Foundation Program
God I love cockers! Puppy Charlie has never done luring before. Look at him go.
.
Charlie has started the FOUNDATION PROGRAM this week. It will cover all of the basics and house manners with private lessons and walk and trains where I train Charlie. A nice mixture to speed things up.
.
It will happen over the next 2 months so will be quite concentrated for his Mum.
Homework for her will be about 15 mins daily.
.
This program is good for any age but marketed on the website under Puppy Training.
.
Check it out if you are wanting a mate who loves being with you and does all his basics effortlessly.
.

Flexi lead
Good quality retractable leashes are great for extra freedom on walks. I use FLEXI BRAND-with tape not cord. 5metre.
.
The dogs I like to use them the most on are dogs that I’ve already trained to loose leash walk and aren’t reactive to anything.
.
Brand new puppies needing to explore the world also benefit from them in combination with teaching them all about leash pressure separately.
.
Picking an appropriate place to use them is very important. High car traffic areas or where dogs are running are not appropriate. People and dogs can get hurt. Large open spaces are best for learning how to operate them and control them well.
.
One thing I always practice when on flexi lines or long lines is recall. Sometimes the line isn’t going to be fast enough or you aren’t going to be able to get your dog back to you without having recall. I find this a huge help when using them in the environment.
.
I believe there’s a place for these in training and living your lives together. It just needs common sense on safety and a little bit of training for your dog so they can enjoy some freedom in on leash areas.

Name game
Going into a new environment, some dogs really struggle to engage with their owner. I like to play this little game before trying to walk anywhere.I call this the NAME GAME and it’s very simple. Loving Cindy’s head snap to eye contact playing this game.
Exactly what we want...

Disengagement Game
At some stage throughout a reactivity program we play this little game called a disengagement game.
.
First we practice it when there’s no dogs. It’s just a fun game. Then we can start doing it around people, bikes, kids and dogs at a distance. Learning to disengage from distractions is how we end up being neutral to whatever they react to normally.
.
The dog I have is Ollie.
He went through the reactivity program a couple of years ago. He no longer cares about other dogs. He used to bark and lunge at all.
.
The little Iggie is Maple.
He has FOMO really bad leading him to bark and jump all over the place. He’s on his 5th lesson. He’s done foundation work and now we are adding different dogs every session in to the mix.
.
Playing a series of games around dogs gets Maple engaged and remembering he gets lots of rewards for concentrating on Mum. The great thing is with time and practice, he can be around other dogs and know they are none of his business.
.
Both dogs did absolutely amazing today in the lesson. The 2 dogs were able to relax in each other’s company at the end which means Maple is moving nicely in the right
direction.

.
Vinnie is a power puller on his walks so setting expectations even exiting the car is important. Not to mention a safety issue.
Keeping the excitement down so he has half a chance of walking nicely is necessary.
.
This was Vinnies very first time learning not to move until he hears his release word, so it took a few tries. Perfectly normal. Perfect time to show you how I teach it.
After this rep, Vinnie and his sister Poppy did it easily when it was their turn to train and we swapped them over. Now Vinnie wasn’t restrained in the car which is why I’m utilising the lead from the outside. He was trying to slither out the door😂.
Last session we did exactly the same thing with the exit door at home so he learns not to bolt through the door when it’s walk time.
