Weekly Tips & Tricks | Storm Fear & Phobia

What an awful week it has been for storms, so many doggos are struggling with the storms. We specialise in treating fear, anxiety and reactivity and can help you treat storm phobia and other noise sensitivities.

Here are my top tips:
- You can't reinforce fear. Do comfort your dog and make them as comfortable as possible.
- Prepare some tasty enrichment to last the storm duration e.g. kongs, lickimats and chews.
- Close up the windows, doors and blinds.
- Play some white noise or put on a noisey industrial fan.

If these tips don't relax your dog or they can't eat during a storm then you really need professional help.

Weekly Tips & Trick | Preventing Aggression

With the recent dog attacks in the media, I have had an increase in clients wanting help with their dog that is displaying aggression. Which is great as most serious incidents can be prevented by getting help early from a professional trainer with a speciality in behaviour.

Here are my top tips:
- Never punish any behaviour. This has been scientifically proven to increase anxiety and aggression.
- Give them space when they are uncomfortable and avoid the triggers for aggression.
- Become an expert in reading dog body language so that you can recognise early signs of discomfort. Most dogs will "whisper" before they "yell".
- Seek professional help as early as possible and check they are certified by the Pet Professional Guild Australia.

Weekly Tips & Trick | Jumping on people

This week I share three tips to help if your dog jumps on you and your visitors.

Here are my top tips:
- Ask your visitor to text when they are 5 minutes away so you and your dog can be prepared.
- Give them some tasty food based enrichment just before they arrive e.g. kong, lickimat or chew.
- When you or your visitor come into the space with your dog, have treats in your hands at their head height ready so they are reinforced for four paws on the ground and to prevent jumping.

We are always here to help you and your doggo.

Weekly Tips & Trick | Barking at Dogs

This week I share three tips to help if your dog barks at other dogs whilst walking. This is one of the most common behavioural problems that I see on a daily basis. It often needs to be assessed and an individual approach developed to ensure your training is effective and not harmful but there are some things you can do at home.

Here are my top tips:
- Always start by asking, why does my dog bark at other dogs. There are many driving emotions e.g. is it fear based or is it frustration based. This is not a simple thing to identify but should guide your techniques at all times.
- Don't use any punishment or equipment that may cause discomfort or aim at "stopping" the behaviour. You need to focus on fixing that driving emotion.
- If in doubt as to what to do, distract them or avoid dogs till you can get professional help. Take some tasty treats with you e.g. roast chicken. Use those treats to distract your dog prior to them noticing the dog.

We are always here to help you and your doggo.

Sad to share that our friends at Plant Empire are closing down. They used to be our neighbours when we were at Yeerongpilly. Highly recommend you go and check out their closing down sales 💕

This is one of those posts that start by saying how difficult the last few years have been for small businesses like ours.

Plant Empire started in 2019 with a vision to create a platform with pathways to help develop small creative businesses working with nature. And I think we’ve done that: in five years, we’ve helped over a thousand small businesses to share their work with the world. We’ve shared tens of thousands of plants and artworks, hosted 444 workshops, 30 exhibitions, 21 markets, 10 concerts, lots of parties and, just recently, 1 wedding!

Starting a business at the worst time in history is not without its problems. As some of you will know, we have faced a number of challenges in our current location which I was hoping to solve by purchasing a property for the business, but the right one has not come along for this strange little hybrid business, so it’s time to acknowledge that this search can’t go on indefinitely.

Thank you to our many customers who have helped to make Plant Empire a success. And to our employees, both past and present: none of this would have been possible without you, so thank you for your support.

I can’t end without giving thanks to the many wonderful artists that we’ve partnered with over the last five years. There are too many to list, but Mandy Brooks, Fiona Haynes and Jane du Rand have shared many of the highs and lows, as has Bronwen Jones, Fran Melton, Juliet van Oirschot, Barbara Radcliffe, Jackie Rufus, Shelley McDonald, Alice Wollenweber, May Smith and Nicole de la Mar. There are more. Walking with you on this journey has been a privilege.

So even though it’s been difficult, it’s also been great and I would do it all again. And maybe one day I just might.

Our last day of trading will be 30 June, with massive discounts in the plant shop and some art until then. There’s a lot of gear to move out after that so if there are any items that you’ve had your eye on, please don’t be backward in making an offer! Workshops until 13 July will go ahead as planned, and we have processed refunds today for the few that extend beyond this date.

Thanks for your support, Brisbane!
