Leptospirosis update
Is your dog travelling to any of the following areas?
Newcastle
South Coast
Inner City- Inner West and Eastern Suburbs
Qld and NT
If so, please consider adding the leptospirosis vaccination to your dogs schedule (we do still have a few consultation times before Christmas). The current data on this deadly disease (which is also transmissible to humans) indicates that receiving any leptospirosis vaccine improves the patient outcome should it be contracted.

If you are travelling, and can't get your dog vaccinated in time, then please take some simple risk mitigation steps. Limit sources of infection by not allowing your dog to drink from or swim in any unknown or stagnant water sources. Carriers of disease are rodents and farm animals.

A friendly reminder for the festive season: Please be prepared for the upcoming fireworks season (and storms) if you have a sensitive pet.
There are various medical options for those fur babies who find these events just too stressful. Please feel free to book an appointment if you would like to know more about these for your pet.
If your pet does take these medications, please make sure you have enough to get you through to January. (We reopen Jan 6th).
One of our nurses got caught out on the weekend, with running out of medication for her storm-phobic dog! He was fine in the end- he was in a safe space and contained, and got lots of cuddles.

Hello Everyone 🐶🐱

Please note our opening hours over the Christmas/New Year period, as well as the last order date for any medications or food.

We will be open both Monday the 23rd of December and Tuesday the 24th of December, and will be closed From Wednesday 25th of December through to Sunday the 5th of January.

We will reopen on Monday the 6th of January.

Please make sure that if your pet is on any long term medications, or food ordered through us, that you have enough to last from mid-December - our last order will be placed by midday on Monday the 16th of December - through to when we reopen on the 6th of January.

We would also like to give everyone a gentle reminder to be careful where you put festive tasty treats near your pets this season, as common Christmas foods such as chocolate, macadamias, sultanas/raisins, an overabundance of the roast of choice or anything made with alcohol would make your pet ill if ingested.

We hope you all have a wonderful festive season and we will see you and your pets in the New Year. Please give all your fur-babies an extra cuddle from all of us.

With best wishes, The Blackheath Veterinary Team

Update - Rosie has been found. Thank you everyone.

LOST DOG

Hello Blackheath Community,
Please keep your eyes open for Rosie, a young Blue Heeler, who escaped an open gate this morning in the vicinity of Shipley Road. She is wearing a pink collar with studs, however she doesn't have a name tag attached at the moment.

If you find her, or have seen her recently, please contact the clinic on 4787 7388 so that we can reunite her with her very concerned owner.

Image is an example of a blue heeler taken from google, and not an actual photo of Rosie.

This week, it seems that the TICK population has come out! If your pet is not up to date with their flea and tick prevention, now would be the time to start.
Last season, there were a few cases of tick paralysis that had not been out of our local area.
This season, we have the additional environmental factors that favour ticks, including weather patterns, as well as increased bandicoot populations. Bandicoots are a carrier for ticks, so your pet doesn't even have to leave your residence to come in to contact.
To add to the confusion, the Blue Mountains also has its very own paralysis-tick-look-alike. It is almost identical in appearance to the paralysis tick, and the difference can only be seen under a microscope.
Early symptoms of tick paralysis include a change in bark/meow, vomiting/regurgitation, wobbliness in gait (often seen in the hind limbs), and changes in breathing. It is an emergency, so if you are concerned about your pet then have it looked at by a vet as soon as possible. Early intervention results in much better outcomes.
It is also worth noting that even if you find and remove the tick early, your pet may develop symptoms over the next 3 or so days and would need to be monitored closely over this time.

Tomorrow we commemorate all those who have served in military operations. We remember lost loved ones, and the terrible cost of war. Including our companions who stand beside us so faithfully.

Lest we forget.
