Pet care is more than just providing food, water and enrichment. Regular vet checkups are an integral part of caring for your furry friend and can help prevent, detect, and manage potential health problems.
Our CEO Bella attended her routine senior vet check with Dr Jo at Ripley Veterinary Hospital, where her amazing vets informed us of a heart murmur and advised to get an echo done for a thorough assessment. We quickly scheduled Bella in for an appointment with their visiting specialist Dr Geoff from Veterinary Cardiac Services Australia who performed an echocardiogram to assess miss Bella’s heart. Thankfully it was good news with a positive outcome. Make sure to schedule routine visits with your veterinarian to keep your pet happy and healthy for years to come.

A 4 month old kitten was presented for evaluation of an incidentally detected heart murmur, no clinical signs reported. On echo a complete atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD) was diagnosed (also known as an endocardial cushion or atrioventricular canal defect). AVSD's lack the true atrioventricular septum, which is the small portion of the septum that separates the left ventricle from the right atrium resulting from the normal staggering of the mitral and tricuspid valve annuli. However AVSD's are usually much larger involving portions of the atrial and/or ventricular septa. A complete AVSD includes a septum primum atrial septal defect and a high ventricular septal defect. There is also a common AV valve (comprised of 5 leaflets) that bridges the interventricular septum and is frequently incompetent with regurgitation into both atria. The pathophysiologic consequence of the above is massive left to right shunting causing generalised volume overload of all four cardiac chambers. Right ventricular and left ventricular systolic pressures equalise due to the large communication between these chambers. The pulmonary hypertension present as a result is initially due to massive pulmonary blood flow. However pulmonary artery pathology may develop overtime resulting in right to left shunting if pulmonary vascular resistance increases to the point that it exceeds systemic vascular resistance (Eisenmenger's syndrome).
