Every horse ( no matter the age or size) requires a minimum of a yearly dental examination. Younger and older horses sometimes require twice yearly dentals. A thorough dental exam is done to examine dentition and determine further treatment such as taking down sharp points and identifying other dental pathologies that affect your horses health.
This sweet foal presented to our hospital for “dummy foal syndrome” also know as neonatal maladjustment syndrome or neonatal encephalopathy. An episode of oxygen deprivation and/or systemic inflammation during the perinatal period, meaning before, during or shortly after foaling, causes this syndrome.
Signs of a dummy foal are variable and depend on the degree and duration of inflammation and oxygen deprivation suffered. They include an inability to locate the udder and nurse (i.e., “forgetting” how to nurse), aimless wandering, head‐pressing, weakness, loss of coordination, hyper‐sensitivity to sounds or touch, depression, chewing or licking stall walls and other changes in demeanor.
Early treatment can include administration of intravenous fluids to maintain perfusion, broad‐ spectrum antibiotics, intranasal oxygen and medical control of seizures. Providing nutrition through bottle or nasogastric tube feedings as well as an abundance of tender loving care are also very important components of treating these foals.
Studies show that up to 80% of foals affected with dummy foal syndrome, even severe cases, make full recoveries and mature into normal adults with careers as high‐performing athletes. Remaining vigilant and watchful for the above predisposing conditions and involving your veterinarian quickly to initiate early diagnosis and therapy will greatly increase your foal’s chance of making a full recovery.

Kemoka!
Meet Kemoka! After spending several weeks in the hospital as a foal, he has returned home and continued to thrive! It was great to catch up with him and his owner when he came into clinic for a visit.
Lameness is the main cause of poor performance in the equine athlete. We are fortunate to have the Equinosis Q also known as the Lameness Locator available at the clinic to objectively measure lameness. The Equinosis Q is able to objectively quantify lameness and is 10x more accurate than the human eye.
