The holiday season can be an exceptionally busy time of year, with many of us making travel arrangements and preparing for festivities. During this hectic period, it's absolutely crucial to stay organized and prepared when it comes to our pet care arrangements. For families planning to board their beloved pets in kennels and catteries over the holiday season, there are important health requirements that must be met. Most boarding facilities have strict vaccination policies in place to protect all their animal guests. These facilities typically require comprehensive proof that your pet's vaccinations are current and up to date. As your veterinary care team, we want to ensure your holiday plans proceed smoothly, so we're here with a friendly and timely reminder to check your pet's vaccination status well in advance of their boarding stay. This will help avoid any last-minute complications that could affect your holiday arrangements.

We've been seeing a lot of furry friends like Tommy coming in with eye, skin & ear irritations lately. The changing weather can be tough on our pets'.

Keep an eye out for these signs of infection/irritation in your pets:

๐Ÿ‘€ Itching or scratching

๐Ÿ’ง Unusual discharge

๐Ÿ”ด Redness

๐Ÿ˜‰ Squinting or keeping the eyes closed

๐ŸซจShaking of the head

๐Ÿพ Rubbing or rolling around on the ground

๐Ÿถ Pawing at the face

Noticed any of these? Don't wait! Early detection is key. Remember, our furry friends can't tell us when they're uncomfortable, so it's up to us to watch out for them.

Stay vigilant and keep those tails wagging! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜บ

๐Ÿฆœ Lorikeet Paralysis Alert

Our clinic has noticed an increase in Lorikeet paralysis cases again recently. While the numbers aren't as high as last year, it's still important to be vigilant.

What to look out for:

- Difficulty flying or inability to fly
- Weakness in legs or inability to perch or stand

If you spot a Lorikeet showing these symptoms, please contact us immediately. Quick action can make a big difference in their recovery.

Let's work together to keep our local Lorikeets healthy and flying high!

Did you know: November is National cancer awareness month. So today, weโ€™re here to talk about lumps & bumps!

Many types of lumps and bumps can develop at any age. Although they may not be cause for concern, paying attention to your pets skin and having our team examine them if you find one is important.

Some common lumps that we see include:

- Abscesses
- Fatty tumours or lipomas
- Cancerous lumps
- Parasites
- Allergic/inflammatory lumps

If you notice any new lumps or bumps - donโ€™t hesitate to book an appointment with us for an examination. The vet may then recommend further tests if necessary. These could include fine needle aspirates, biopsies, or imaging studies to determine the nature of the lump.

It's also important to keep track of any existing lumps, noting changes in size, shape, or texture. This information can be valuable for your veterinarian during follow-up visits.

โœจSuperstar Story โœจ
Our superstar patient here is Harriet! She came in a few weeks ago because her owner had noticed a lump on each of her front legs. We performed an examination and monitored her for a short period. Harriet then came back for a recheck. At this visit, the vet recommended an excisional biopsyโ€”surgically removing both lumps to identify their nature.

Harriet's owner brought her in for multiple visits, including frequent bandage changes, and had to manage Harriet's resistance to wearing the e-collar. Histopathology (examination of the tissue by an external laboratory) revealed that one of the lumps was a dermal melanocytoma. While some melanomas can be dangerous, we were thrilled to discover that Harriet's lump was benign.

With storm season well and truly upon us, now is the time to check that you & your pets are ready!

Here are some essential steps to prepare:

๐Ÿพ Create an emergency kit with supplies for both you and your pets (with emergency contact numbers)
๐Ÿพ Ensure your pets are microchipped and wearing up-to-date ID tags
๐Ÿพ Have a safe, indoor area where your pets can shelter during severe weather
๐Ÿพ Contact the clinic & chat to one of our nurses about over the counter options to manage storm anxiety
๐Ÿพ If your pet struggles with storms, consider a behavioural consultation with a vet to discuss further options.

We want to make everyone in the community aware of a current outbreak happening, which could possibly affect your pets!

Many owners are aware of canine parvovirus, that is generally spread amongst puppies & wreaks havoc on the gastrointestinal system. We need to remain as vigilant as ever - especially for our puppies but also for our unvaccinated or immune-compromised pets. For cats, the feline panleukopenia virus is even more dangerous.

What to do:
โ“Read through AWLQโ€™s post
โ“Make sure your petโ€™s vaccinations are up to date or call the clinic to check.
โ“Monitor your pet closely - Call us if you notice any of the symptoms listed.

๐Ÿšจ Urgent Alert: Parvo & Panleuk Outbreak in SEQ & Northern NSW! ๐Ÿšจ

There has been a rise in cases of canine parvovirus (parvo) and feline panleukopenia (panleuk) in Brisbane, Logan, Gold Coast, Ipswich, and Northern NSW and AWLQ is calling on all pet owners to act quickly to protect their furry friends. Both diseases are highly contagious, potentially deadly, and costly to treat.

- Make sure your pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations.
- Keep cats indoors to limit exposure, especially young or unvaccinated ones.
- If surrendering a pet, ensure theyโ€™ve been vaccinated 2 weeks before surrender.

โš ๏ธ AWLQ Gold Coast Rehoming Centre is not accepting surrendered cats at this time due to the outbreak.

We are working on providing additional vaccination resources for the communityโ€”more details coming soon. For more info, visit our website or follow us on social media. Letโ€™s work together to keep our pets safe! ๐Ÿพ

We want to make sure that everyone has an enjoyable Howl-aween & this includes our pets!

There are several dangers to our furry mates during the spooky season! Keep the below tips in mind when celebrating with your loved ones ๐Ÿ’•

๐ŸŽƒ Keep chocolate and lollies out of reach: Chocolate and anything that contains xylitol (artificial sweetener) can be toxic to pets. Make sure to stash them out of reach! Even after Halloween is over - the risk isnโ€™t gone.

๐Ÿ‘ป Be cautious with decorations and remember our pets can be curious in nature. They can get too close to candles, cords & pieces of spider web.

๐ŸŽƒ Costume comfort is key: If your pet enjoys dressing up, make sure their costume is comfy, not too tight, and allows them to move, see, and breathe easily. Avoid costumes with small pieces that could be swallowed and if they show any signs of discomfort, it's best to take if off right away.

๐Ÿ‘ป Keep them safe indoors: Trick-or-treaters can stress pets out. Keep them safe inside, away from the front door to avoid any escapes.

Pictured here is one of our beautiful patients, showing off his bandana while he brings up his Halloween snack. Xander was quick as lightning and didnโ€™t waste a second when food was dropped on the ground. We know sometimes accidents happen & when they do, itโ€™s important to reach out & discuss the situation with your veterinary team (or closest emergency centre). The sooner we act, the better the outcome for your pet!

Wishing everyone a Happy Halloween!

Letโ€™s talk about everyoneโ€™s favourite appointment!

Puppy/kitten vaccines are not only adored by veterinary staff for cute cuddle time but also a really important visit.

In these first 3-4 appointments you and your new furbaby will receive invaluable information & treatment. We have to remember that these are the visits that will set your puppy or kitten up for the rest of their days!

These big visits include:
- Initial vaccination course - which takes effect while the motherโ€™s natural antibodies decrease.
- Microchipping - to make sure you can be contacted if anything happens.
- Parasite treatment & future planning
- Desexing options - the pros & cons/the who, what, when, where, why & how
- Initial health check - to identify any concerns as soon as possible
- Behavioural & training discussions
- Time to answer your questions
& so much more!

This is just the tip of the iceberg! And while we are definitely excited to see your new tiny ball of fluff - we also love having the opportunity to see them through these first major milestones!

Do you know how to search your pup for ticks?

Follow these steps:
๐Ÿพ Move your fingertips through their coat at skin level, feeling for any bumps
๐Ÿพ Start at their head and neck (don't forget to check their mouth and ears!)
๐Ÿพ Continue checking down their front legs to their paws - make sure to check between their toes
๐Ÿพ Search their chest, belly, back, tail, and back legs
๐Ÿพ Remove their collar to search for any ticks hiding underneath
