Following a spate of calls regarding pet dogs and exposure to a bat. Could I ask you all to share this post around? I get calls from all over South East Queensland - from as far north as Gympie, from people concerned about their pet after a bat exposure. I wrote the article below nearly 7 years ago but it is still accurate. Kalinga Park Veterinary Surgery and Dr Ben Charlton is one of the very few clinics that maintain a critical stock of Rabies Vaccines that can be used with approval as a post-exposure treatment for Australian Bat LyssaVirus (colloquially Bat Rabies). The attached page has lots of info about the disease and risk and has a form people can fill out when exposure has occurred.
Lyssavirus has caused two human deaths. It is spread by scraching or biting from bats to other mammals. Early treatment is required.
