On the outskirts of Melbourne, hidden from the public, an illegal puppy factory has been in operation for years. Wyndham City Council are aware and have been there before to ‘inspect’, but they failed to take action and so the puppy factory stayed in business selling “show quality” puppies via the Trading Post.

After we sent the Councilors photos along with our complaint, they again sent out the council animal management officer. You would expect an illegal business to be shut down immediately and the dogs saved but our current laws protect the commercial interest of puppy farmers, they always have. Authorities must give the puppy farmer a chance to comply before they can be just shut down.
And so whilst the puppy farmer applies for a permit to become a legal puppy factory, the dogs continue to endure confinement and deprivation. And if Council approves the permit, the dogs will continue to endure confinement and deprivation.

This is what the ‘regulation’ of puppy factories looks like. Whilst Minister for Agriculture Peter Walsh states he has ‘cracked down on illegal puppy factories’ and claims Victoria has “the best animal welfare policy in the world’ nothing could be further from the truth. And the Labor Party just want to add more layers to the current legislation to keep puppy factories ‘regulated’ so dogs like these will continue to suffer.

It is difficult to understand why those in power see the abuse, cruelty, consumer fraud and lifelong deprivation of our companion animals something to be merely ‘regulated’.

This week in Western Australia a woman was charged yet again for cruelty to dogs on her puppy factory. In NSW a woman convicted of aggravated cruelty to dogs on her puppy factory is free to factory farm over 100 adult dogs still on her property. In Victoria a convicted animal abuser continues to legally operate his puppy factory despite having 50 dogs seized, he still has 100.

Is anyone confident that puppy factories can be regulated?

With approximately 80 legal puppy factories in Victoria, why is the Government listening to the 80 and not the majority?
Make sure you take the opportunity leading up to the Victorian State election to voice your disgust at this continual legalized cruelty and demand that the factory farming of companion animals be shut down once and for all.
