Goldie 💛💛💛
“When Goldie arrived at SASH and was admitted by the overnight emergency vet, we were told her chances were probably 50/50. Every day that she survived and thrived, we knew her chances of survival increased. After two weeks, she was home and in the next stage of her recovery. Three months after her accident she was back to living her best life, with a sparkle back in her beautiful eyes.” –Mark, Goldie’s human brother.
✨Goldie’s story ✨
Goldie found her forever home at the sweet old age of 11, to carry out her golden years residing on a farm in the Southern Highlands, with her farmer dad, basking in the sun by day and curling up by the fire by night.
One day, whilst sunbathing on the driveway, Goldie was unfortunately run over by a car. Her beloved owner rushed her to B**g B**g Veterinary Hospital. Goldie’s internal organs were exposed, so Dr Chevonne Willis performed an emergency surgery, to stabilise her for transfer to SASH.
Waiting for Goldies arrival at the SASH Trauma Centre in North Ryde was her human brother Dr Mark; a vet with over 20 years' experience, who understood how critical her condition was.
Goldie had various injuries, including a fractured pelvis, a broken leg and devastatingly severe damage to her internal organs. In this state, Goldie had a 50% survival rate. But with each day in ICU, she fought hard and with every day that she held on, her family knew her chances of survival increased.
Goldie spent a total of two weeks at SASH in the ICU, being managed by a team of Specialists, Vets and Nurses, in multiple disciplines including Emergency & Critical Care, Surgery, Anaesthesia and Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation.
Some of the treatments over the duration of her stay included:
- A blood transfusion to replace blood loss
- A pain management plan including an epidural catheter to deliver targeted pain relief
- Surgery to repair her broken leg
- A nasogastric tube to allow for feeding and nutrients
- Daily bandage changes and wound management care
- Rehabilitation and physiotherapy to maintain muscle and range of motion through her pelvis
- Intensive care from dedicated nurses working 24 hours a day to bring light back into the life of Goldie and her family.
The level of care and intervention that Goldie needed, was extensive, but fortunately she was in a hospital where such care and expertise is available. Dr Mark says, “I’ve been a vet for 20 years and I kept telling people if Goldie was run over 20 years ago when I was a new grad, there is no way she would have survived.”
This statement is a testament to the advancement of veterinary medicine – something that is often overlooked. Just as human medicine is forever evolving, as is the veterinary industry, and SASH is honoured to lead the way in pioneering advancements for the benefit of all pets.
Today, Goldie lives her best life. 🧡
