Happy 1st Barkday to Flash 🫶🏼🐾

Yesterday was Flash’s 1st Barkday & he celebrated with us while he is boarding 🫶🏼

Our staff yesterday grabbed some snaps (however the social media ladies did have the day off). He did get a little spoilt with some extra dinner & treaties (to get him to sit nicely & smile for the camera)

He has been getting lots of extra loving over the last couple of days & we have given him a big cuddle & kiss from his pawrents!

As we gear up for New Years celebrations, it is important to consider how you might protect your pup from Fireworks. Fireworks can be a frightening experience for many dogs and so it is important to take steps to keep our dogs calm and safe.

To start, it's essential to create a quiet and safe space for your dog indoors, away from the noise. Close windows, curtains, and doors to block out the sound and light. You can also use calming music or a white noise machine to drown out the fireworks. Some dogs benefit from a snug-fitting calming vest or wrap, which can help reduce anxiety by applying gentle pressure.

Make sure your dog’s identification is up to date, in case they panic and run off. It’s a good idea to keep them inside during fireworks displays, and never leave them unattended outside. If your dog experiences severe anxiety, consult your vet about potential calming products or medications that may help.

Your dog’s comfort and safety should always come first—taking a few simple precautions can help them feel secure during this noisy time of year.

Happy 1st Barkday to Nina 😍🥰

Nina is currently boarding with us (& her brother of course) & we are lucky enough to get to celebrate her very first Barkday 🫶🏼

Nina & Archie’s pawrents were kind enough to bring along some baked cookies to celebrate with all her sleepover friends (trust us when we say she has lots & has been loving running around with everyone)

Nina’s days have included lots of outdoor play at the park - getting muddy of course, wrestling with all her friends & her big bro! She also got extra cuddles & attention (more than already normal for this little sweetie) today!

Some more facts about Kennel Cough!

We have had a few customers call & ask how Kennel Cough gets spread so easily & quickly..

Firstly, it is like a common cold for humans! Although dogs get vaccinated annually against Kennel Cough, it is constantly evolving & new strains are always coming about. Dogs are vaccinated against the harsher strains that can lead to emergency hospitalisation.

Secondly, dogs will have Kennel Cough for anywhere between 5-7 days BEFORE showing symptoms. They can be carrying the virus around & seem completely themselves before symptoms actually show. This makes it super difficult to control as dogs will already have Kennel Cough & be contagious before we notice.

Lastly, Kennel Cough is highly contagious & can be picked up from just sharing the same water bowl! Dogs sniffing each other through the fence can spread it, same water bowl at the park & humans can carry it on their clothes & shoes if they have been around other dogs! (Our staff often end up taking it home on their clothes & spreading it to their own dogs)

We do our very best to ensure we clean thoroughly with F10, a veterinary disinfectant that helps stop the spread of common diseases. We also ensure that dogs that show the smallest of symptoms are removed from the environment & owners called to pick them up & we monitor all other dogs in the areas.

We hope that this helps clear up some common questions around Kennel Cough!

ATTENTION:

Unfortunately, we have had numerous reports of Kennel Cough.

Although we vaccinate every year, your dog can still contract mild strains of kennel cough.

Kennel cough can last from a day to several weeks, but it has the potential to progress into a serious and life-threatening condition if pneumonia and chronic bronchitis develop.

Signs of kennel cough to be aware of are:
🐾 Persistent dry, hacking cough
🐾 Eye and nasal discharge
🐾 Sneezing and snorting
🐾 Fever
🐾 Lack of appetite
🐾 Lethargy

In most instances, much like upper respiratory infections in humans, kennel cough will resolve with time & medical treatment. During a consultation, your veterinarian will prescribe medication and advise you how best to care for your dog during their recovery. During their recovery, please ensure they are eating and drinking, as well as isolating from other dogs as it is highly contagious. If your dog stops eating, drinking, or becomes more lethargic take them back to your vet immediately for reassessment.
If your dog shows any symptoms of Kennel Cough, please keep them home and notify us via mail at [email protected]

Our policy is that dogs stay isolated for 10 DAYS AFTER SYMPTOMS CEASE before returning to the centre.

Happy Barkday to Penny!

Penny is one of our regular boarding dogs at Oz Wagtails & has been coming to us for the past 12 years! We were very excited to get to share her Barkday with her today.

Penny got plenty of love & attention from the staff, including my lots of belly rubs. She also enjoyed a little bit of extra dinner tonight (only because she has a sensitive stomach so we do not give other treaties) 🥰

Penny is a little camera shy, but always a smiley & happy gal 🥹

Happy 2nd Barkday to Lilly! 🤩🐾

This sassy little lady had a great day getting absolutely spoilt rotten by the staff, some little treaties, & playing with all of her BFF's.

Lilly did not get to wear the Barkday bandana all day as she did try to eat it off herself - apparently it was not to her standard 😅
