In the spirit of Valentine's Day we'd love to remind our clients of hazardous items to your pets that come around this time of year:

🌸 Lilies are highly toxic to cats and can cause life threatening illness or death if any part of the plant or water is ingested.

🌹 Roses come with scary looking thorns that your furry friend can step on or ingest. Play it safe by keeping them trimmed and on a counter away from playful paws.

🍫 Chocolate and lollies are not a pets best friend. They include ingredients such as methylxanthines and xylitol which if ingested can cause a range of symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea and in some cases death if left untreated.

🍷 Wine, cocktails and beer can cause alcohol poisoning in pets so make sure no glasses are left unattended and spillage is wiped up.

🎁 Gift wrapping is a sight for curious eyes. Curious cats and dogs may try to play with, chew on or swallow ribbons and wrapping paper so make sure they are being placed in the bin.

🕯️ Candles are another hazard on Valentine's Day. The general rule is to not leave candles unattended but with animals around they should also be kept high and out of reach from wandering paws.

Pepsi came to see us for a general check up, dental and senior check up. The senior check up is recommended in cats from the age of 8 as they are heading towards the more senior stage of their lives so it can pick up any senior issues early.

Our senior check ups include a general check up, blood and urine testing, blood glucose test and a complimentary blood pressure check (which is valued at $50).
We can also do nail trims along with these appointments free of charge as older cats don't tend to sharpen their nails as often, therefore leaving the outer layer on.

In the end Pepsi had to have some of his teeth removed due to a tooth resorption issue. This resorption issue is most common in cats and is a disease in which the tooth and its roots slowly reabsorb. Tooth resorption is quite painful and can affect a cat's eating habit.

Regular check ups with your vet can help detect teeth issues early on.

If you are concerned your cat has problems with their teeth, give us a call on (07) 3544 6828 to book in for a consultation and Dr Andrew can assess your cat's teeth.

This is Creamy! Some of you might remember Creamy as she has featured quite regularly on our stories. She's grown so much since we last saw her. She recently came to see us as she wasn't eating as much as she usually does and wasn't her usual self.

When cats are unwell, they are very good at hiding their sickness. Small things such as your cat not eating as much, quieter then usual, personality change, change in toileting habits and sleeping more often could be a sign that your cat is unwell.

If you notice these things, give us a call on (07) 3544 6828 and we can discuss your options.

We had Simba come in recently as his owners noticed a small wound on his face. Luckily it wasn't a very bad wound and was already healing quite nicely.

If you notice any wounds on your cat, it's always best to get them checked out by the vet as there is always a risk it will get worse, it won't heal and your cat might be in pain.

We are available 8-6 Monday to Friday excluding Tuesday, and available over the weekend 9-11. If worried about your cat outside of these hours just give us a call on (07) 3544 6828 and we can see what we can do.

Ocean came to see us for his kitten vaccination course. It is recommended to start kitten vaccinations at 8 weeks old then subsequently at 12 weeks and 16 weeks to have them fully protected. If vaccinated outside of those ages then it is every 4 weeks until their kitten vaccination course has been complete.

Generally at their 16 week vaccination they are also desexed and microchipped if all is well.

This vaccination they get is an F3 vaccination which covers them against feline panleukopenia, cat flu, and calicivirus. This vaccination is then given yearly so as to continue to protect your cat, especially if they go outside, interact with other cats or go into catteries.

Give us a call today on (07) 3544 6828 to book your cat in for their vaccination and to keep them protected year round. Alternatively you can book online via our online portal.

'Huey' came to see Dr Andrew for his annual vaccination with his sister Ola. Huey's owner also noted that he has always suffered from a stinky breath and Dr Andrew noticed he had some plaque build up on his teeth. There are a few options to consider with your pets teeth, especially if they already have plaque build up:

🦷 Scale and Polish under anaesthetic at the vet

🦷 Brushing your cat's teeth with pet toothbrush and toothpaste

🦷 Dental biscuits such as Hill's t/d or Royal Canin dental

🦷 Water additives such as Aquadent or Tropiclean fresh breath

🦷A dental gel called Mavlab which lubricates the teeth and helps prevent plaque formation

Ideally these should all be used in conjunction with each other for the best results but having even 1 of these recommendations in your daily routine with your cat can help.

We currently have these in stock so come in store today!!

Recently we saw 'Ted' for his annual vaccination. No one would believe this handsome man is actually 16 years old. Along with his vaccination he also got tapeworming tablets.

Tapeworming tablets should be given every 3 months if you have a cat that likes to hunt geckos and lizards, even if they are indoor cats. No spot on treatment will remove this pesky tapeworm.

Symptoms of a tapeworm infestation include:

🐛Diarrhoea/Soft poo

🐛Worms coming out of their bum or in their poo

🐛Weight loss or excessive appetite with no weight gain

🐛Round bloated looking belly

🐛Vomiting, which may contain the worm

🐛Scooting or excessive grooming of their backend as it's itchy

You can give us a call on (07) 3544 6828 or call in if you would like to keep your cat protected against tapeworms. You don't need a consultation to give these to your cats, all we need is their weight for dispensing the right dosage.

We've seen little 'Roxy' a couple times now as she has had some recent stressful events that have caused some blood in her urine(Haematuria).

Events for cats such as moving house, cats in the neighborhood picking fights, new animal or baby in the house or more visitors coming over can make a cat quite stressful. Cats generally internalize their stress so most owners don't notice until a cat shows this stress outwardly such as blood in their urine(Haematuria).

Haematuria can also be caused by an infection as well as other reasons but in Roxy's case after a urine test was performed, it was deemed to be stress related. She was placed on pain relief and to reduce the stress in her environment.

Cleo came to us as she had been suffering from chronic diarrhoea.

Thankfully through Dr Andrews advice and regular check ins, she now has a healthier gut meaning better formed poo.

There are multiple reasons as to why a cat would be having diarrhoea meaning multiple different pathways to take. Give us a call today on (07) 3544 6828 if this sounds like your kitty so we can get your kitty feeling better.
