I've been inflicted with a flu this week and haven't had the energy to do much with my dogs... but scent work activities certain help to give them some much needed mental stimulation (and in Fizz's case physical as well). Fizz is working on locating a little metal spacer by scent and then offering a down when she finds it, as you can see she enjoys this alot and is quite good at finding it!

We love scent work as an outlet for dogs and especially love it for when the weather isn't great for dog training outdoors or when the human isn't feeling awesome!

Tic Tac caught up with us today to continue her training program. She gets REALLY excited around other dogs! Our trusty old girl Blink came out to help her learn all about calm and impulse control and she did so well controlling herself!

This applies so much to our dogs! When things get hard for our dogs they can only perform to the level of their training.

Ask yourself:
🤔 Is your dog is prepared for a given situation?
🤔 Have they rehearsed the desired behaviour under pressure enough times to make it reliable?
🤔 How much practice has the dog had in the desired behaviour?

Remember that Repetition builds behaviour!

We have a brag! Zip and I competed in Obedience for the first time over the weekend and had a great time! We won the first competition with 96/100 points and came forth in the second competition with 88/100. Both are passes towards our CCD (Community Companion Dog) title, we need one more pass to finish this title and move to the next level!

There's nothing like watching 10 dogs casually doing loose lead walking work together. 😍

Can you believe that nearly every one of these dogs originally came to see us with some form of reactivity?

Shout out to Scout and his person who gained their Nose Work 1 title on the weekend! They graduated from our Intro to Scent Work class last year and loved it so much that they continued training and went on to competing! We're very proud of them! Give them some love!

Zip and I are preparing for our first competitions so we've been working on duration in her heeling. This is a recent session and it's starting to look really nice! We also work on turns and positions but in this session we were just looking at doing a longer session of pure heeling.

I'm looking forward to getting this girl in the competition ring!

Welcome Dougie! He started training this week to work on his impulse control around bikes and other dogs and help him feel more comfortable with strangers!

So, what's the first thing we do with a dog like this?

PLAY!!!

By satisfying prey drive and providing awesome outlets in games we can provide mental and physical stimulation, teach impulse control and provide an outlet to replace chasing things he shouldn't be chasing (like bikes!).

Do you think he enjoyed it??

Being calm around activity is a struggle for Vader who has been with us for a few weeks now. We use place alot to help dogs learn to regulate their emotions and focus on staying calm. He's doing really well with his impulse control!

This is Rocco. He's a 9 month old GSP mix who started training with us a few months ago to ensure he and his owners got through the puppy phase without any bad habits! He joined group class about 5-6 weeks ago and we just love his bouncy, prancy heel! 😍

When we first met him, dogs were a big deal for Rocco! He would get SOOOO excited that he'd stop listening to his people, pull towards and bark at the other dog - even when it was a long way away!

His owners have been super dedicated to his training and report that now he can walk past other dogs on the footpath calmly and easily just like he's doing here in our Life Skills class!

He's a beautiful example of how you can train a young dog (remember he's only 9 months old!) to be well behaved!

Your puppy's age is no excuse for lack of training or manners!

30/05/2024

Welcome Bear. He's a young German Shepherd with big feelings about strangers. We'll be helping him learn to control those feelings so he can be safe and able to go out into the real world to do fun things like going for a walk!

He's a serious dog and we have a bit of work ahead of us but he showed a lot of potential in his first lesson this week.

Please give his people some encouragement and keep your judgements to yourself! No one sets out to create dogs like this intentionally, it happens accidentally through a mixture of socialisation, exposure, training and genetics.

Group classes are a great way to practice your dog's life skills around other dogs. Our training programs all progress from private sessions to group sessions so your dog can first learn what to do and how to do it and then come practice with more distractions in group training!

Vader our current board and train dog joined in as well!

The new training shed is being built this week! How awesome will all weather indoor training be? No more cancelled classes or rained out lessons!!

27/05/2024

We only had a small group on Saturday for our Life Skills class so we were able to fit in our little training space while it rained! The new shed goes up this week and we'll be able to run classes and lessons in all weather!

We challenged our class students with impulse control while another dog played which was hard for all of them but all did so well!

Here's a typical puppy socialisation session with us. This is not what most people think socialisation looks like and here's why!

Puppy owners often confuse socialisation with play. But they are not the same thing! Play can be part of socialisation but it's not all of it! Socialisation is about teaching your puppy how they should feel, think and act with various things like other dogs, people, cats, cars etc. If you teach your puppy that play is all they should want/think about when they see another dog they will grow up to have trouble being calm around other dogs.

Gracie the Kelpie pup went to puppy school and was a little overwhelmed by other dogs at first (not good) but has still developed a lot of excitement around dogs (also not ideal). Her behaviour will be completely inappropriate when she's older so it's our job to teach her better manners now!

Blink our lovely old girl is amazing at educating puppies... so we put her to work! See how she mostly ignores Gracie but when Gracie gets too intense Blink gives her a quick correction which teaches Gracie where Blink's boundaries are. Blink is teaching Gracie how to do calm "dog" things around other dogs rather than turn every interaction into crazy play and in just a few minutes we watched Gracie calm down and follow Blink's lead!

If you need help with puppy training get in touch!

Arya the German Shepherd struggles when other dogs are running, moving quickly and making noise. While Vader the Malinois on the slatmill struggles with FOMO when I handle or engage with another dog. So this session was super cool to address both of these issues with these dogs!

Sometimes you need to think outside of the box when training dogs!

We volunteer our time with an assistance dog organisation called Young Diggers. Each week I run a couple of classes for their teams to help them further their training, iron out issues and teach advanced skills or obedience. Here's one of my classes working on stays together.

If you see an assistance dog in public please give them space and don't try to distract or engage with the dog! They are working and need to concentrate on their person!
