Hello Boort community.
We have been up to the hospital to check on Stewart the swan this morning but it looks like he has made his way back to the lake and is happily paddling around and enjoying this lovely Boort weather.
3 weeks ago we did have to have him in at the vet clinic for a check up as he had a stomach upset and some diarrhoea. We ask that the community please stop feeding him. He is able to forage food for himself and although you feel you are helping this can lead to him being unwell. If you do feel he is unwell please call the clinic and we are happy to come out and assess him.

Just before we close for the Christmas holidays I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support this year. It's been an amazing year moving into the new clinic. We are a family owned independent business and this year have even welcomed Lily and Sid, my kids, as they take on after school work at the clinic. It has been a fantastic year caring for your gorgeous pets. At this time of year we also reflect on all the special patients we have had to say goodbye to over the year. Thank you for letting us be part of your pet's lives, some of them right from their first puppy or kitten visit. Each one holds a special place in our hearts. We also had to say goodbye to our beloved Henry in November so we understand how hard it is. May your Christmas be filled with much joy, happiness and plenty of furry cuddles. See you all in 2024. Take care and be safe Fiona

To our valued clients at BVS we would like to wish you a wonderful and safe festive season with your family, friends and furbabies.

This year has seen a lot of changes at BVS. In July we moved into our new rooms at 56-62 Godfrey st. It has been a long awaited move and after a lot of hard work, planning, permits and set backs, we finally did it. We hit the ground running on July 1st and haven't looked back.

This year has been another extremely busy year and to recharge our staff for the year ahead we will be having a few extra days off between Christmas and the new year. Note this is different to years gone by. In the past we have opened between the public holidays. This year we will be taking an extended break.

We encourage anyone that is on long term medications to reach out in the next few weeks to ensure that you have enough to see you through. We are very busy and if your medication is due for a review please call to secure an appointment as they are filling fast.

This year we will close on Friday December 22nd at lunchtime and reopen on Tuesday January 2nd at 8.30 am.

During the public holidays if you need advice or veterinary assistance please call

Central Vic Emergency on 0413898331

They will be available from 6pm Friday the 22nd of December until 8am Wednesday the 27th of December and Friday 29th of December at 6pm through to Tuesday the 2nd of January at 8am.

They practice out of McIvor Road veterinary clinic 29 Michael St Bendigo and will be available during this time. Please call first to arrange an appointment if needed. We hope you don't have to call them but appreciate that they can allow us to have a break and spend time with our loved ones over the holidays.

Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you all in the new year.

Fiona, Grant, Kathy, Madeleine, Lily and Sidney.

Just a reminder to be vigilant this time of year. This week we have hospitalised and treated five animals with brown snake bite. The symptoms can be variable, as can the onset of clinical signs, depending on what part of the body is bitten and how much venom is injected.

Some of the signs to look for include

-sudden vomit and collapse, or wobbly hindlegs, followed by apparent recovery. A lot of dogs who are envenomated will have this apparent recovery phase but then will relapse later
- hindlegs wobbliness/ataxia
-paralysis
-changes or effort in breathing
-lethargy
-dilated pupils
-bleeding
-discoloured/ bloody urine
-loss of bladder or bowel control
-muscle tremors

Some animals can have one or all of these symptoms. So if you are unsure if your pet has been bitten it is essential you get in contact with a vet.

With cats they can have any or all of the above but will often have a change in the tone of their meow and a bunny hopping gait before paralysis.

The sooner an animal receives treatment the more likely they are to survive. Our success rate is very good when animals receive treatment. The earlier this happens the less recovery time and generally less time spent hospitalised with us.

There are some tests we can do when you are unsure if your animal has been bitten and sometimes we are lucky to find that they haven't been bitten and no treatment is necessary at all.

On a side note we have a lot of people ask about the use of vitamin C for snake bite. There is no evidence to support the use of vitamin C with Australian snakes particularly the brown snake which we see in this area. If someone says they have done this and their animal has survived perhaps they had a dry bite where no venom was released or the animal was not bitten at all.

Generally dogs do require treatment with antivenin for a successful outcome. Some cats are able to survive without antivenin but not all cats ( it's always best to check with a vet and at a minimum receive supportive treatment). So once again if you are suspicious but unsure whether they have been bitten or not the best thing you can do is seek veterinary attention ASAP. The sooner they receive treatment the more positive the outcome is likely to be.

We are very happy today to send the last of the five animals home to their owner for some extra special cuddles tonight.

It's the end of an era.... It's been twenty three and a half years since I started working at Boort veterinary services and 8 years since I purchased the clinic but today was our last official day trading out of 95 Godfrey street. It's very exciting to be moving into the new premises. Can't wait for you all to see it.
What a massive effort from so many people to get where we are tonight. Thank you so much to my amazing family ( Grant , Lily and Sid), my wonderful staff, family, friends and our amazing community who have been very supportive in this venture.
We still have a few things to do but as of Monday we will be trading out of 56-62 Godfrey street next to Arnold family butchers. This week we are running reduced consultation hours as we settle into the new place. Please call the usual number, that hasn't changed. 🥰
I have lots of people to thank but that will follow. It's been a huge day.

13/06/2023

Our signage has been removed from the old building but we are continuing to trade out of here for now. Hopefully not long until the move into our new location🤞. It's looking fabulous.

Just a little reminder to please be kind particularly to our lovely, amazing staff on the phones and front desk. We have been extremely busy in recent times but WE ARE ONLY HUMAN and there are only so many hours in the day. We are trying our best to see as many animals as possible but sometimes there may be a wait. Please be kind to our staff as abuse and rudeness of any kind will not be tolerated.

Today, we proudly launch our national campaign "We're Only Human", urging people to be kind to vet staff.

Our goal is to help prevent su***de in the veterinary industry which is all too common - on average one vet takes their life every 12 weeks.

Posters like this will be displayed in vet clinics across Australia, asking people to take a pledge in support of vets.

You can help too - please click on the link and TAKE THE PLEDGE, and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Together, let's stand in solidarity with our wonderful vets 👉 https://sophieslegacy.com/campaigns/only-human

What a wonderful community we live in. All week we have heard amazing stories of community spirit, volunteering and helping each other out sandbagging/ moving stock etc. Today I've just got home from work after another long day and am overwhelmed by the generosity of our community offering their dogs to be blood donors if needed. Thank you all , we now have an extensive list to call on if needed. Hopefully we will not have to take you up on the offer anytime soon. Take care the team at BVS 🥰

This is Henry ( our hero and Fiona's own dog). Yesterday a critically ill patient arrived at the clinic and needed a blood transfusion. With the flood waters surrounding Boort getting another donor made it difficult for this time sensitive transfusion. Henry to the rescue! Henry and our patient are recovering nicely. It was all hands on deck for the Caine family as Sidney( Fiona's son), who is studying remotely due to school closures, came in to help also on top of Grant ( Fiona's husband) who is already taking on the role of vet nurse this week due to our other nurses unable to get in.
If you live in the Boort township and have a healthy young dog more than 20 kg bodyweight and would be willing to donate blood if needed please PM the clinic to go on our register.

With all the water we have around at the moment the mosquitos are out in force. There are several options that we have in stock to help repel them from your animals. Please call or drop in if you need some advice.

Happy vet nurses day to Kathy, Madeleine and Grant who was actually working on vet nurses day. Grant is normally a behind the scenes IT guy and all round helper for the clinic however today with flood water affecting our other staff he has been called in to fill the role. I couldn't do this job without the support of all three of you particularly over the last 2.5 years. You make every day enjoyable to come to work. Looking forward to next year, hopefully it's not so wet and we can celebrate in the new clinic🥰

12/10/2022

This morning the phones will not be answered until approx 11am as Fiona is out on farm calls and our receptionist can't get in due to the forecast rain/flooded roads. You can leave a message on our answering machine and we will respond when back in the clinic. Take care the team at BVS
