Clean Hoof = Healthy Hoof
There can be lots of bacterial problems with the wet weather, creating a world of pain for some horses, from seedy toe, to whiteline disease, delamination of the hoof wall (in serious cases), thrush & therefore possible future abscessing.

One of the simplest ways to prevent many of these hoof problems (& I do say simple) is to clean your horses, ponies or donkeys hooves out frequently…… yes that’s it.

Once the mud is removed the oxygen will kill the bacteria, I always clean my own horses hooves out when they get their daily hard fed, not only do they have healthy hooves but they associate picking up hooves with a pleasant experience.

You can apply topical treatments if there is bacteria, or even as prevention. The below image is a weekly treatment of ‘The Worlds Best Hoof Oil’, which I’m currently using.

If however you can’t pick out hooves out daily the best preventative strategies are to pack the collateral grooves & frog with a hoof clay & apply bug buster to the whiteline. If there’s separation I also use the Bare Equine copper blue balls.

Why keeping on top of your horse's hoof hygiene is important!

🐎 Rehabilitation of lower limb injuries 🐎
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Unfortunately your four legged friend has a suspected lower limb injury, what do you do now??
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️ GET A DIAGNOSIS FROM YOUR VET ⭐️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After researching the internet your mind is blown by all the possibilities to help rehabilitate back to previous work and fitness level. Where do you start?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are few tips that form the basis of any rehabilitation plan:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💥 Rehab starts from the diagnosis.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💥 Get a team consisting of vets, farriers and physios to work together for the best possible outcome.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💥 Speak with a professional to discuss the therapies that fit your budget and are readily available to you. There are plenty of therapies available which will optimise the healing : regenerative medicine, therapeutic ultrasound, Cold laser, mineral spa and underwater treadmill etc.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💥 Don’t rush the process - the longer you take to rehab the better the outcome.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💥 ALWAYS have a re-evaluation by the vet before changing anything in your rehabilitation programme.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If your horse is injured and your confused about the possibilities and options available to you please get in contact with your vet or myself to find out more.

I'm very excited to share an important milestone that one of my clients reached last week! Lily is a jerusalem donkey that I have been working with for the better part of a year. She has a strong fear instinct which has been, and still is, our biggest hurdle. Despite this though, she is still very sweet and friendly (at times!)

Our main desired outcome is to be able to trim her feet, without sedation and without stress. For a donkey like Lily who fears the leaves on the trees are out to get her, this was something that at one point seemed hard to imagine. But she has gained confidence upon confidence and continues to show that with time and the right approach she is brave and willing. She had her first little trim last week which she handled like a champ! Here she is receiving support from her much more confident sister while I trim her hooves!

Working with these kind of horses, ponies and donkeys is something I get so much joy out of. Especially in moments like these when it is so rewarding. Here's to many more trims for Lily the donkey!

This set-up trim I did this week is too good not to share! As challenging as these trims can be - especially in the middle of Summer - they are also equally satisfying!

A set-up trim is an important first step in maintaining your horses hooves barefoot and sound. It will usually take a little longer than a standard maintenance trim because extra care is taken to first get to know the horse and their hooves. The general health of the hooves is evaluated and considered, and a plan is formed. Sometimes more hoof needs to be taken off, as was the case in this instance, or sometimes less is removed in order to maintain soundness during the rehab process. Every hoof is different and should be treated as such, which is why a set-up trim is so important to get each hoof on the right path to being healthy and sound!

🤩🤩 It's good to be back!! 🤩🤩

After 6 weeks off due to a fractured wrist, today is my first official day back on the job. If you are waiting to hear from me, please bear with me while I message clients this afternoon!

Thanks to all my amazing clients and ponies who are helping to make my job that bit easier. It is appreciated! 🥰

🌿Growth and Perspective🌿

When I first started trimming, I thought:

I had answers that no one else had
I have incessant questions
I was doing an awesome trim
Traditional farriers were ignorant + uneducated
Steel shoes were bad
Barefoot is best for every horse
Any trim cycle past 8 weeks was wrong
You should do X and never do Y and don't even THINK about Z.

Now I think:

I have some answers!
Most of which are commonly understood if you dedicate your mind to this craft

Still have lots of questions.....
I do a way better trim than I used to
Traditional farriers have a different education than I do
Steel shoes are not bad + plenty of hooves need some kind of protection

Barefoot is best for some horses and owners and not others,
for very nuanced reasons on a case by case basis

Trim cycles vary a lot depending on the horse, hoof health or distortion, time of year, and also having clients and scheduling to accommodate.

You can do what you want with your horse, but I recommend X and Y because....

💜

Humility, open mindedness, and ability to collaborate with (be curious about) other professionals will get you a long way in this business. Individual hoofcare providers are set up to be isolated, but having a community is way more fun and enlightening.

ALSO.

It's very easy to assume you have all the answers until you meet the horses who confound you. They are our ultimate teachers. And just like humans, they have their own stories and solutions that work best. I've had the privilege of having my eyes and hands on hundreds of horses full time for years now and I still learn something new every day. Horses will humble you and remind you to stay open and curious.

PS Coops says he can do it better.

If you've met me with your horses, you've likely gotten to hear some of my thoughts on your horses' feet and their front teeth, or incisors. I have a wonderful advantage getting to know horses and watching them over the years...and I'm learning such cool things about the hoof-dental-body balance. Th...

Springtime does not only mean warmer days and blooming flowers - it is also the time when worms are in full egg-laying mode!

For horse owners' with horses on grass, now is the time to be vigilant! FEC's should be performed at the beginning and end of Spring. The worm most prevalent this time of year is the small strongyle, also known as the small red-worm or cyathostomin.

The good news is these worms have a high success rate with a broad range of drugs, however FEC's are important to determine when to administer and ensure there is no worm resistance towards the drug.

Get in touch to organise a FEC for your horse or herd!
