After some difficult stitching of the dorsal cut because of the antlers laid back and access from the side, I finally put this together on Friday after about 5hrs work. The heavy skin needs to be held in place until the glue sets up and keeps the detail etc. the inside of the mouth will be detailed and finished only when the skin is completely dry and hard. Until then he sits on my bench roaring at the roof each day!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of being interviewed by our local Courier Mail about the full mount Boar in the Grand Hotel. A really good, informative and unbiased article about Taxidermy and feral animals, hopefully the public see this as the art form it is.

Here’s a progress post of a huge NSW red stag I will be putting together in a couple of weeks time. As it was shot during the roar in April my client chose an open mouth mount in Pedestal form to fully display those antlers and replicate the roaring position they are so well known for.

A few months ago I was commissioned to make a boar mount in 2 halves to be displayed in an historic Pub in Childers QLD. The front half will be separated by a wall to the back end, a lot of pig hunters visit the Grand Hotel on their way north so the mount will get a lot of attention and has been a talking point since it was first caught back in August. I will deliver it next Wed and apparently the local newspaper want to do a feature story for the pub.

Sometimes the best way to display a trophy is not on the wall. Here I made a rock with a fixed rod inside to swivel the mount in different directions if needed. Add a bit of grass or plants to the final display to finish it off next week.

With a good weather window I did a 39km solo run out to a reef and bagged out on the Spanish mackerel after 10 mins( only 1 per angler) so fished the bottom for 5 great Venus tusk fish and some sea bream. Trigger fish were in plagues so I had to wait for a decent fish to find the bait before the triggers did.

Today we launched from 1770 and despite the crap conditions headed to Bustard Head. Water was 21.6 degrees and we got soaked before getting there. Put 2 lures out and trolled up 2 mac tuna so headed East around 3 rock atolls. First 2 had nothing but the last one was loaded with bait and Spanish mackerel. So proud of Carlie to weather the rough seas and still catch her own Spanish. Her first and biggest fish she has caught. Plenty of sign on the bottom but the conditions worsened so we headed back with bag limit.

Finally the rut is in full swing here, heaps of quality bucks getting around and the cold mornings are noisy as hell until about 7.30am. It’s been 2 years since I shot a buck with a recurve and this average buck is the first with my Great Plains ebony and cocobolo 45lb shooting 340 spine carbon arrows and Kayuga 125gn heads
