Sad to share that our friends at Plant Empire are closing down. They used to be our neighbours when we were at Yeerongpilly. Highly recommend you go and check out their closing down sales 💕

This is one of those posts that start by saying how difficult the last few years have been for small businesses like ours.

Plant Empire started in 2019 with a vision to create a platform with pathways to help develop small creative businesses working with nature. And I think we’ve done that: in five years, we’ve helped over a thousand small businesses to share their work with the world. We’ve shared tens of thousands of plants and artworks, hosted 444 workshops, 30 exhibitions, 21 markets, 10 concerts, lots of parties and, just recently, 1 wedding!

Starting a business at the worst time in history is not without its problems. As some of you will know, we have faced a number of challenges in our current location which I was hoping to solve by purchasing a property for the business, but the right one has not come along for this strange little hybrid business, so it’s time to acknowledge that this search can’t go on indefinitely.

Thank you to our many customers who have helped to make Plant Empire a success. And to our employees, both past and present: none of this would have been possible without you, so thank you for your support.

I can’t end without giving thanks to the many wonderful artists that we’ve partnered with over the last five years. There are too many to list, but Mandy Brooks, Fiona Haynes and Jane du Rand have shared many of the highs and lows, as has Bronwen Jones, Fran Melton, Juliet van Oirschot, Barbara Radcliffe, Jackie Rufus, Shelley McDonald, Alice Wollenweber, May Smith and Nicole de la Mar. There are more. Walking with you on this journey has been a privilege.

So even though it’s been difficult, it’s also been great and I would do it all again. And maybe one day I just might.

Our last day of trading will be 30 June, with massive discounts in the plant shop and some art until then. There’s a lot of gear to move out after that so if there are any items that you’ve had your eye on, please don’t be backward in making an offer! Workshops until 13 July will go ahead as planned, and we have processed refunds today for the few that extend beyond this date.

Meet a couple of the Island dogs I have been working with 🐶

Meet Lulu from Russell and Dom from Macleay! How cute are these doggos. They are very lucky to have the lovely and committed doggo parents they do.

Dom I met for the first time last week to work on his fear of other dogs and Lulu and I have been working together for a few weeks now as she is a typical bull Arab that has too much love of life and forgets her manners when she gets excited.

Doggy water sports 🚣 This was Shimmy's first Kayaking experience. We both enjoyed it so much! She was super easy to introduce to this, only had to ask her to get on it on land (she already knew an "up" cue that I had used and taught with many other items like a gym step and skateboard) and then she was ready to go as she loves water. She was however a bit of a challenge when we saw those buoys in the water as she thought they were big balls and wanted to dive off and collect. Giving your dog choice and control for vet care and grooming ❤️‍🩹 Today Shimmy and I went to see the wonderful Dr Rich The Vet Collective and she gave consent for her vaccination needle without any sedation (this is just how relaxed she was). For those that know Shimmy's story you would know how big a deal this is. Shimmy was very vet and handling phobic. Even at home, if I tried to look at a part of her body that was sore she would lunge at me across the room and muzzle punch my face. So I taught her a "start cue" which for Shimmy is laying on her side. This is her way of indicating that she is comfortable and okay with what we were doing. As you can see in this video she looks up at Dr Rich at some point, which is her way of saying "I am not sure and removing consent" at this point Dr Rich stops and waits for her to relax and give consent again by laying down to continue with the vaccination. Working on Zoe's dog reactivity 🐕 Shimmy is helping Zoe the German Shepherd to desensitise to other dogs and be calm and focused on her owner when on a leash.
