Adopting a dog is a great way to give a dog or puppy a second chance by providing a loving fur-ever home.

When it comes to selecting a dog or puppy, take your time to think about what type of dog you are after, and what type of dog is right for you and your family.

📍 Located on Mugga Lane in Symonston, DAS is now open for walk-in adoptions
Monday to Friday, 10am-3pm or Saturday, 10am-2pm.

Enjoy a meet and greet in one of the exercise yards with the dog you’re interested in. You’re also welcome to bring your existing dog so the dogs can be introduced to each other to assess how they interact.

Please note you’ll require proof of identification (for example a driver’s licence) to enter the DAS facility and adopt a dog.

Unfortunately, there is nothing that can 100% prevent intervertebral disk disease in certain breeds. However, there are things you can do to minimize the likelihood of a disk problem such as:

📌 Keep your dog at a healthy weight

📌 Use a harness instead of a neck collar

📌 Curb jumping on and off furniture

📌 Limit high impact activities

📌 Avoid playing tug-o-war

Of course, when all is said and done, the single most important thing you can do is seek professional veterinary care as soon as symptoms appear.

Returning to Work? Make a Happy Home for Your Pets.

Now that restrictions are easing, have you considered the impact on your pets? 🤷

If you’re heading back to the office or out with friends here are some things you can to do support your pets if they experience separation anxiety.

⚽ Play with them before you go to work! 10 minutes teaching your pet a new behaviour or trick can support their long-term wellbeing.
🚶 Go for a 30-minute walk or head to a dog park. Great for you and your pet!
🐾 Keep them occupied by hiding some treats, using a lick mat or creating a sand pit for the diggers out there.
👪 Have a dog walker or family and friends drop over to walk them during the day.
✔️ If you’re still stuck at home, or in quarantine, check you have registered your dog. This is a requirement in the ACT.

We're making it easier to keep your dog's details updated 🐶.

We’ve introduced a new digital dog database for the ACT which will allow dog owners to easily confirm or update their dog's registration details each year, at no cost.

This new database will allow Domestic Animal Services to reunite owners with their lost dogs more easily. It will also allow the ACT Government to better target education, services and infrastructure relating to dogs.

Keep your pets safe for New Years! 🎉

Take your pup for a nice long walk/play during the day (provided it isn't too hot of course) so they are more likely to sleep later on.

Also make sure animals are easily identifiable if lost (microchip, collar with their name and your phone number and/or address).
