot pad. We’re pleased to report that the procedure went exceptionally well, and his foot is looking great!

Please note that the following photos include images of the surgical procedure.

The final step now is waiting for the pathologist’s report, which will examine the entire tissue sample to confirm whether cancer is present. This process typically takes up to a week.

Stay tuned for our final update once the results are in!

🐾 For those of you who followed our journey with a cat who had a mass on his foot, we wanted to share the decisions we made and why. This case was a challenging one, and we had to carefully consider the financial implications of each potential investigation and treatment.

Initially, we thought about performing a surgical biopsy, which would have provided the most accurate diagnosis. However, this option would have required anaesthesia, minor surgery, and the cost of a pathology review—factors we had to weigh carefully.

Another approach we considered was amputation, especially given our concerns about the mass potentially being cancerous. We had to think about whether removing the leg and the likely tumor would be best for the cat's overall well-being. Could he adapt to life with three legs? Or, considering his fearful nature and the severity of his condition, would euthanasia have been the kinder option?

Ultimately, we decided to perform a fine needle aspirate (FNA), a less invasive and more cost-effective procedure. An FNA involves using a small needle to extract cells from the mass for examination. It’s a quick procedure that provided us with valuable information to guide our next steps.

In our next post, we’ll share the cytology results & what we did next!

🐾 A recent case at Rockdale Vet Hospital reminded us how unpredictable veterinary care can be. We saw a cat who, though dearly loved, was born outside and has always been terrified of people. Despite his good quality of life and being desexed, he’s never been easy to handle. Recently, he started limping, and after some effort, his owners managed to bring him in.

Once sedated using our Fear Free techniques to minimize stress, we discovered a large mass on his main foot pad—something none of us were expecting. This raised serious concerns, including the possibility of cancer, and the mass didn’t look easily removable. We now face some difficult decisions.

What’s the best course of action? What are our options? We’ll be sharing an update in a few days as we work through this challenging case.

🐉🌟 Exciting Visitor Alert! 🌟🐉

Today at Rockdale Vet Hospital, we had the pleasure of hosting an extraordinary guest - a magnificent bearded dragon! 🦎✨

Did you know?

🌞 **Temperature Regulation:** Bearded dragons are experts in thermoregulation. They bask in the sun to warm up and can often be seen flattening their bodies to absorb more heat.

🍃 **Omnivorous Diet:** These fascinating reptiles enjoy a varied diet, munching on everything from insects to leafy greens. Their diet changes as they grow, with juveniles eating more protein-rich insects and adults consuming more plant matter.

🌈 **Color Communication:** Bearded dragons use their vibrant colors to communicate. Their beard can turn black when they're stressed, excited, or feeling territorial.

🦎 **Friendly Nature:** Known for their docile temperament, bearded dragons make wonderful pets. They enjoy human interaction and can even recognize their owners!

We were thrilled to meet this scaly superstar.🐾💚

🐾 Meet Ringnut, the Bestest Boy! 🐾

Ringnut recently visited us at Rockdale Vet Hospital on Forest Road with an incredibly sore toe. It was so painful that we initially thought he might have broken it. To help him feel more comfortable, we gave him a gentle sedation so he could sleep while we carefully clipped and cleaned his sore toe.

An X-ray gave Ringnut the all clear on any fractures, leading us to suspect a horrible nail bed infection as the culprit. With a course of antibiotics and painkillers, Ringnut should be feeling much better very soon. He was incredibly brave and such a great patient throughout the whole process!

At Rockdale Vet Hospital, we're committed to making every visit as stress-free and comfortable as possible, which is why we're proud to be Fear Free accredited. Our team is here to provide the best care for your furry friends, no matter what they're facing.

Wishing Ringnut a speedy recovery and sending lots of love his way! 🐾❤️

🐾 Meet Jasper, the Bravest Dog! 🐾

Jasper recently had a scary adventure when he accidentally ate a tasty snack with a hidden danger—a fishing hook! Fishing hooks can be devastating for dogs, especially if they damage the oesophagus or other internal organs.

Luckily, Jasper’s bravery and our skilled team at Rockdale Vet Hospital on Forest Road ensured a happy ending. We were able to retrieve the hook without causing major damage, and Jasper made a full and rapid recovery. He’s now back to his playful self.

This incident is a crucial reminder to fish responsibly and always keep an eye on your pets around fishing areas.

At Rockdale Vet Hospital, we are Fear Free accredited, ensuring that every pet’s visit is as stress-free and comfortable as possible. Our dedicated team is always here to provide top-notch care for your beloved pets.

🐾🦷 Dental Health Alert for Your Furry Friends! 🦷🐾

Hey pet parents! It's time to give your furry pals' dental health the attention it deserves. Just like us, our beloved cats and dogs need proper dental care to maintain those pearly whites and overall well-being. Here are some tips to keep those toothy grins sparkling:

**Regular Brushing**: Yes, you read that right! Just like humans, pets benefit greatly from regular brushing. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste specifically designed for pets, and aim to brush their teeth at least a few times a week. Start slow and be patient, allowing your pet to get used to the sensation.

**Chew Toys and Dental Treats**: Providing your pet with chew toys designed to promote dental health can help reduce plaque and tartar buildup. Look for toys and treats approved by veterinary dentists, which are often designed to encourage chewing and scrubbing action on their teeth.

**Routine Veterinary Check-ups**: Make dental health a part of your pet's regular veterinary visits. Your vet can perform dental exams and cleanings as needed, catching any issues early before they become serious problems.

**Watch for Signs of Dental Issues**: Keep an eye out for signs of dental problems such as bad breath, swollen or bleeding gums, difficulty eating, or loose teeth. If you notice any of these issues, don't hesitate to schedule a dental check-up with your vet.

**Proper Nutrition**: A balanced diet contributes to overall health, including dental health. Feed your pet high-quality food and avoid excessive treats and table scraps, which can contribute to dental issues.

**Avoid Dental Hazards**: Be mindful of potential dental hazards such as hard toys or bones that could chip teeth, as well as toxic substances like certain plants and human foods that can harm your pet's oral health.

Remember, good dental care is essential for your pet's overall health and happiness. By incorporating these simple tips into your routine, you can help your furry friend maintain a healthy and bright smile for years to come! 🐶😺
