Trumby this morning demonstrated exactly the concept I try to teach all of my horses and clients. This concept being that your horse can go from being excited and going forward to slowing down and relaxing. Trumby is switched on and listening to what I am asking as well as being relaxed enough to listen and do what he is being asked without panicking.
As horses are prey animals, they’re response to a stimulus is simply to flee. This becomes dangerous when you are in the saddle and that is how people end up falling off as the horse spooks and does what he is programmed to do....run as far away from that scary thing in the bushes as fast as possible!
If the horse is able to regulate himself and trust you as their partner when they get stressed out, they can relax, take a breathe and move on. This has been a common theme of off-the-track thoroughbreds. They should always have an eye on you. This is a combination of respect and building of trust.
Trumby has come a long way from the horse I was working with on the first day that I met him. He now has the mental skills he needs to deal with his surroundings and to what I am asking him and this allows him to relax and understand what I am asking of him. I’m so happy with his progress so far and am so excited to see where he goes! 😁
A snapshot of our trail ride last week with the lovely Summer on Arcaz! ☀️
An excellent jumping session this afternoon with the lovely Annie. I feel this mare has so much jumping potential! It’s not often you find a horse who is soft on the flat and also adjustable jumping. Such an incredible all rounder. Thank you Leeza for a great afternoon! 😁
