Under the Microscope - Feather Mites.
Feather mites are something that we see daily here at Brisbane Bird Vet. These mites live on the feathers and they do not feed on your bird. It is normal for your bird to have a small number of mites but a healthy bird will keep these numbers low with regular grooming. When these numbers build up and feather mites are noticed it is usually a sign of other underlying disease causing a reduction in grooming behavior rather than the mites themselves causing an issue. They can often be seen as extremely small black dots on the rachis of the flight feathers. If you do notice a build up of these mites then we highly recommend taking your bird for a veterinary examination with an avian vet rather than just treating the mites directly as they are often a sign of a more serious health issue at play.
