EDMUND's STORY - A Tale of Perseverance and Transformation
From snippets of information gleaned, we suspect 4yo entire male Kooli 'Edmund' was crated for most of his life and used as a breeding dog 😢🤬
He then somehow ended up in the care of an elderly woman who simply couldn't manage him due to his extreme fear, anxiety and lack of behavioural know-how. A big-hearted Brunswick Heads couple took him in but soon realised his problems were also beyond their scope of expertise. They asked Byron Dog Rescue for our help.
After scheduling Edmund for a vet visit to get him health-checked, microchipped and vaccinated we very quickly and unexpectedly discovered just how damaged and terrified of the big wide world he was. Poor Edmund metamorphosised into a Werewolf... lunging, snarling and snapping ferociously at the vets and nurses. He was petrified and well beyond muzzling.
Not wishing to stress him any further, he was sent home with a cocktail of anti-anxiety meds and an appointment for the following day. We arrived at the vets next morning to discover poor Edmund, his carers, the vet and nurses all in the outside yard attempting to calm a drugged version of the werewolf. I sent the traumatised carers away and managed to basically truss Edmund to a wire fence allowing the vet to jab him with a tranquilizer. Once completely sedated he was carried inside, chipped and vaxed. Thankfully, even though unscheduled, the vets agreed to castrate him too, in order to avoid any further stressful encounters.
In the meantime, we had made contact with Jane, who had been living with and training working dogs her whole life. She felt, together with partner Warren and their elderly deaf Heeler 'Cricket' that they could foster, love and help Edmund...
Three months later, and still a work in progress, 'Eddie' is nevertheless a transformed dog. He ADORES Jane & Warren, is incredibly affectionate, welcomes guests and thoroughly enjoys lots of beach time and adventures. And the cherry on the cake; Jane couldn't bear to see him go anywhere else and has ADOPTED him!!
Huge thanks to original carers Juliana & Phil, the vets for persevering and not giving Edmund another type of needle, and of course Jane, Warren & Cricket for giving this loving but tormented boy a second chance 🙏💖🙌😅
