Dr. Kat has recently joined our Maraboon Vet Surgery Team! She started her animal career vet nursing in everything from equine hospitals to emergency animal hospitals.

Originally, from beachy Stradbroke Island, Dr. Kat has embraced the Emerald lifestyle and loving the outback grit and charm. When Dr. Kat is not at work, you will find her horse riding, camping or soaking up saltwater. ⛺🐴

☀️Feeling the heat? So are our furry friends! ☀️

As temperatures climb, it’s important to remember that our pets feel the heat even more than we do. 🔥

Here are a few key things to keep in mind this season:

🌡️ When is it too hot for dog paws?
Even on a 25°C day, the bitumen can reach over 50°C — hot enough to burn paws! Always test the ground with your hand before walking your dog.

🥵 Know the signs of heat stroke:
Drooling, excessive panting, vomiting, lethargy, red gums, or collapse are all warning signs. If you notice these, move your pet to a cool area and call us immediately.

Prevention is key:
- Provide plenty of cool water
- Keep pets in shaded or air-conditioned areas
- Exercise early morning or late evening
- Regular grooming
- Never leave your pet in a car, even for a few minutes

🌼 Spring is in the air… and so are allergies! 🍃

With spring comes warmer weather, blooming flowers… and unfortunately, seasonal allergies for many of our pets. Just like people, dogs and cats can develop sensitivities to pollens, grasses, and other environmental triggers.

Common signs of spring allergies in pets: include
- Itchy skin, paws, or ears
- Red or watery eyes
- Sneezing or runny nose
- Excessive licking or chewing
- Recurrent ear or skin infections

If left untreated, allergies can make your pet uncomfortable and even lead to secondary health issues. The good news is that there are many ways we can help - from soothing treatments to long-term management plans tailored to your pet’s needs.

Dr. Shona has been passionate about helping animals for as long as she can remember! After chasing her dream all the way to James Cook University, she graduated with her Veterinary Science degree in 2024 and joined our team in January 2025!

She’s especially keen to grow her skills in orthopaedic cases and ophthalmology — always eager to learn something new! 💙

Originally from a cattle property in southwest Queensland, Shona has embraced the Emerald lifestyle, loving the mix of country charm and adventure. When she’s not caring for patients, you’ll find her soaking up the outdoors 🏃‍♀️🐎

✨ Fun fact: Dr Shona would switch places with a Cheetah to be able to run 100kms in 30 seconds! She also just got her own puppy, WILMA 🐶
