It’s been a loooooong while but we finally have eggs again - yippee!!!
We take huge pride in our eggs. They are free range, 100% organic, our grain is also vegetarian which means they’re not being fed other animal offal, they’re just free ranging on our chemical free/organic property and eating all the wonderful insects and worms they can find.
Pretty sure you won’t find higher quality eggs ❤️ Please ping me for more info 😉

🥵 How hot is it? 🥵Soooooo hot that even our horse was suffering so we had to bath her in a nice cool shower and put out the industrial fan. The heat and humidity in Brisbane today is something I’ve not experienced in a very very long time 🥺

HillsEnd is where we call home and has been a dream of our family for many years. The home is surrounded by beautiful eucalypts, birds, native wildlife and the odd visiting dear. The name HillsEnd is an homage to the wonderful Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top Farm in the UK. Her love of farming, animals, naturalist endeavours and the beautiful images of her books inspire our work around the property, our drive to harvest our own produce and protect the land we are now custodians of. I dare say there are few people who didn't grow up reading her books or having them read to them as a child. For us, Beatrix’s world and work inspires a life of simplicity in being in constant contact with nature and a deep respect thereof.
HillsEnd was purchased in November 2019 and our garden has been growing slowly since then. Over time we plan to increase the number of garden beds, fruit trees and fowl on our small house plot. The majority of the land however will be left for the native fauna to enjoy, find a home in and increasing the number of native flora for them all to enjoy. Our plans for the future include going off-grid: establishing appropriate water storage, a grey water system and a solar farm amongst other environmental endeavours.
Our current menagerie includes:
5 Belgium D’uccles (Ethel and adoptees Laurell & Hardey and Abbot & Costello),
Ricky (Baker) a cute little adopted white rooster of unknown breed
2 Pekin Bantum chickens (Violet and Snowball)
a hive of Tetragonula Hockingsi native bees,
an Alexandrine who goes by the name of Banjo (Patterson)
a cute little white adopted Cockatiel by the name of Henry (Lawson),
William (Shakespeare) the Shetland,
Molly the adopted Hanoverian Warmblood mare,
2 adopted goats by the name of Daisy (the boy) & Billie (the girl) of unknown breed
2 sheep who go by Lavern & Shirley (Lavern is a Damara and Shirley is a Dorper)
6 heritage breed chickens and 2 roosters (who provide our eggs). Fredrick is the prime rooster and takes care of his girls while our newest member Einstein is still getting to know everyone. Our breeds are currently Plymouth Rock, Rhode Island Red, Wyandotte and Silkie.
We are also fortunate to enjoy a small herd of deer who visit quite regularly along with the usual locals such as snakes, bandicoots, frogs, birds and European bees.
We truely love our animals and love being able to help animals in need of a home. We are currently almost at capacity however, there’s alway room for one more :)
Our little garden is primarily driven by a desire to reduce our footprint on our precious planet. We don't use any commercial pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers. Our garden is lovingly tended, hand weeded and receives home grown compost and worm castings. Our stock predominantly comes from Eden seeds (or similar), gifts/cuttings from family and friends and seed saving from organic produce. We hope over time to locate amazing old varieties that grandma use to grow in her veggie garden so if you have any seeds/cuttings you’d like to share or swap, we would LOVE to hear from you!
Our home kitchen garden is a family passion and we each spend time trying to increase our knowledge about gardening and the growing of fruit and veggies from those who have spent the better part of a lifetime doing so. Thankfully we have the guidance from Aunty (ABC’s Gardening Australia) and dear friends and family who thankfully know far more than we do and are happy to share their knowledge with us.
Since moving here we have been working hard on our kitchen garden, fencing for the animals, growing our furry/fluffy family and thankfully we sometimes have excess produce which we share with others as we can through our page, our local community pages and the local Brookfield Food Swap mornings. When we do have excess produce, we will post on our wall so you can see what is available and when. If you’re interested, please let us know so we can have your fresh picked produce waiting for you!
In the mean time, please enjoy our page and all the goings on around the farm :)
