Mia saw at .acupuncturevet yesterday for an initial acupuncture and rehab consultation to address and manage her chronic hip and spinal pain.
A significant number of our patients with behavioural problems also have underlying pain or discomfort, contributing to their behaviour by increasing their irritability, anxiety, and frustration and lowering their emotional threshold at the same time.
When we see behavioural changes in our pets, we must also look for and address any physical concerns in order to improve their general well-being and emotional health. 🐾🐈‍⬛

Mia is turning 10 this year!
She is going strong and happy even with her heart, hip, and anxiety problems.
We often forget about the oldies and put their changes in behaviour to “old age”.
Many behavioural changes in our older patients can be a result of pain, discomfort, or cognitive decline. These problems can be managed efficiently to significantly improve the mental and physical well-being of our older fur babies (what an oxymoron).

We see adult and geriatric patients with changes in behaviour and suspected cognitive decline. Get in touch to find out more!

Dr Kersti Seksel said this many times in the past, and it really resonates with me - Dogs are our prisoners. They have no control over their lives. They cannot decide when they eat, sleep, or play. They cannot choose what to eat, where to live, or who to love. All they have is you.

As their caretakers, it is our responsibility to provide what they need to them - not just physically, like proper nutrition, a safe resting spot, or warmth. We also need to look after them mentally. Making animals feel safe, secure, calm, and loved is our goal. We will try our best to enrich their lives as much as we can to give them the best life they deserve as our "prisoners".

Meet the human behind BBV!🙋🏻‍♀️

Dr Karen graduated from the University of Queensland as a veterinarian in 2016. Having two anxious rescue dogs herself, her passion for becoming an advocate of animal mental health and welfare grew. While working in general practices, she enrolled in a postgraduate course in behavioural medicine through the University of Sydney’s Centre for Veterinary Education. She later became a Member of the ANZCVS (Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists) by examination in the Veterinary Behaviour Chapter.

She started BBV in 2021 with the goal to increase the awareness of mental health in pets and help families navigate the challenges of living with a pet with behavioural problems.

Karen is currently undertaking specialist training through the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine and, in a few years, will join the small number of registered specialists in Veterinary Behavioural Medicine in Australia.

Karen shares her home with her husband and two dogs, Rigby and Mia, as well as two cats and six fish.

Meet the team!

MIA, THE KELPIE X CATTLE DOG

Mia is the least loyal dog in the world—you could break into her home and she’d want to leave with you. She suffers from hip dysplasia, but since one’s been replaced with neat bionic parts , she is a much happier girl and loves to sit on the sofa and watch TV with her humans. As BBV's wellness officer, her role is to let the staff know when they need to take a break (to provide pats).

Meet the team!

RIGBY, THE BORDER COLLIE X KELPIE
Rigby’s life goals are to please his humans and eat (not in that order). His greatest fear is thunder and construction, and he thinks the sky is going to fall on him when the lightning hits. He is an elite nose work athlete, and the sniffing helps him calm his mind and think clearly. Rigby works in the logistics department at BBV, letting the staff know when deliveries arrive.

Both Mia and Rigby are crate-trained.
We use crates as a safe haven for our dogs, so they have somewhere to retreat to when they feel overwhelmed. We have one crate per room in our house!
has a great video showing how to crate train your dogs:

Backed by science, we use the most up-to-date behavioural plan and treatment to improve the lives of pets, and the relationship they have with their human.

Many behavioural problems in dogs and cats (people, too!) are due to fear, stress, anxiety and/or pain. These are typically medical issues—in the brain and body—not training or obedience problems. Don’t get us wrong, a well-trained pet can go a long way, but it doesn’t resolve the underlying cause of these behaviours. Aside from (or in addition to) anxiety and pain, there could be other underlying or concurrent physical conditions, so it’s best to have a veterinarian assess your fur-child to find the right way to a happier, healthier pet. That’s where we come in!

Mia & Rigby went on their first camping trip this weekend!

While they both had heaps of fun, it was pretty stressful for them, especially when the unexpected storm hit!

How well does your dog (or cat?!) cope with a sudden change of routine and overwhelming stimuli?
