๐Ÿƒ This species of leaf insect is very quiet during the day, but becomes active during the night. When they walk, they will walk in a stop-go kind of way, as if they are moved by the wind. These little guys are able to regrow limbs they may loose during their sheds, however are not able to regrow them once they have reached adulthood. Once they have reached adulthood, the males are able to fly, and they generally will do this often when disturbed. The females however cannot fly.

Native to the tropics of the Eastern Hemisphere, this species of leaf insect eats blackberries, rose and oak leaves. ๐ŸŒท

Commonly known as the tent spider or dome-web spider, this beautiful little spider is part of the orb-weaver family. This spider is native to India, Japan, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Fiji, and Tonga. It is often found in disturbed or open habitats from coasts to forest and mountainous interiors.

Webs built by Cyrtophora species are different from typical webs built by orb-weavers. The orb web is built horizontally with a finely meshed dome or bowl shape, hence the name โ€œdome-web spiderโ€. The non-sticky spiral is left intact and webs are without a sticky spiral. A 1980 study suggests that this type of web derives from the typical orb web and not the other way around. These webs are durable, sometimes lasting several weeks, so they donโ€™t need to be remade every day like the webs of most spiders.

Webs can be either solitary or colonial, though even in groups, each web is defended by its owner. Colonial groups can cover an area of fifteen meters squared and include over four hundred individuals, including fifty adults. Young spiders will often build their nests within the space of that of their parentโ€™s.

Named after itโ€™s praying pose when awaiting prey, this creature is not a predator that you would want to cross your path. With lighting speed reflexes and extreme lethal precision, these insects are deadly hunters. Feeding on whatever prey may come within reach, they are ambitious with larger species known to eat lizards, frogs and even some small birds.

It is also known that female praying mantids do cannibalise their sexual counter partners, and has been known to behead her male counterpart before consummation. Believe it or not, a male mantid is actually a better lover when his brain, is detached from his abdominal ganglion, which controls the actual act of copulation. Cannibalism is variable across the different mantid species, with estimates ranging from about 46% of all sexual encounters to none at all.

There are approximately 2,000 species of mantids that have been discovered to date, with almost all of these species residing in tropical areas.

A unique feature about these alien like insects is the ability to turn their heads 180 degrees. Mantids have a flexible joint between the head and prothorax that enables them to swivel their heads to this degree, and are the only insects in the world with this capability.

Itโ€™s believes that Mantids, termites and cockroaches all descended from a common ancestor, with some entomologists grouping them in a superorder (Dictyoptera), due to their close evolutionary relationships.

Living on all continents (excluding Antarctica), Cicadas have adapted to survive in near all environments. Although their swarms are often confused or associated with locusts, they are not apart of this family. Cicadas hail from the taxonomic order Hemiptera (true bugs), and locusts belong to the order Orthoptera with grasshoppers.

Although itโ€™s still unclear, experts estimate that there are billions of cicadas in a single brood (All periodical cicadas of the same life cycle type that emerge in a given year are known collectively as a single โ€œbroodโ€).

Cicadas synchronised emergence is a deliberate survival strategy known โ€œpredator satiationโ€. This is when an animal occurs at such a high-density population, predators quickly become full and satisfied, therefore increasing the chances of survival for a large percentage of young.

Itโ€™s no surprise they can emerge in such great numbers, with the female cicada being able to lay between 400 - 600 eggs in the few short weeks she spends above ground.

With over 3,000 species, Cicadas have to be one of the most fascinating insects. All species are generally grouped into two categories: annual cicadas, which emerge every year, or, periodical cicadas, which spend majority of their lives underground and only emerge once every decade or two.

The exact moment when cicadas emerge in masse is actually calculated. It happens only when the ground (Approx eight inches below the surface) reaches 17 degrees celsius (not one degree higher or lower).

When this temperature is reached, the nymphs will begin their upward journey. Usually occurring soon after sunset, they emerge and will climb to higher points in the surrounding trees. This phenomenon has been known to can place over several evenings.

The infamous Atlas Moth ๐Ÿ

With a wingspan of up to 12 inches and a total surface area of as much as 62 square inches, it considered one of the largest moths in the world. It is second only to the White Witch Moth in wingspan and the Hercules Moth in total wing surface area.

Adult Atlas Moths are not capable of eating as they donโ€™t have fully formed mouths. Though it seems extraordinary, this is fairly common in moths. They live on the reserves they store as caterpillars. Once the atlas moth emerges from the cocoon as an adult, its sole purpose is to reproduce. These moths donโ€™t travel far from their cocoon, saving all of its energy for reproduction.

As they are born with without the ability to eat, the moths only live for about two weeks, leaving them with only enough time to mate and lay their eggs. Due to this, these gentle giants preserve their energy by remaining as still as possible in their race against time.

15/02/2024

Known as one of the largest moth species in the world, the Atlas Moths have a massive wingspan that is wider than a human hand. These Moths have some of the most well developed defensive systems, from spraying itโ€™s predators as a caterpillar to its wingtips that look just like cobra snake heads.

When the atlas moth is threatened, it slowly moves its wings to mimic a snake to ward off potential attackers. Since cobras are found in the same areas as the atlas moth, and because its main predators are birds and lizards, these visual deterrents were likely adapted for a means of survival.

If the snake markings are not sufficient to keep predators at bay, the atlas moth also has the appearance of false eyes on its wings. These eyes can startle predators, but also distract them from more vulnerable parts of the mothโ€™s body, possibly sparing it from death if attacked.

The Water Scorpion - AKA โ€œThe Toe Biterโ€

The water scorpion is not a true scorpion, but it certainly looks like one! An underwater predator, it uses its front pincer-like legs to catch its prey. Its tail actually acts as a kind of โ€˜snorkelโ€™, rather than a sting, so it can breathe in the water.

Ever heard of the โ€œToe Biterโ€?
No itโ€™s not some creepy guy nibbling on your toes at night while you sleep, but a little bug friend! This little guy gets his name from biting peoples toes in mistake for prey, you would know him better as, the water scorpion.

An underwater predator, the water scorpion hides among dead leaves where it waits to ambush its prey (such as tadpoles, small fish, and toes) with its grabbing pincer-like legs. It is known to bite, but its not very painful for humans. It lives in still-water ponds and lakes, and is common around the shallow edges of garden ponds. It is not a true scorpion and is a poor swimmer, preferring to move by walking.

So next time you see a body of water, go for a little investigation and letโ€™s see if you can spot one of these cuties! (Tag us if you do) ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿฆ‚๐Ÿ’ง
