Breed Characteristics
Temperament ~ Bespoke Spoodles are friendly and affectionate companion dogs. They are most frequently described as being intelligent, loving, and outgoing. They are of a gentle disposition and make wonderful family pets as they interact well with people and other animals. They are very intelligent dogs making them easy to train. Spoo’s are extremely sociable, curious by nature and have a happy go lucky demeanour. This beautiful breed is highly adaptable and easily fit into households, with or without existing pets and/or children.
Appearance ~ The general appearance of our Bespoke Spoodles is a small to medium sized dog with a round appealing face. They have an athletic body and have a high set tail with an expression that is friendly and is often described as smiling. They have semi long coats ranging from fleece to wool. They have rounded soft floppy ears, brown almond shaped eyes and a brown or black nose depending on coat colour. Bespoke Spoodles’ colouring could range from ruby/red, apricot, tan and cream - with or without white accents. Height at wither: 35cm to 45cm. Weight: 8kg to 12kg.
Coat Types
Like our breeding parents, we anticipate our Bespoke Spoodle puppies to be shed-free, with low allergenic (or hypoallergenic) wavy/curly coats. Bespoke Spoodles’ coats may either be fleece or wool.
The Fleece coat generally has a soft silky texture, quite similar to that of an Angora coat. It can either appear to have a straight wavy look, or a gentle looping curl. The fleece coat rarely sheds, if at all.
The Wool coat is more dense in texture and is very similar to that of a lamb or sheep. It generally has the appearance of spiralling wool however it should not appear too tightly curled. Once again, the wool coat rarely sheds, if at all.
Coat Maintenance
As neither the Fleece or Wool coats shed, your Bespoke Spoodle will require clipping 2-3 times a year. You can do this yourself or take your dog to a professional groomer. Regular grooming will also make the coat more manageable. A good weekly brush should be sufficient.
Training your Bespoke Spoodle
The Spoodle is a highly intelligent breed. They are very quick learners and new owners should have basic commands well under way within the first couple of weeks of taking your puppy home. Early socialisation and obedience is recommended for all puppies. Keeping your training times short and fun will be most effective during puppy and adolescent phases. Generally, Spoodles are very easy to train, and as adults should make obedient and eager to please well-adjusted family dogs.
Exercise Requirements
The Spoodle is an interactive dog that loves to run and play with its family. Spoodles need regular exercise. This phrase is often confused with ‘lots of exercise’ and frequently leads to too much exercise, particularly with young puppies. A 15-30 minute walk on the leash is ideal as daily exercise for a puppy.
Spoodles have a medium energy drive as adult dogs and will enjoy accompanying their family in all of their play and activities – this can include a daily walk, backyard play, swimming, or a trip to the dog park. Bespoke Spoodles also enjoy socialising with other dogs and some are just as comfortable whether living with an active family or spending time on the couch with a less active family watching TV.
Important Information
Puppy Allocation Process
Once you decide to proceed with purchasing a Bespoke Spoodle puppy, we will require a 50% holding/security deposit, which we request to be paid by bank transfer. A full receipt will be given. Once you indicate which puppy you would like, your deposit then secures you that particular puppy, and a Contract shall be completed and signed as soon as possible, showing the all participants details, including the pups name, if known - the Microchip number will be added once this has occurred. We will then offer FaceTime or Skype “live catch-ups” featuring your Bespoke Spoodle pup and their Mumma, brothers and sisters, as often as possible, and do our best to send you updated progress photos also. Deposits are not refundable if you then decide to rescind the Contract.
Purchasing
When you purchase one of our Bespoke Spoodles you can have the peace of mind that your puppy will be coming from a loving family environment. They are brought up in a true home setting where they have the space to run around and be puppies, and also get familiar with the general hustle and bustle of everyday life. All our pups have a wonderful start to life and have lots of love, stimulation, and socialisation. We go the extra mile for you also, by carrying out daily “desensitisation” lessons to ensure that all members of the family, especially the very young, can get up close and personal with the pup, without causing the pup any angst, fright or feelings of discomfort.
Visitation
Here at Bespoke Spoodles, we allow our extended Spoodle-Family the opportunity to come and meet their puppy as often as possible ~ bonding is so important ! You can arrange a mutually convenient time to meet your puppy, once you have placed the holding/security deposit.
Payment
Once the holding/security deposit is received, we do not require final payment until pickup. In instances where puppies require shipping, we require final payment for puppy plus the costs of transport the week of delivery. Once flights are booked (usually 5 workings days before the date of the flight) we will forward you the booking confirmation and request for final payment. The funds will need to be cleared into our account before we will ship the puppy.
We understand people are sensitive around payments to an unknown source given there are many internet scams circulating in today’s world. We welcome all questions, and can be contacted by phone to ease any concerns you may have, or perhaps you could always ask for a FaceTime or Skype “live chat”.
What your Bespoke Spoodle puppy comes with
When you purchase a Bespoke Spoodle pup, you can have the absolute peace of mind that your puppy will be coming from a loving family environment. They are brought up in a true family home environment, where they have the opportunity to be puppies. Your puppy will be 10 weeks of age, and will come:
Vaccinated
Your Bespoke Spoodle puppy will receive its first C3 vaccination at 6 weeks of age. The next C5 vaccination is required at 12 weeks of age. It is very important that you do not take your puppy into public places until the 12 week booster shot has been administered. Your puppy is at risk of deadly diseases and not fully covered until the booster shot is given. It is under strict advice that you keep your puppy in your backyard and away from other dogs that you don’t know their vaccination history during this period.
Microchipped
We register your puppy’s microchip details on Central Animal Records (CAR), online microchip database which identifies your puppy on the microchip database. You will then need to acess the CAR’s website and transfer the microchip into your name.
Wormed
Your Bespoke Spoodle puppy will come wormed with Drontal All-Wormer at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks of age. Worming your puppy is essential to the wellbeing of your dog and can result in a longer life expectancy. A continued worming regime with Drontal once every two weeks until 3 months of age is highly recommended, and then once every month until 12 months of age. When your dog is 12 months of age, worming is required once every three months.
Comprehensive Vet Check-up
Your puppy comes fully Vet checked. Our wonderful and highly experienced Vet, Dr Steve, examines your puppy’s structure, bones, eyes, heart, teeth, ears and skin, and pretty much everywhere else too.
Bedding and Litter Separation Anxiety
Your Bespoke Spoodle puppy should have a small enclosed area where they can sleep. They are likely to be a little upset over the first few nights and will possibly cry throughout the night. To try and settle your puppy, ensure that you put the blanket that came in your “Puppy Pack” on top of their bedding, small soft toys their size, and a hot water bottle in the enclosure over night. This will simulate his litter mates. If you have another dog, try sleeping your puppy with him/her as this will help the separation anxiety.
Food
Puppies are fed a diet consisting of Hills Science Diet kibble - 2 days worth of puppy kibble forms part of your “Puppy Pack”. When you bring your puppy home it is advised to continue this diet for the first couple of weeks. You are then welcome to change to a diet that suits your preference, however you must introduce the new food very, very slowly, whilst watching for any adverse reactions.
Please be aware that a change of environment can lead to stress and an upset tummy (even diarrhoea) for a new puppy. If this occurs feed your puppy cooked rice and shredded cooked chicken (no mince) until stomach/bowel movements are back to normal.
Puppy Proofing
You will need to make sure your yard and house are puppy proof. Your yard will need to be fully fenced with no areas that present a possible escape option. Swimming pools are a serious hazard, and pool fences will need to be improved if a puppy can squeeze through it. It’s also a good idea to keep your puppy from general view of the passing public to prevent people from stealing your dog.
Your house will also need to be prepared. Section off any areas that you don’t want your puppy to be, remove items that you don’t want your puppy to chew and remove any potential hazards to your puppy, such as electrical cords. Baby gates positioned at the bottom and tops of stairwells are a great idea, as pup shouldn’t be running up and down stairs until approximately 6 months of age - the later the better really - and we don’t want pup falling down the stairs either. It is also a very good idea not to let puppy jump down from chairs, lounges or beds etc.
Puppy School
Please think about enrolling your Bespoke Spoodle puppy in Puppy Preschool. Most Vets have excellent classes which provide you with lessons on basic training, advice on all aspects of pet care, discussion of common problems and they allow puppy socialisation in a safe environment.
