With storm season well and truly upon us, now is the time to check that you & your pets are ready!

Here are some essential steps to prepare:

🐾 Create an emergency kit with supplies for both you and your pets (with emergency contact numbers)
🐾 Ensure your pets are microchipped and wearing up-to-date ID tags
🐾 Have a safe, indoor area where your pets can shelter during severe weather
🐾 Contact the clinic & chat to one of our nurses about over the counter options to manage storm anxiety
🐾 If your pet struggles with storms, consider a behavioural consultation with a vet to discuss further options.

We want to make everyone in the community aware of a current outbreak happening, which could possibly affect your pets!

Many owners are aware of canine parvovirus, that is generally spread amongst puppies & wreaks havoc on the gastrointestinal system. We need to remain as vigilant as ever - especially for our puppies but also for our unvaccinated or immune-compromised pets. For cats, the feline panleukopenia virus is even more dangerous.

What to do:
❓Read through AWLQ’s post
❓Make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date or call the clinic to check.
❓Monitor your pet closely - Call us if you notice any of the symptoms listed.

🚨 Urgent Alert: Parvo & Panleuk Outbreak in SEQ & Northern NSW! 🚨

There has been a rise in cases of canine parvovirus (parvo) and feline panleukopenia (panleuk) in Brisbane, Logan, Gold Coast, Ipswich, and Northern NSW and AWLQ is calling on all pet owners to act quickly to protect their furry friends. Both diseases are highly contagious, potentially deadly, and costly to treat.

𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗹𝗲𝘂𝗸𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟵𝟬% 𝗳𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗸𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀, 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

😷 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea (often bloody)
- Lethargy
- Loss of appetite
- Fever

If your pet shows any of these symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately.

🛑 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗜𝗦 𝗞𝗘𝗬!
- Make sure your pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations.
- Keep cats indoors to limit exposure, especially young or unvaccinated ones.
- If surrendering a pet, ensure they’ve been vaccinated 2 weeks before surrender.

⚠️ AWLQ Gold Coast Rehoming Centre is not accepting surrendered cats at this time due to the outbreak.

We want to make sure that everyone has an enjoyable Howl-aween & this includes our pets!

There are several dangers to our furry mates during the spooky season! Keep the below tips in mind when celebrating with your loved ones 💕

🎃 Keep chocolate and lollies out of reach: Chocolate and anything that contains xylitol (artificial sweetener) can be toxic to pets. Make sure to stash them out of reach! Even after Halloween is over - the risk isn’t gone.

👻 Be cautious with decorations and remember our pets can be curious in nature. They can get too close to candles, cords & pieces of spider web.

🎃 Costume comfort is key: If your pet enjoys dressing up, make sure their costume is comfy, not too tight, and allows them to move, see, and breathe easily. Avoid costumes with small pieces that could be swallowed and if they show any signs of discomfort, it's best to take if off right away.

👻 Keep them safe indoors: Trick-or-treaters can stress pets out. Keep them safe inside, away from the front door to avoid any escapes.

Xander was quick as lightning and didn’t waste a second when food was dropped on the ground. We know sometimes accidents happen & when they do, it’s important to reach out & discuss the situation with your veterinary team (or closest emergency centre). The sooner we act, the better the outcome for your pet!

Let’s talk about everyone’s favourite appointment!

Puppy/kitten vaccines are not only adored by veterinary staff for cute cuddle time but also a really important visit.

In these first 3-4 appointments you and your new furbaby will receive invaluable information & treatment. We have to remember that these are the visits that will set your puppy or kitten up for the rest of their days!

These big visits include:
- Initial vaccination course - which takes effect while the mother’s natural antibodies decrease.
- Microchipping - to make sure you can be contacted if anything happens.
- Parasite treatment & future planning
- Desexing options - the pros & cons/the who, what, when, where, why & how
- Initial health check - to identify any concerns as soon as possible
- Behavioural & training discussions
- Time to answer your questions
& so much more!

This is just the tip of the iceberg! And while we are definitely excited to see your new tiny ball of fluff - we also love having the opportunity to see them through these first major milestones!

Do you know how to search your pup for ticks?

Follow these steps:
🐾 Move your fingertips through their coat at skin level, feeling for any bumps
🐾 Start at their head and neck (don't forget to check their mouth and ears!)
🐾 Continue checking down their front legs to their paws - make sure to check between their toes
🐾 Search their chest, belly, back, tail, and back legs
🐾 Remove their collar to search for any ticks hiding underneath

Teddy came in for his desexing a few months ago, during this year’s Operation Wanted campaign and we just had to share this adorable shot of him. Fun fact: this posture is known as Splooting, it is very common and a great way for dogs to relax, stretch and cool off, bringing as much of their abdomen into contact with the cool floor.

It’s time for another Willdlife Wednesday:
It’s important to remember that in Indooroopilly we have an abundance of incredible wildlife. We need to be especially careful when we’re on the road.
🦆Keep an eye out when driving for any animals that may be crossing
🛑 Stop and check any injured animals (especially marsupials) as pouches may contain a joey - like the one pictured below!
📞 If you identify any juvenile or injured wildlife - give us a call to determine the next steps to help them. Please do not remove any animals from a pouch as this can cause further injuries.

We’re back today to talk about one of our favourite topics: Dental Month!

Here at Indooroopilly Vet Clinic we celebrate dental month in August with lots of dentals and checkups! What this means for you is we can help your pet have beautiful teeth, without as much of a price tag.

🦷 Because let’s face it - no one wants their pets teeth to look this! This tooth is only held in the mouth by pieces of the gum - the roots are completely gone! This is our best definition of “waving in the breeze”.

We’re here for another weird and wonderful wildlife Wednesday! We had a snake brought into the clinic who seemed to have a couple of injuries, and we needed radiographs to confirm whether there was any damage to the spine.

We think this is a really incredible shot! Check out all those vertebrae - this is how they manage to twist around so much!

We’re here today to chat about another product that you might not have heard of - pet laxative. This product is available in a number of brands - in a yummy malt-based gel.

Pet laxatives are designed to not only help soften faeces - which can be helpful in cases of constipation. But is also of great assistance for animals who ingest large quantities of hair. For all of our long haired cats especially, that have problems after grooming - this is a real treat.

Not only that but application in cats is super easy. Simply smear a line on the top of the paws and allow your cat to lick it straight up!

Another bandage art beauty! Luna came in with a cut on her paw and left with a beautiful piece of artwork - we think the bandage says it all, don't you? “Ouch!”
