🐾Pet Poison Prevention Month🐾

XYLITOL! What you need to know!

In humans, xylitol does not stimulate the release of insulin from the pancreas.

However, in different canines, when dogs ingest something with xylitol, the xylitol is more quickly absorbed into the blood stream and may result in a potent release of insulin from the pancreas.
This can cause acute liver failure and drastically drop blood sugar levels within an hour.

The most common household items include toothpaste, chewing gum and sugar free food alternatives.

🐾stay safe everyone!

🐾Pet Poison Prevention Month🐾

March is the perfect time to make sure that plants in our home are either out of reach or are safe to have around our pets.
It is important to know what is safe for our pets before purchasing house plants, planning your spring garden or gifting flowers to someone with pets.

Here are some examples of toxic house plants.
Although there are 1000 plants that are toxic for our animals, these are the most common.

🐶10 “Did you know?” Vet facts🐱

(how many did you know? Comment below)

1. Studies show that pet owners over the age of 65 make 30% fewer visits to the doctor than seniors without pets.

2. Dogs can learn about 250 words! Short words representing objects (treat!) and behaviours (sit!) are easy.

3. A cats nose print is as unique as a humans fingerprint

4. Dogs can “catch yawns” from humans, and vice versa.

5. Cats have been around since ancient Egyptians, but the Sphynx cat is a relatively young breed. The first Sphynx cat was born in 1955 in Toronto, Canada.

6. About 1/3 of a dogs brain mass is devoted to smell, compared with just 5% of a humans brain.

7. Cats purr at a frequency of 20-30 vibrations per second- about the same as a diesel engine!

8. Approximately 25% of dog visits to the veterinarian are for problems with skin and coat.

9. Cats have contributed to the extinction of around 33 bird species worldwide.

10. If a terrier randomly starts to dig, chances are, he’s heard prey moving underground.

👂🏾👂🏻CHECK THOSE EARS 👂🏻👂🏾

Have you checked your pets ears lately?

Environmental conditions, such as extreme heat; foreign objects, such as plant particles; and allergies are all causes for ear troubles!

Bacterial infections are also quite common, such as yeast, fungus or polyps.
Moisture, which can create a prime growing environment for bacteria and yeast are most common in Summer due to the heat.

Things to look out for:
-Head shaking
- Scratching at specific ear
- Dark ear discharge
- Odor
- Redness and swelling of the ear canal
- Crusting or scabs in the ears

The good news is, it’s very easily preventable and an easy fix! If you have any concerns regarding your pets ears, call us on 3263 9977 to discuss!
