Dogs and their noses doing cool things in science and medicine.

Our project to train dogs to detect the odour of was the first time researchers combined three approaches – dog’s noses, AI-assisted chemical analysis of the volatile organic compounds VOCs in urine samples, and microbial analysis of urine samples of men undergoing biopsy for suspected prostate cancer.

The dogs’ noses were 71% sensitive and 73% specific when detecting Gleason 9 prostate cancer, the most aggressive kind. The dogs also correctly identified when 73% of patient samples did not have the disease.

While it tailored towards nosework environments, the skills taught can also support your dog in everyday life. Small classes, with support videos and handouts.

The focus will not be on searching or search skills, so only basic skills on birch are required.

Trial Skills for Spicy Sniffers

This is a 4 week specialised masterclass course for sensitive, nervous, anxious and reactive dogs (spicy dogs) who trial or wish to trial, to develop management and coping skills in a trial environment, but outside of the official search areas. This includes dogs who may find environments, people, dogs or a combination of any of those challenging.

The only prerequisite is that your dog needs to be sound on Birch. Search skill level is not important, as searching is NOT the focus for this course and any searches set will not be complex.

It's to be noted that working on these skills may have a flow on effect to how effectively your spicy dog copes/adjusts in search areas, making for quicker more efficient searching.

Very small classes of 4 dogs, you and your dog will work on a couple of key skills each week, bringing it all together to practise these skills in a class/mock trial environment to build confidence for moving in and around areas with other dogs.

As part of the course you will also have access to support and information handouts, videos demos of the exercises and given your own foot target pad to keep. We also can offer optional bolt on support, giving you extra help outside of the course via phone/email/online or in person.

If you have a spicy dog, these exercises and skills will also help you in every day life. Whilst they are modified and tailored with trial/class environments in mind, they are not limited to just that use. So if you have a spicy dog in general, would highly recommend this as some extra support.

Learning with a spicy dog is not quick or linear, they have their own timeline of what they can manage at what pace, but to get the most from this course its important you do dedicate time outside of your classes to get best results.

We will initially be offering this course at Chermside West in the coming weeks, but may be able to extend to offer it at Burpengary or Hemmant/Tingalpa in the coming months. Please send an email to [email protected] if you are keen to book the course or be added to our contact list.
