Meet little Pepper who came in to the vets last to get her teeth cleaned and assessed. Pepper had a dental procedure which included a full set of dental X-rays and a dental scale and polish to help keep her teeth nice and healthy.

Dental care is essential for dogs for several reasons:
💚 Overall Health: Just like in humans, dental health is closely linked to overall health in dogs. Poor oral hygiene can lead to various health issues such as gum disease, tooth decay, and even systemic problems like heart disease and kidney infections.

💚 Prevention of Dental Disease: Regular dental care can prevent the development of dental diseases such as periodontal disease, which is one of the most common health problems in dogs. This disease can cause pain, tooth loss, and infection if left untreated.

💚Prevention of Bad Breath: Bad breath is often the first sign of dental problems in dogs. By maintaining good dental hygiene, you can help keep your dog's breath fresh.

💚Prevention of Tooth Loss: Tooth loss can occur due to decay, trauma, or other dental issues. Keeping your dog's teeth clean and healthy can help prevent premature tooth loss.
Improved

💚Quality of Life: Dogs with healthy teeth are more likely to have a better quality of life. They can eat comfortably without pain, enjoy their favourite chew toys, and avoid discomfort associated with dental problems.

To maintain your dog's dental health, it's important to brush their teeth regularly, provide dental treats or toys designed to promote oral hygiene, and schedule regular dental check-ups with your veterinarian.

Chickens have some pretty clever ways of beating the winter chill, but they may still need your help. Like all birds, chickens use their feathers for insulation by fluffing them up and trapping the air. But for the times when nature is hard to predict, good pet care involves providing appropriate refuge.

❄️Insulation❄️
In cold parts of Australia, you could insulate your chicken coop with tree branches, cardboard, or straw. Care should be taken if hay or straw is used for insulation, as these can become infested with mold and vermin and carry chicken parasites. Also, remember to keep the insulation tidy. Keeping the coop clean and dry is essential as most bacteria, fungi, and parasites thrive in warm, moist environments.

☀️Warmer climates☀️
If you live in one of the warmer Australian states then you probably won’t need to install insulation in your chicken coop at all. Open, ventilated coops are more important. Learn more tips on coop setup on our website, or alternatively, visit your local Greencross Vets for expert advice.

Winter is here! We feel it's going to be a super cold one, and chances are if you are feeling cold your furry friend is too.

Here are some ways to keep your pet warm in the Winter:

💚Keep your pet inside
💚Provide a warm, soft, elevated bed
💚Warm coats are great for pets that are senior, small or have thin coats
💚Move your guinea pigs hutch inside the house or garage
💚Provide extra straw and hay so small pets can burrow and hide
💚Keep all bedding dry
💚Wrap a loose blanket over your pet, but don’t tuck them in. They still need to be able to move away from it if they overheat
💚Walk your furry friend during the day when it’s not as cold

MEET THE TEAM WEEK 17

Dr Rowena Spreckley - Veterinarian

Rowena grew up in a small village in Northern NSW close to the bush, beach and mountain ranges. From a young age the natural world including animals were a big part of her life, and so of course becoming a veterinarian was an aspiration of hers.

Rowena was able to accomplish this after moving to QLD and studying at UQ Gatton. Rowena thoroughly enjoys all aspects of being a small animal veterinarian, however her passion lies with internal medicine, especially gastrointestinal medicine, endocrinology and infectious diseases.

You will find Rowena in her spare time bushwalking, bird watching, cooking, gardening and spending time with Louie her much loved Kelpie cross.

🚨 Attention Pet Owners! 🚨

Emergency and Specialty Vets are sounding the alarm about the rise in paralysis ticks affecting our pets. 🐾 With the unseasonal warmth lingering into autumn and rain, the conditions are ripe for these dangerous pests.
At Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Gosford, several beloved pets have tragically lost their lives due to severe tick paralysis. Dr. Natashia Evans, an Emergency and Critical Care Specialist at ARH Gosford, emphasises the importance of year-round parasite prevention, even as we transition into winter.

Skipping prevention can lead to devastating consequences.
Even a delay of just one or two days can put your pet at risk. Set reminders, and if in doubt, administer prevention a couple of days early.

Pet owners are urged to perform daily tick checks, as early detection can save lives.

For emergency assistance, contact your nearest animal hospital: https://www.emergencyvet.com.au/contact-us.html
