Planning a breeding to two horses takes a lot of planning if done right. At Eatons Hill Stud, we take many factors into consideration. We look at the strength and weaknesses of the sire and dam and the two generations behind them closely. We look back six generations in total. We look at the rideability of these lines. The temperament and what did these horses achieve. There is no perfect horse, even at Olympic level. Then there is the colour genetics which I’m thankful people like Kathy Lyons. So many of our local and USA friends in the Morgan horse family that have educated me on colour and the subfamilies. I love combining the Lippitt, western working and government lines. This year we have careful crafted two foals with the help of Happenstance Morgan Farm and Caroline Tarr. Without their help this year, breeding would not have been possible for that I am truly grateful. Below are Haymeron Park Peridote (Dec) x Warrabel Aquila. Photos to be released soon of their foal.

Farm life challenges!! Tuesday crisis comes as a domino effect from yesterday’s challenge. Yesterday we had a calf fall down the embankment of the river. Mum number 119 was so upset during the rescue attempt and that she couldn’t reach her calf that she went to her mother cow 5 for comfort. What do cows do for comfort you ask? They suck their mothers teats. Now the problem with this is cow 5 was only a day off from calving. So cow 119 sucked her dry and drank all her colostrum. This made Cow 5 engorged with milk but no colostrum. Today cow 5 gave birth to a little heifer. This little girl had no colostrum from her mother. This made her weak. Quick call out to local dairy to buy some colostrum. We are hoping after a couple of feeds she will be strong enough to drink from her Mum.
