Fun fact. Shih Tzus are the 3rd closest DNA match to wolves; Alaskan and Siberian Huskies are first. This is because they are one of the oldest breeds in the world, originally bred by Tibetan Monks to be alarm dogs for the temples. The Mastifs were the guard dogs. There is art work going back two thousand years depicting them. They were then given to Chinese Royalty and it became a crime for anyone else to own them. This prevented breeding with other breeds and diluting the DNA. When the Chinese Royal Family was overthrown, they were almost destroyed to extinction out of spite. Few survived in rural areas. In the early 20th century, a European breeder fell in love with this funny, little dog breed in the Chinese countryside and set out to bring them back with very controlled breeding programs. So, if you have a full bred Shih Tzu, you almost have a wolf.
