Hi All,

I’d like to advise that I’ve decided to take a break from breeding rats to allow more time to be spent with my family.

I still have several tubs of mice going but not on a large scale, so quantities may be hit and miss.

If anyone is looking for a new supplier of rats, mice or quail, I would recommend The Rat Ranch. I’ve learnt a huge amount from Mark and he shares the same values relating to animal welfare.

HPS Feeders is also another great option for people in the North Coast area.

If anyone is interested in breeding their own rodents, I will be selling some tubs.

Cheers
Pete.

I would just like to apologise to all our current and potential customers for my very poor communication including not replying to messages etc of late.

My father has been ill for the last few months and we lost him over the weekend.

Family will always come first, and as a hobby business, this had to take a back seat.

Initially, I planned to close down completely. However, I’ve met and made friends with so many people and my kids actually get enjoyment and pocket money from the business too.

I have decided to downsize to allow more time with my family. This will have some pros and cons for customers.

I plan to reduce my rat output to approximately half of what it was, and mainly focus on selling rats above 50 grams(large weaned) and all sizes above. Obviously this will have some negative impact on a few customers for which I’m sorry.

I do plan to increase my mouse output and offer significantly cheaper mice in bulk bags.
This will obviously have a positive impact on customer, especially wildlife carers etc.

Thanks for the understanding, and I’ll try to respond to orders by the weekend.

What a great weekend spent at the Brisbane Reptile Expo 2024. Thanks to the Brisbane Reptile Society and in particular Shikito's Critters for doing all the hard work over the past 12 months to get something like this happening.

Highlights for me were:

Hanging out with The Rat Ranch and discussing all things rodent related (including the idea of a standardised rodent sizing)

Meeting and chatting with Brett & Leigh of Brett Finds Frogs & QUEENSLAND FROGS, especially in relation to cane toads.

Getting involved with RAWR - Reptile Amphibian Wildlife Rescue. Anne (and her team) and I are on the same page when it comes to getting kids involved with native wildlife. The kids are going to love this!

Thank you to all our customers for your support throughout 2023.

As we step into 2024, we’ve implemented a few changes:

1. We now offer 24/7 pickup at Eatons Hill, providing you with the flexibility to collect your orders at your convenience. The process is simple: make your order, receive a payment link, specify your preferred pickup day, and collect your labelled package in our outdoor freezer. The option for an in-person pickup directly from us in the rodent room at a prearranged time remains available.

2. New, additional pickup location. We can now offer pre-arranged pick-ups at Mitchelton most Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays during business hours.

3. Regrettably, we’ve had to make some adjustment to our prices. Our goal has always been to humanely care for and produce top quality rodents, whilst keeping prices reasonable. Whether you are caring for one or one hundred pets, you won't be paying pet shop prices, and you can see where your rodents are coming from. The most noticeable increases are to large rats and above. It takes a huge amount of time and resources for rats to reach these sizes. Remember when shopping around, compare the weights, not the size name. There is no standardisation of sizing...yet.

4. The national rodent shortage is expected to persist this year, particularly for larger sizes. Quails may offer a viable solution. Our pet snakes and monitors enjoy a diet that includes mice, rats, and quail. Consider substituting the occasional rat for a quail to add some variety. Although we don’t breed quail ourselves, we source them exclusively from a local breeder who shares our ethics and values – The Rat Ranch

Thank you once again,

BFR
