This is Fern. Fern is...chaotic...at the best of time. πŸ˜‚

Fern is an Agouti Varigated Berkshire (A/A H/h V/-, carrying -/r aka Ruby Eye Dilute or RED)

I mean it when I say Fern is chaotic. She is a mega kleptomaniac. She gets it from her mother, Killa, but Fern takes it to a whole new level. Fern is a large part of the reason we now use hoppers on our cages to feed our rats, as she would steal and hoard the food blocks as if she was a dragon hoarding gold. πŸ˜‚

Not only does she hoard food (amongst other things), she likes to throw bedding out of the cage and make an enormous mess, and she is the reason we use cheap dishtowels/face washers as hammocks - because she chews them to shreds and absolutely destroys them.

Despite her being a bit of a turd, Fern is my baby. She is from our very first litter, and holds a very special place in my heart. She may be a chaotic gremlin, but she is my chaotic gremlin. πŸ’œπŸ€

Watch out, here comes Lupè!

This odd looking boy is a Mink Rex Varigated Hooded (a/a m/m h/h V/- Re/-)

Lupe is one of the handful of Rex boys we have in our breeding program. Rex coats are curly, and are more coarse than standard coat rats. They even have curly whiskers!

Breeding a Rex to a Standard coat rat, you should end up with an even split of Rex and Standard babies!

While we have only had 2 Rex litters currently, we are looking forward to having more and working on our Rex line.

Another FNAF rat? You bet. This is Chica.πŸ₯

Chica is another one of Freddy's children. Just like her dad, Chica is a Cinnamon Self (A/a r/r m/m H/H, carrying -/p aka Pink Eye Dilute or PED).

Chica is always the first one to the cage door, and is trying to leap into your hands the second it's open. She absolutely loves coming out and having free roam time and cuddles with the humans.

Chica DOES take after her video game counterpart in the sense that she loves pizza - well, pizza crust. She's an absolute feral for it πŸ˜…

She, along with Freddy and her two half sisters, Cassidy and Baby (are you starting so see a FNAF theme here? πŸ˜‰) are the foundations for our self line. We intend to slowly work towards black self rats at some point.

The only thing Maestro conducts is the cuddle puddle! πŸ˜…

Maestro is a Mink Berkshire Wedge (a/a m/m H/h). We do not know what he carries, as we have not yet bred from this beautiful boy. We will update this post once we know what he carries.

Maestro is a lovely, calm, and social boy. He isn't as adventurous as some of our other boys, he prefers to just chill on the couch and have cuddles. He is a bit cheeky with the other boys though, as he will kick other boys out of the way in the cuddle puddle to get the perfect spot πŸ˜‚.

We are excited to get a litter from him soon 😊

Make way for the Princess! No seriously, I mean it. πŸ‘‘

Princess is a Buff Varigated Berkshire (a/a r/r H/h V/-, carries 0/p aka Pink Eye Dilute or PED).

Princess gained her name from...well being a bit of a Princess! When she first came home, any time we, or another rat touched her, she would voice her opinions and give a little squeak! We often found ourselves going "Oh stop being a Princess!", and decided that should be her name πŸ˜…. She has since settled, and no longer has big opinions about being touched (well...most of the time 🀭).

She has just recently had her first litter, and she is being a great mumma. She was a little grumpy for the first few days after birth, but shes back to being her usual self now.

Some breeders don't tolerate any sass from their rats, but we give our girls a few days after birth to come good, especially maiden mothers. Can you imagine giving birth to between 8 and 16 children? I think you'd be pretty irritable for a few days as well! We do not tolerate mothers who try to bite us, as that falls under Maternal Aggression and we specifically breed away from MA (even though it only affects does while they are pregnant/whelping their babies, and they usually return to normal after their hormones settle).

I promise you, Foxy is nowhere near as terrifying as his video game counterpart! 🦊

Foxy is a Silverfawn Berkshire (A/A p/p H/h, carrying -/r, aka Ruby Eye Dilute or RED)

If you couldn't guess, Foxy is Freddy's son, and admittedly, one of our favourite rats. Foxy was the only Silverfawn in his litter (the rest being Fawn, Argentine or Cinnamon) and he stole my heart immediately. He was the sweetest and kindest boy from that litter, and has shaped up to be a stunning and gentle buck.

Whilst being sweet and gentle, he is definitely not afraid of standing up to rowdy bucks. He has put quite a few boys in their place, and just like his father, has been a Godsend to helping us rehabilitate and rehome rescue rats.

We end up with some funny names for our rats. Originally, Pepto was going to be named Pepper, but my co-breeder (in her tired state) accidentally said Pepto, and thus her name, Pepto Bismol, came to be. πŸ’Š

Pepto is a Black Varigated Hooded (a/a h/h V/-, carrying -/r aka Ruby Eye Dilute or RED)

Pepto is Lotties (see her over on ), Xannys and Bandits mother. Pepto absolutely loves cuddles and can usually be found ontop of the cuddle puddle pile in the hammocks. She debatably is in our top 5 best mummas in our rattery. She basically handed her babies to us, and once we were done with them, we would literally hand her babies back to her one by one. πŸ˜…

Pepto has only had one litter so far, but we have big plans for her in the future.

Introducing Badger!

Badger has sired 2 litters for us already, and he has produced some absolutely stunning babies both times. Lottie, over at on Instagram is one of his children, and you can see what cutie she is! He is also the father to Xanny and Bandit.

Badger is a Black Hooded, (a/a h/h and carries -/r and -/p, aka Ruby Eye Dilute or RED, and Pink Eye Dilute or PED).

Badger is a phenomenal breeder, and raiser of our babies. Around 4/5 weeks old our baby boys are moved from the maternity cage, to the paternity cage (the grow out cage for our boys), and we often have Badger in our paternity cage to help socialize our young boys. Badger is one of our few boys that actually still plays with the babies, and let's them "dominate" him (think how lions play with their cubs and let them win).

We are excited to see where this boy leads us in our breeding program 😊

Killa DeMaul! (Or Killa for short)

Killa is an Agouti Variegated Hooded (A/A h/h V/- and carries -/r, aka Ruby Eye Dilute or RED).

Named after a side character from (and the inspiration behind our rattery name), Killa is the OG rat. She's the one that started it all. After 3 large litters, which increased in size (8 in her first, 16 in her second and 22 in her third) she now gets to live the rest of her days hoarding food and wrestling her children, grandchildren, and soon to be great grandchildren for the comfiest spot in the cuddle puddle.

She is one of the sweetest (and one of the most chaotic, next to her daughter Fern) rats we own, and it always makes us so happy whenever we open the cage and she is one of the first to say hello.

She has been an amazing matriarch for our mischief, and has taught and guided so many of our past litters, as well as helped us to rehabilitate some rescues we have previously taken in. We can't thank this special girl enough for everything she has done, and will continue to do. πŸ’œ

Figured I'd introduce the man, the myth, the legend, Freddy Fazbear! (aka Frebbie)

Freddy is a bit odd genetically. Whilst he *looks* like a Fawn, genetically, he is a Cinnamon, or Mink Agouti. A/a r/r m/m H/H (and carries -/p, which is the Pink Eye Dilute aka PED). This caused a lot of controversy online, and we were told it was impossible for him to be anything other than a Fawn (Agouti Ruby Eye Dilute) - but Freddy has black eyes, not ruby.

"That's impossible, he must be a really dark ruby" we were told, despite checking eye colour numerous times in various ways, and comparing him to some of the dark ruby eyed rats we have.
"He is definitely black eyes, and has thrown Mink in nearly all his litters, he is not dark ruby" we say.
"It's not possible" we keep being told...

Well clearly, it is. Rat coat colours can range wildly in each "label", and that's okay. That's what makes rat breeding fun!

Another upcoming litter having their first bath πŸ₯Ή We have some rexes in this litter.

To expand further on our previous bath time post, we bath our youngsters before they get a housing upgrade into our maternity cage. Our babies are almost exclusively bathed in plain water, however we have had to use soap in some past situations.

Having a supervised splash in some plain water, especially on a warm summer day, is not harmful to your rats. We do it with our babies as a part of their early neurostimulation and it helps to expose them to a new and unfamiliar environment - which will prepare them for future unfamiliar environments, and they will be better equipped to deal with it due to the early neurostimulation we do.

I did say in my first post that we do things a bit differently in this rattery, some things which the rat world will find very controversial. But our stable, level headed, bombproof babies speak for themselves. πŸ˜‰

Babies first bath! πŸ§ΌπŸ›

Welcome to Roll The Dice Rattery, where we do things a bit differently to others.

Over the next few weeks I (Raine) will be introducing our rats and explaining more as to what we do here at RTDR.

Our babies receive their first bath at around 2 weeks old (after their eyes are open) and just before they go into our larger "maternity" cage.

Enjoy the babies having a splash on this very warm day πŸ’¦
