Late summer is full of maturing grass seed heads, which can trigger, or worsen environmental allergens.

Reducing exposure to the pollens can help, or washing.or bathing the paws, face and belly when coming in from outside.
I use the itchy dog herbal rinse to help wash off the allergens and tone the skin.

I love snakes, I really do.
But I also really love my guinea pigs.

Seems the snakes love them, too.

On Thursday morning, I found snake 1 in the cage, with three piggies missing.
We caught the snake to relocate. Blocked up where we thought he got in.

Then on Friday morning I found snake 2, with another 3 piggies missing. Obviously I didn't quite snakeproof the
Cage.

Definitely not the same snake either.

Poor little pigs

Anxious pets needs support to help them to regulate their nervous system. Switching out of the fight or flight, or reactive side of the nervous system, to the calm rest and digest or relax side.

Dogs are perceptive to the energies around them, and it is difficult for them to regulate when their person is in a reactive energy state.

Sitting with them and calmly patting them. Very slowly. Make each stroke deliberate and mindful. No fast rapid patting, ruffing up of the fur or other high energy engagement.

Centre yourself, and be a calm energy for your dog to interact with. take slow, deep breaths. An audible long slow outbreath can help too.

When engaging your dog, use a low and slow voice. Try to get everyone in the house to do this as well.

Lower the energy in the house. if the kids are running around screaming and laughing, and the tv is blasting or people are arguing, your dog will naturally feel on high alert and reactive. Pop the kids outside to play, or change to a quiet activity. Turn the tv off or at least turn the volume down. Turn off any violent or thriller movies. the music in these are composed to invoke feelings of stress and bring you to high alert. this works on dogs too.

Put on slow and gentle music, like a meditation or relaxation soundtrack. This helps to lower everyone energy.

If you have an anxious dog, and want to join us for The Canine Anxiety ecourse, you will learn how to help your anxious dog.

Does your dogs food look like brightly coloured vegetable shapes?

These shapes and colours are only for the owners benefit. It makes the meal look more varied and looks like they are getting their meats and greens.

Some food colourings can be natural, such as turmeric, beetroot and paprika.

Do artificial colours affect behaviour? Probably. But the cheaper food options that use these colourings are going to have more issues than just colourings.

Learn more about different food which may impact your dogs behaviour in my upcoming canine anxiety course.
We will cover food which can have a negative impact on the nervous system, and foods which can be protective and beneficial for anxious dogs.

Bringing a puppy home is one of the most exciting times.

Puppy breath
Sleepy cuddles
Cuteness galore

Unfortunately this can be one of the most stressful times in a dog's life!

Separated from their mum, and siblings
New environment
New faces
Change diet
Rules
Toilet training
Crying themselves to sleep

The way we approach this time in their life has to impact their stress response, and may play a role in how some dogs react to stress in their adult lives.
We create learned helplessness and feelings of abandonment. This is certainly not the way to build strong healthy connection and confident and resilient dogs.

If you have an anxious dog, and want to learn more about supporting them naturally, join my anxious canine ecourse stating January 24th

Zizyphus is an amazing herb for helping anxious dogs, horses even humans.

This can be a high dose herb, but luckily is quite palatable and has a wide safety margin.

So your dog may not have a daily yoga practice.

Other ways you can help to regulate their nervous system is with a calm and slow walk, gentle petting or brushing. Even a quiet night on the couch to rebalance the nervous system.
These are all things which can help, depending on your individual dog, and what helps to soothe them.

What proactive stress management techniques do you do with your dog?

How good is 2025!
I'm starting with a new space 1-2 days a week.
This will give me somewhere to hold stock, and also a pick up point for clients, when working out a suitable time and place can be problematic, and*bonus* saves in shipping costs for locals.

Even better, I have a space for in person consults!

I've been getting more enquiries about what I offer for people health.

Yes for those that ask- I am a fully qualified human naturopath too.

Fridays will be my main day, and possibly mondays. However if I have a client, you will find a "please come back later" sign on the door.

I am super excited!

Hiding, and retreating can be a way your dog regulates some big feelings, whilst feeling safe and protected away in a quiet place.

If your dog needs this space, its best to leave them there until they are comfortable enough to come out on their own. Forcing them out of this safe place will increase stress for your dog, even if it makes you feel better!

Ahhh Holidays are over for me.

Not for everyone else in my family. They are still in holiday mode! School doesn't go back for nearly another month.

It has been the first year that I have blocked out time properly, and really had a good rest over the Christmas break. Our car even decided a trip away was not on the cards.

Stress any anxiety is a real issue for us as much as it is for our dogs, and I was reaching capacity just before my break.

I have done very little other than spending time at the beach, eating lots of food, and drinking more alcohol than recommended.

Taking the time out was so important for my mental health, and I have come back to the new year with a new found energy and excitement.

What did you do for your mental health over the break?

I am back in clinic, and have bookings available.
If you need some health support for yourself, or your furry companion, now is the time!
