Bai came to see us when her owners heard a fall, finding Bai suddenly falling over when she attempted to walk. On examination, she had a head tilt, repetitive uncontrolled eye movement (nystagmus) and was drooling.
The diagnosis? Idiopathic vestibular dysfunction, a condition predominately affecting senior dogs, with traditional veterinary treatments limited to supportive care. This disorder affects the system responsible for maintaining an animal's orientation in its environment, leading to:
โAtaxia & un-coordination
โPersistent circling & falls
โHead tilt
โNystagmus
โNausea
The intriguing part? Its similarity to BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) in humans. The anatomy of the vestibular apparatus is very similar and although the same phenomenon has not been investigated in dogs, it is speculated that the same pathology may occur and so the same treatment methods would apply.
Using techniques inspired by human BPPV treatments, we were able to successfully correct Baiโs vestibular dysfunction. We are terrible at getting โbeforeโ videos as it never feels appropriate at the time but after our initial treatment, the first video shows a marked improvement. Bai was affected on both sides and following the final correction, the second video reveals Bai, almost entirely her joyful self again.

Foot care is a crucial part of arthritis and injury prevention and management. The nails should not come into contact with the floor with the dog in a normal standing posture. If they do, their nails are too long!
Over-grown nails change the biomechanics of the foot leading to:
- Alter natural paw placement and range of motion of the digits.
- Undue strain on joints, especially in the paws and wrists, leading to arthritis and altered weight loading through the limb.
- Cause pain, discomfort (similar to getting around in shoes that are too small), and potential injury by slipping or getting caught in materials.
Follow this step by step guide to correct overgrown nails and strive for optimal paw health:
- Gradual Trimming: Quick successive trims over weeks help avoid cutting the quick (vascular supply) and encourage its regression.
- Trimming Strategy: Focus on removing more from the upper side of the nail, encouraging the quick to regress faster, allowing for shorter nails over time.
- Use the Right Tools: Ensure you have a quality nail clipper or electric file suitable for your pet's size.
- Identify the Quick: If your pet has light coloured nails, the quick appears pink. For dark nails, trim in small increments, looking for a chalky white ring with a black center.
- Trim Paw Fur: Trim back any fur extending over the paw pads which would otherwise contribute to slipping. Fine clippers (such as neck trimmers) or sharp scissors are ideal for the job.
- Consistent Schedule: After achieving the desired nail length, stick to a regular trimming routine to avoid overgrowth.
