NAMI ADOPTION

Beautiful sweet 'Nami' is a 14-month-old desexed female Border Collie (x Kelpie).

Nami has the sweetest temperament, is very beautiful and great with other dogs.

She is a high energy, healthy dog who would love an adoring and equally high energy human companion.

Nami is bright and would excel with further training. She ideally needs a large property or hobby-farm where she could help out and feel purposeful.

Please contact Shell on 0458461935 for adoption enquiries.

EDMUND's STORY - A Tale of Perseverance and Transformation

From snippets of information gleaned, we suspect 4yo entire male Kooli 'Edmund' was crated for most of his life and used as a breeding dog 😢🤬

He then somehow ended up in the care of an elderly woman who simply couldn't manage him due to his extreme fear, anxiety and lack of behavioural know-how. A big-hearted Brunswick Heads couple took him in but soon realised his problems were also beyond their scope of expertise. They asked Byron Dog Rescue for our help.

After scheduling Edmund for a vet visit to get him health-checked, microchipped and vaccinated we very quickly and unexpectedly discovered just how damaged and terrified of the big wide world he was. Poor Edmund metamorphosised into a Werewolf... lunging, snarling and snapping ferociously at the vets and nurses. He was petrified and well beyond muzzling.

Not wishing to stress him any further, he was sent home with a cocktail of anti-anxiety meds and an appointment for the following day. We arrived at the vets next morning to discover poor Edmund, his carers, the vet and nurses all in the outside yard attempting to calm a drugged version of the werewolf. I sent the traumatised carers away and managed to basically truss Edmund to a wire fence allowing the vet to jab him with a tranquilizer. Once completely sedated he was carried inside, chipped and vaxed. Thankfully, even though unscheduled, the vets agreed to castrate him too, in order to avoid any further stressful encounters.

In the meantime, we had made contact with Jane, who had been living with and training working dogs her whole life. She felt, together with partner Warren and their elderly deaf Heeler 'Cricket' that they could foster, love and help Edmund...

Three months later, and still a work in progress, 'Eddie' is nevertheless a transformed dog. He ADORES Jane & Warren, is incredibly affectionate, welcomes guests and thoroughly enjoys lots of beach time and adventures. And the cherry on the cake; Jane couldn't bear to see him go anywhere else and has ADOPTED him!!

Huge thanks to original carers Juliana & Phil, the vets for persevering and not giving Edmund another type of needle, and of course Jane, Warren & Cricket for giving this loving but tormented boy a second chance 🙏💖🙌😅

MALFOY ADOPTION

'Malfoy' is a 5-month-old male purebred short-haired Border Collie.

He is brimming with health and vitality, has a VERY sweet soft temperament, is extremely well adjusted and is excellent with other dogs.

Malfoy is primed and ready for some serious training, where he will excel.

His mother is a working long-haired Border Collie and the sire a short-haired tricolour Border Collie.

His previous owner was misguidedly given the notion that there was a demand for Border Collie puppies. Upon advertising, he soon discovered all the wrong people with inappropriate and/or small suburban properties were showing interest. Having cared for his pups beautifully, he could not send them to unsuitable new homes so instead surrendered both 'Malfoy' and his litter buddy 'Helmut' to BDR for proper and careful placement.

These boy's have what it takes to be possibly trained as working dogs or would suit hobby farms/properties with lots of space to run, play, be trained and mentally stimulated. They also possess adorable, affectionate nature's and will make stunningly gorgeous pets.

Please contact Shell on 0458461935 for adoption enquiries.

COCO ADOPTION
Coco, a desexed female Australian Kelpie, will be 9-years-old at the end of May.

Sadly, she recently accidently-on-purpose killed a newcomer chicken on her property (no blood) and because there are many chickens and ducks on the property, Coco is now chained up and frustrated.

She is a very sweet, healthy and sprightly girl with an intense working drive. Her family are hoping Coco may find a new farm where she could help out with her honed herding skills.

Coco is not a domestic dog. She doesn’t walk well on-leash and lunges at other dogs wanting to control, nip and herd them. She would work well with another dog or team of dogs, but desperately needs a job.

Can you help Coco? Please contact Shell on 0458461935.

JET UPDATE – SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED
Gaining as much information about surrendered dogs from their previous owners is extremely helpful and part of the process to rehome them appropriately and successfully.

We learned that 3yo Kelpie ‘Jet’ had lived on an unfenced property, had never wandered, was very loving & loyal and did not handle being tied or chained up.

When Gary and Sandy, who live on a gorgeous 23acre unfenced hinterland property, asked us to match them with a mature, small to medium suitable dog, we suggested they come meet Jet.

The rest is history. Gary & Sandy’s home now hosts a beautiful love affair with Jet who has settled in perfectly, even accepting the horses and rabbit without a fuss.

Gary says “Thank you Shell, your match-up was perfectly on the button. Jet is having a ball. He’s such a great dog and we love him to bits!”

BERTHA UPDATE – SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED
We introduced 3½yo Chocolate Labrador Bertha (now ‘Lox’) to Bagel cafe owners Emily & Mitch who knew exactly the dog they were looking to adopt.

Lox settled into her new home immediately; rolling around and playing fetch on her new lush green lawn. She then enjoyed a visit to the local pet store where she picked out several new toys, the green crocodile becoming her favourite and constant companion.

She has responded brilliantly to some training and adores the beach outings, different and interesting walks, helping with the gardening at home and hanging with Emily & Mitch at their cafe where she has become a popular and official bagel inspector 🥯

Emily said “Lox is beyond happy and our lives have completely changed and brightened with all the love and joy Lox has brought. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to adopt her. We're not sure who won the lottery because we are perfect for Lox and she is beyond perfect for us ♥️"

PS. Lox’s sire Alfie has also been successfully adopted. His glorious story is coming soon.

MEIKO ADOPTION
8½-year-old desexed male Cocker Spaniel ‘Meiko’ is in need of a new home due to family issues.

Meiko is a sweet friendly affectionate boy who still behaves like a dog half his years. He is playful and socialises well with other dogs.

He would love a home with another dog for company or with someone who works from home or is retired but still loves to get out and about for walks.

Meiko does have the typical Cocker Spaniel trait of possessiveness... not with other dogs but with humans. If he finds a toy, a stick or something he decides is his, he will nip (and has bitten once) if you attempt to retrieve the item from him. For this reason we would not recommend him around children and would suggest you simply let him lose interest in the object unless you have the courage, experience and skill to redirect this behaviour.

Please contact Shell on 0458461935.

🌼 STORM ADOPTION 🌼
2-year-7-month-old desexed female English/American Staffy ‘Storm’ has been surrendered for rehoming through absolutely no fault of her own.

Storm is an all-round darling sweetheart.

Naturally, she loves human company and is fantastic with children of all ages. She is also very playful and submissive with other dogs. She has never met pocket pets, chickens or farm animals but can co-exist well with cats.

Storm knows basic commands but can be a bit of a scamp if she doesn’t feel like complying. She is also a puller on-leash but does well on a front-leader harness. Storm would definitely benefit from some further training and of course plenty of exercise and stimulation.

Storm would love a life-companion or family who wouldn’t leave her at home for long periods. She is crate-trained and settled reasonably well in her previous family’s laundry for short periods.

Please only apply if you meet the above requirements and have a fenced yard. Please contact Shell on 0458461935.

JESS UPDATE – SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED
Many thanks to all of you who contacted us, concerned about beautiful 3yo girl ‘Jess’ the working Kelpie.

Jess had developed a deep and quite hostile jealousy of other dogs because when she wasn’t working the cattle she was chained up in the garage looking out at the farms house dog, a Labrador, who received all the love and affection and enjoyed the comforts of home inside the farm house.

After a couple of failed foster attempts – due to her jealousy of other dogs – we felt she needed her very own home as a single dog where she would soak up all her humans love and attention.

Charli and dad Steve, who live in a suburban little coastal village with a well fenced large yard, offered to foster Jess. Within two weeks Jess had settled into her new life where she LOVED being allowed inside and ADORED all the love and affection.

Jess, who had never been to the beach, now visits her local beach twice daily where she thoroughly enjoys rounding up all the other dogs then takes herself for a huge swim and surf in the waves.

Charli and Steve decided to adopt her and we are thrilled to report that Jess is now positively gleeful about her new lifestyle and is very very content 🙌🥰

STARBURST ADOPTION
Gentle little affectionate 1-year-old desexed male Pomeranian x Japanese Spitz ‘Starburst’ was originally found wandering the streets in Sydney. He had obviously suffered some trauma and does initially fear strangers, particularly men. He warms up pretty quickly however.

Now living near Mullumbimby, sweet Starburst is looking for a new home due to his severe separation anxiety (howls, cries and barks). We feel he will need another dog for company or a human companion or family who work from home or can have Starburst in their company most of the time.

He is very sociable and playful with other dogs, great with children and can cohabitate with a dog-friendly cat. Starburst is young and very active. He walks well on-leash and will need plenty of exercise and stimulation. This breed loves to play and engage in their families activities. He obeys basic commands and will need regular grooming/brushing.

Starburst does have a stubborn streak and will avoid being caught if he is having too much fun. He also has a penchant for chasing Cane Toads. Further training will do him the world of good.

Please contact Shell on 0458461935 for adoption enquiries.

MAXI ADOPTION
We rescued handsome 7-month-old male Kelpie x Bull Arab ‘Maxi’ from the pound where he was yet another dog abandoned by his irresponsible human – not microchipped, not registered and not vaccinated (is there an emoji that illustrates someone tearing their hair out in frustration?!)

Maxi is an exceedingly sweet natured boy. He is very responsive to directions and corrections, is quite submissive and excellent with other dogs. He is happily learning the ropes at our shelter where big boys Ziggy the Lab/Boerboel and Monty the Maremma have instinctively taken on role modelling for young Maxi.

He will no doubt be a mix of very active combined with chilled affectionate couch potato.

Maxi has now been microchipped, worm/flea/tick treated and vaccinated. He will need ongoing exercise, stimulation, training and socialisation.

Maxi would suit life on a property/farm or would be the most charming companion for someone with an active lifestyle.

Please contact Shell on 0458461935.

PETAL UPDATE – SUCCESSFULLY ADOPTED
We rescued gorgeous little girl ‘Petal’ from the pound four months ago when she was just 9-months old. We vaccinated and treated her and two months later had her spayed.

Audrey met Petal in late November and found her “divine”. After assessing Audrey’s home, we were pretty insistent that in order to set Petal up for success, they needed to secure their front yard with some fencing and a new gate. Once the fencing was completed, Petal headed off on her trial adoption.

She is now beautifully bonded with Audrey and also enjoys the company of her two flatmates. Petal was approved to accompany Audrey to work in her office and occasionally trots off with Liv who works on a farm.

“The total sweetheart” loves her beach visits and is shining at Barco Dog Training on Sunday mornings. Pictured: This morning at Barco, Petal reunited with her shelter buddy Merri (the Dingo x Staffy)+, who is currently enjoying her trial adoption.

We miss you Petal, but hey, what a wonderful life you’re living!! 🥰🥰
