This is always a controversial topic โผ๏ธ
Take your unvaccinated puppy outside ๐
Thinking about those off-leash beach adventures, neighbourhood walks, or relaxed cafรฉ visits with your dog down the track? ๐๏ธ๐ถโโ๏ธโ๏ธ
Your puppyโs future outings start with how you introduce them to the world NOW.
Meet Bubbles from @long.dog.squad
Sheโs safely enjoying the sights from the back of my car.
๐ค By pairing the view of dogs and people with tasty yoghurt on a LickiMat, Iโm helping her build positive associations.
๐ซ This gentle introduction prepares her for the exciting adventures to come.
But hereโs the controversial truth...
Keeping your puppy cooped up at home while theyโre learning about the world can backfire.
When you finally try to venture out with a 16-week-old pup, the overwhelming newness can lead to more challenges ๐๐ฐ
Donโt risk making socialisation harder later ๐ซ
Start gradually introducing your puppy to the sights, sounds, and experiences of the outside world now.
Itโs all about setting them up for a smoother, more enjoyable transition into their adult life.
๐ฉ Send this to a new puppy owner so they don't keep their puppy at home until they're fully vaccinated!
HERE'S THE THING ๐ซฃ
You could play fetch for over an hour. Standing at the park, tossing the ball back and forth.
Or you could go for a 10km walk...
AND your dog still comes home and is full of beans!
Exercise needs to be both MENTAL and physical.
If you're simply exercising your dog's body, their brain is still buzzing with energy ๐
HOW TO FIX THIS:
โ
๏ธ Ask your dog to do a different trick each time before you throw the ball. Sit, drop, spin! This keeps them thinking ๐ค
โ
๏ธ Go for a sniffy walk! Let your dog smell all the interesting things on the sidewalk to stimulate their mind ๐
โ
๏ธ Join Canine Hoopers! In this video, Skipper the border collie is having to THINK about where he is running and listen to his owner ๐

How can you trust your dog off leash? ๐
๐ Here's 3 ways to train reliable off leash control
ONE: DISTRACTIONS ON LEASH
The main reason you can't trust your dog off leash is because they get distracted by things ๐
This means your dog is too focussed on something else and can't respond when you call them.
I recommend using the @the_zhani_brand 3, 5 or 10 metre leashes.
Then you can safely practise calling your dog's name in interesting and distracting places, such as the park or the beach โฑ๏ธ
TWO: LEASH OFF = FUN STARTS
We don't want your dog to learn that the sound of their leash unclipping means they can run far away and ignore you...
Play this simple game in a fenced area:
- walk around with your dog on leash
- unclip the leash, and you RUN
- have 30 seconds of your dog playing and chasing you around
- give treats and clip the leash back on
- repeat!
THREE: JOIN CANINE HOOPERS
What's that? Hoopers is a fun, agility style obstacle course.
In this video, Rosie is running through 5 hoops off leash.
Rosie is perfectly focused on her owner, listens to her, and doesn't run away!
In these classes, I strategically guide you to teach your dog to listen on leash.
Then we can do small amounts of off leash time when we are 100% sure your dog is going to hang around ๐

Saffron and I attempted our first ever beginner level Hoopers course this afternoon ๐ She is testing my course designs for my Hoopers Level 1 class! This is 4 metre spacing and 12 hoops ๐
She's so fast and fun ๐ฅฐ Even as dog trainer, I used to be hesistant trusting Saffy off leash and Hoopers has given me so much confidence in her ability to focus and ignore distractions ๐
What if I told you that dog training classes are about the human end of the leash? ๐ค
Auditing is where you leave your dog at home and come to a dog training class by yourself to learn ๐ Then you go home to teach your dog. This is a great option for many dogs and owners.
Have a read about Emily and Nancy's experience auditing Canine Hoopers below โฌ๏ธ
"I learned so much in this fabulous foundations course! My adolescent dog is not quite ready to participate in group classes yet, so the opportunity to audit Hannah's Hoopers Foundations class was perfect for me.
I was able to focus on learning in class, without worrying if my dog's excitement level might be disruptive. Watching multiple dog-handler pairs participate in the exercises, and listening to Hannah's guidance for each, was so helpful. For my reference, I picked one dog-handler pair to video for each exercise, so I could watch and pay attention for the others. I also took notes of any additional instructions from Hannah.
Back at home with my own dog, it was easy to use my video and notes for each exercise to set up practice sessions for ourselves. I would record our sessions, and each week I compiled them into a short video montage to get feedback from Hannah. She always had helpful advice and was very encouraging.
I'm amazed at the progress we've made and am looking forward to our next Hoopers course with Hannah!" Emily Williams with Nancy Meatball

Don't train your puppy... UNTIL you have a management plan.
โก๏ธ Management comes BEFORE training
You could be the most committed owner ever and do multiple training sessions a day, BUT none of that will outweigh what your puppy is practising for the rest of the 24 hours.
If your puppy is weeing on the carpet, stealing things, jumping up at the kids, and biting your clothes - you're never going to have the well-behaved companion you dreamed of ๐
With puppies, it's our responsibility to control their environment so that they can make good choices!
Otherwise, we are setting puppies up to fail and practise undesirable behaviours.
โก๏ธ Your management plan might include a puppy pen, a crate, a baby gate, puppy proofing your home, and supervision ๐
This way, you've created a little area where it's most likely your puppy will behave in a way you like, such as lying down while the kids run around or toileting on their puppy pads.
๐ Send this to a new puppy owner to remind them of the importance of management!
Is your puppy chewing your furniture or stealing your socks? ๐คญ
This isn't a training issue...
โก๏ธ Management is a HUGE part of raising a puppy. We need to control the environment so your puppy is set up to make good decisions.
If you let your puppy have access to your whole house, you're setting them up to fail. Of course, they are going to chew or steal things you don't want them to have ๐
It's a normal developmental stage for puppies to explore the world with their mouth (they don't have hands ๐). They are likely to be teething as well. This is an uncomfortable process where they will want to soothe by chewing. I'm sure you'd rather they chew on a toy than your shoes ๐
While your dog is a baby, make sure you have a management plan โ
๏ธ This could include a puppy pen, a crate, baby gates, puppy proofing, and your supervision ๐
It's your job to teach your puppy how to fit into your lifestyle. With management, you are setting your puppy up to behave in a way you like!
If you're getting a puppy soon, share your management ideas with me in the comments ๐

Are you dreaming of beach trips where your dog can run free on the sand and play in the waves? โฑ๏ธ๐๐พ
Achieving off leash freedom and control can be easily taught with Canine Hoopers ๐
Canine Hoopers is an agility style sport where we teach your dog to navigate a course of obstacles, made up of barrels (shown in video), hoops, and tunnels.
Hoopers teaches your dog:
โ
๏ธ to look to you for directions
โ
๏ธ stay close when not wearing a leash
โ
๏ธ follow your verbal instructions
โ
๏ธ pay attention to your body language to determine where they should go
