Chocolate

Chocolate is in abundance this time of year – but this could be dangerous for your dog!
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine which can be harmful to dogs if ingested - the darker the chocolate (ie. 99% cocoa), the more toxic. Whilst white chocolate does not contain these substances, it can still cause tummy upset from the fat and sugar.
The symptoms of toxicity from chocolate are:
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Hyperactivity
• Tremors
• Seizures
• Racing heart rhythm progressing to abnormal rhythms
• Death in severe cases
If your dog has eaten chocolate, it is important to contact (us/the emergency centre) straight away, with information on hand about the type of chocolate and the amount consumed. If your dog has eaten a toxic dose, they may need treatment to get the chocolate out of their system!

hello everyone!!!
As we are getting into summer it’s important to know about heat stroke.

Signs of heat stroke include:
☀️panting
☀️ red gums
☀️ vomiting or diahrea
☀️ drooling
☀️ pacing and unsettled
☀️ glassy eyes

what to do if you notice these symptoms:
1. immediately put into shade

2. apply cool water on fur NOTE do not use ice cold water or ice as can go into shock.

3. immediately come down to our clinic or if after hours go to the closest emergency

Things to think about during these hot months

1. walking during peak sun causes injuries on the paws. if you are unable to keep your hand on the concrete for more than 5 seconds it’s too hot for your pet

2. Never leave your pet in car- leaving your windows down is not enough. temperatures in the car can raise almost 6 degrees within the first 10 minutes.

how to keep your pet cool:
- enrichment ice cubes with carrot/kibble frozen inside
- for long haired cats and dogs make sure to keep up with grooming
- air conditioning
- access to shade and water
- swimming or playing with water

4. telling your animal to stop playing in the sun.
Sometimes you have to make the decision for your animal to stop playing or going outside. it’s common for high driven animals to continue playing until they reach heat exhaustion.

Hello everyone!!
As the new month is coming up, so is tick season.
Although ticks are out all year round, we find them most prominent during these up coming months. (august to february)

The paralysis tick is the main tick we are concerned about as it causes death within a few hours if untreated.

We need to protect your kitties and doggos during this season by ensuring they have had their preventative treatment. These can be bought over the counter at our clinic.

If you find a tick on your loved one, remove it immediately and put it in a zip lock bag and head to us straight away with the tick.
If after hours go to your closest emergency vet.
24hr animal hospital. 34 Groggs road, Jindalee QLD 4074

Signs of tick paralysis can include loss of bark, wobbly in back legs, unable to stand, disinterest in food and water and raspy breathing.

take care of yourself and your furry family 🐾
