Heavy rainfall is likely to continue to impact South East Queensland and the Darling Downs today, following intense falls overnight. More than 150mm has been recorded at Greenbank since yesterday morning.

With catchments already saturated, localised flooding has been observed and may impact roads for your morning commute.

Please stay safe and ensure you monitor the latest warnings from the Bureau of Meteorology.

INFORMATION CURRENT AS AT:
1:00pm 23/01/2024

While we’re all keeping a close eye on what’s happening in north Queensland, there are early indications a significant and widespread rain and flood event could develop across central, southern and south-east Queensland later this week and could potentially extend into early next week.

Severe weather is part of life in Queensland, and we’ve seen a lot of it recently. The ground is wet and many dams are at capacity. Flooding events can impact all parts of life, so take the time to Get Ready now.

If you live in an area prone to flooding, start planning for what you might need to move or raise, and where you will go if you need to evacuate. Remember it’s always safest to leave early.

Gather important items, identification and documentation, so you’re not caught out in a rush. Store them in a waterproof wallet so they’re ready to grab if you need to leave.

Even if your home is in an area not usually impacted by flooding, local shops, roads and utilities might be, so it’s still important to plan ahead to be self-sufficient for at least three days – more if you live in regional or isolated areas. Check and top up your emergency kits. You can find a list of items here: www.getready.qld.gov.au/emergencykit

Recent events have seen areas of Queensland flooding that haven’t flooded previously. Flash flooding is dangerous and can happen anywhere. Start making back-up plans for work and school travel.

We know that flooding can bring up traumatic and difficult memories for many people so please continue to look out for yourselves and each other.

Happy New Year from our SES family to you & your families.

Our SES members have been working around the clock to respond to storm and flooding incidents across South-East Queensland. It’s crucial for everyone in affected areas to continue monitoring conditions and pay attention to warnings.
🚷 Stay Clear of Waterways: Keep away from creeks and storm drains. Floodwaters can be deceptive and dangerous.
🚫🚴‍♀️🚗 Avoid Floodwaters: If it's flooded - Forget it!! Don’t walk, ride, or drive through flood water. It's deeper and faster-moving than it appears.
🚗 Please take extra care when driving **Reduce Your Speed** Slow down to ensure you have better control of your vehicle on wet and slippery roads.
🆘 Flash Flooding Safety: If trapped by flash flooding, find the highest point possible and call 000 for rescue if needed.
🔌 Electrical Safety: Unplug computers and appliances to prevent electrical hazards & damage.
📞 Phone Use During Storms: Limit phone use during the storm to avoid potential lightning risks.
☎️ For emergency assistance during and please call 132 500
📞 For life threatening emergencies, always call 000.

Need a reason to steer clear of floodwaters? Here is a good one!

One of our Fire and Rescue Service swiftwater crews snapped this crocodile lurking at a park in Ingham this morning.

It just goes to show there is no way to predict what’s hiding under the surface, so please don’t risk your life or the lives of our crews by entering floodwaters.

No doubt you've heard that Tropical Cyclone Jasper is currently sitting off the Qld coast.
DON'T PANIC!
You've got this week and the weekend to prepare. Yes, you can actually do some of the preparation work yourself. Use the time to clean your yards & gutters, secure any loose outdoor furniture, including that trampoline!
Fill your gas bottles. And check on your neighbours.
Qld only has approx. 5000 volunteers. We can't be everywhere all of the time.
Prepare and pack an emergency kit (ideally enough for 3 days), including medications for your family & pets and store it safe in case the weather turns bad. Check out this suggested plan: https://www.getready.qld.gov.au/check-out-what-you-need
Follow local social media and listen to your local radio for updates. Also check out the Brisbane City Council dashboard for what's happening in your area: https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/community-and-safety/community-safety/disasters-and-emergencies/emergency-dashboard

Having an emergency survival kit is the second step to prepare for an evacuation or emergency. Find out what to include in your emergency kit now.

Queensland, it’s time to pay attention.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting the likelihood of severe storms in the Darling Downs, Lockyer Valley and Scenic Rim this afternoon, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain and large hail.
The Bureau says some of these storms have the potential to be very dangerous.
Severe thunderstorms are also possible across a large section of the state covering the rest of SEQ and Central Qld, so keep an eye on the forecast and the radar as the day progresses.

Here’s what you can do BEFORE your home is hit with wild weather:

🏏 Bring in any loose outdoor items
🚗 Move cars under cover and away from trees
🎒 Ensure your emergency kit is stocked with essentials
📋 Create a backup plan to avoid unnecessary travel
