🌼 Spring is in the air… and so are allergies! 🍃

With spring comes warmer weather, blooming flowers… and unfortunately, seasonal allergies for many of our pets. Just like people, dogs and cats can develop sensitivities to pollens, grasses, and other environmental triggers.

Common signs of spring allergies in pets: include
- Itchy skin, paws, or ears
- Red or watery eyes
- Sneezing or runny nose
- Excessive licking or chewing
- Recurrent ear or skin infections

If left untreated, allergies can make your pet uncomfortable and even lead to secondary health issues. The good news is that there are many ways we can help - from soothing treatments to long-term management plans tailored to your pet’s needs.

MEET THE TEAM - Dr Shona! 🐾👩‍⚕️

Dr. Shona has been passionate about helping animals for as long as she can remember! After chasing her dream all the way to James Cook University, she graduated with her Veterinary Science degree in 2024 and joined our team in January 2025!

She’s especially keen to grow her skills in orthopaedic cases and ophthalmology — always eager to learn something new! 💙

Originally from a cattle property in southwest Queensland, Shona has embraced the Emerald lifestyle, loving the mix of country charm and adventure. When she’s not caring for patients, you’ll find her soaking up the outdoors 🏃‍♀️🐎

✨ Fun fact: Dr Shona would switch places with a Cheetah to be able to run 100kms in 30 seconds! She also just got her own puppy, WILMA 🐶

⚠️ Spring is here and so are the snakes! ⚠️

With warmer weather, snakes are on the move - and our pets are most at risk.

Watch for snake bite signs: sudden collapse, wobbliness, muscle tremors, dilated pupils, drooling, vomiting, or difficulty breathing. (Often no bite marks!)

If you suspect a bite:
🐍 Keep your pet calm and still.
🐍 Don’t try to catch the snake.
🐍 Get to the vet immediately - call ahead if you can.

Prevention tips:
🐍 Keep grass short & yards clear.
🐍 Avoid long grass on walks.
🐍 Supervise pets outside.

🌿🚫 Did you know many common houseplants can be dangerous for cats? 🚫🌿

Some plants that look beautiful in your home or garden can be harmful – even fatal – to our feline friends. Lilies, Sago Palms, Daffodils, Hyacinths, Tulips, and Autumn Crocus are just a few examples of toxic plants.

Symptoms of poisoning may include:
🐾 Drooling
🐾 Vomiting and/or diarrhoea
🐾 Lethargy or weakness
🐾 Tremors or seizures
🐾 Difficulty breathing
🐾 Collapse

This list is not exhaustive – there are heaps of plants that can cause illness in cats, ranging from mild to life-threatening.

If you suspect your cat has nibbled on a toxic plant, call us immediately on 4987 6800. You can also contact the Australian Animal Poisons Hotline on 1300 869 738 for non-urgent advice.

Let’s keep our curious cats safe by being mindful of what plants they can access indoors and outdoors! 💚🐱

MEET THE TEAM - Dr. Lily! 🐾👩‍⚕️

Dr. Lily is one of the amazing vets at Maraboon Vet Surgery! After graduating from James Cook University in December 2023, she gained valuable experience working in mixed practices across South East Queensland before joining our team in March 2025.

As a mixed animal veterinarian, Dr. Lily cares for both small and large animal patients, with a strong passion for large animal medicine and a growing love for small animal surgery. Her clinical work is driven by a deep commitment to high-quality care and animal wellbeing.

She’s passionate about helping animals in need and loves working with the incredible Maraboon team - saying it feels like being part of a family. 💚

When she’s not in the clinic, Dr. Lily enjoys the outdoors, horse riding, reading, gardening and getting involved in local sporting events. At home, she’s kept company by her beloved rescue pets, dogs Axel and Cruiser, Tilly the cat, and her horse, Sheriff. 🐶🐱🐴

✨ Fun fact: She’d love to switch places with her cat Tilly for a day (the ultimate lazy lifestyle)… but she’s terrified of chooks! 🐔😅

🐈🐈‍⬛ CAT VACCINATIONS OUT OF STOCK 🐈🐈‍⬛

Unfortunately, the veterinary industry is experiencing a national shortage on cat vaccinations. Our clinics are now officially out of stock and cannot administer any more cat vaccinations. Our suppliers have let us know that F3 vaccinations should be back in stock by July 2024. Still no TBA on FIV vaccinations. Our team will keep you all posted.

In the meantime, if your pet is due for a vaccination, please give us a call to get your cat/kitten(s) added to the waitlist and we'll be sure to give you a call once they arrive.
