With horses, every ride, even if you get placed last, is a step forward in your journey. The courage to enter the arena is a victory in itself, and every effort teaches you, shapes you, and brings you closer to the partnership and skill you're striving for. Every journey is individual and every journey is different. Your goals are yours and shouldn’t be influenced by competitors or others around you. Enjoy your own journey.

People often ask if I think their horse is doing it to upset the owner. A horse doesn’t think like a human they are a beautiful animal and we are very privileged to be able to hop on their back.

Nothing better than a ride between storms ⛈️ a few cancellations today gave me the opportunity to fit a ride in during the day. It was only 20 minutes with thunderstorms all around us but Thomas was foot perfect.

Minor imbalances resulting from a crooked body can have measurable consequences. These kinds of flaws in a rider's posture are often overlooked but we need to fix them. This rider is unbalanced, leaning to the outside.

I think this imbalance begins with their uneven feet. It doesn't matter if the stirrups are uneven or if they have twisted the saddle, so their feet are uneven with the nearside foot lower. What matters is that their feet are uneven, and that has caused the rider to tilt their shoulders in the opposite direction in order to counterbalance their uneven feet.

This rider is not centered in their posture and because the rider's tilting upper body is well above the horse's center of balance, their small degree of leaning out gets multiplied by the height of the of the weight of rider's torso. The poor posture we see has a substantial impact on the shared center of horse-rider balance.

The goal of riding is unity of shared balance and movement between horse and rider. This rider's poor posture has made the horse's ability to unify with the rider in a mutually shared balance more difficult. As riders we need to understand every difficulty that we impose on our horses if we hope to improve.

The result of this rider's leaning posture will be seen immediately when the rider attempts a circle. The right image of the child balancing a broom shows how a horse tries to unify into shared balance and movement with their rider. Horses want to be directly under the center of the rider's mass to create a shared center of balance.

In a polo game an opponent once bumped me so hard that it caused my girth buckles to break quickly, one after the other. As my saddle bounced side to side with me in it at a fast gallop, my horse shifted left and right under me to keep us centered together in a single shared balance. Horses want unity.

Just as my polo horse tried to balance me like kid with the broom, the pictured horse will move to stay under the leaning rider. The result of the outward leaning will become obvious when the circle becomes larger. As the horse moves to stay under the outward leaning rider, the circle will look like the image at left. Similarly, if a rider leans inward while attempting a circle, the circle will become smaller as the horse works to maintain unity with a flawed rider's leaning posture.
