🐱 Cat Flu Basics: What You Need to Know 🐱

What is Cat Flu?
Cat flu, or feline upper respiratory infection (URI), is a common viral illness among cats. It's similar to a human cold and can affect cats of all ages, especially those in crowded or stressful environments.

Common Culprits:
The primary viruses responsible for cat flu are feline herpesvirus (FHV) and feline calicivirus (FCV). These viruses are highly contagious and can spread through direct contact with an infected cat or through contaminated objects.

Symptoms to Watch For:

Sneezing and coughing
Runny or stuffy nose
Watery eyes
Loss of appetite
Lethargy
Ulcers on the tongue or mouth

Treatment:
There is no cure for cat flu, but supportive care is essential. Start with a consult with the vet who may prescribe antiviral medications or antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infections.

Prevention:
Vaccination is crucial in preventing cat flu. Regular veterinary check-ups, especially for kittens and outdoor cats, can help catch and treat infections early.

If you are concerned your pet has cat flu, call our team for advice on 1800 232 423

Pet Pneumonia! Do you know the signs of pneumonia in your pet? 😷 Here are a few things every pet parent should know:

1️⃣ Keep an eye out for coughing, difficulty breathing, lethargy, and loss of appetite. If your fur friend is showing any of these symptoms, it's time for a vet visit!

2️⃣ Pneumonia can escalate rapidly. The sooner it's caught, the better the chances of a full recovery. Don't wait if you suspect something's not right!

3️⃣ Keep your pet's vaccinations up to date, and avoid exposing them to extreme weather conditions. A healthy pet is a resilient pet!

What can cause it?

Bacterial Infections: Bacteria such as Bordetella bronchiseptica and Streptococcus can lead to pneumonia in pets.

Viral Infections: Viruses like canine influenza virus and feline herpesvirus can contribute to pneumonia.

Fungal Infections: Fungi like Aspergillus or Pneumocystis can cause pneumonia, especially in animals with weakened immune systems.

Parasites: Heartworm and other parasites can lead to respiratory issues and, in severe cases, pneumonia.

Inhaling Irritants: Inhaling toxic fumes, smoke, or chemicals can irritate the respiratory system and lead to pneumonia.

Aspiration: Accidental inhalation of food, liquids, or foreign objects into the lungs can cause aspiration pneumonia, especially common in young pets.

Immune System Issues: Pets with compromised immune systems, whether due to age, chronic illness, or other factors, may be more susceptible to pneumonia.

Underlying Health Conditions: Conditions like heart disease or chronic respiratory conditions can increase the risk of pneumonia.

Environmental Factors: Exposure to extreme weather conditions, especially in young or senior pets, can contribute to respiratory problems.

Remember, early detection and veterinary care are crucial for a positive outcome. If you notice signs of respiratory distress or changes in your pet's behaviour, consult with our team promptly on 1800 232 423 🐾❀️

Considering pet insurance? Here are 5 PAW-some reasons why it's a game-changer for you and your furry companions! πŸ₯πŸ•πŸˆ

1️⃣ Healthcare Peace of Mind: 🌈 Accidents and illnesses can happen unexpectedly. Pet insurance ensures you're financially prepared to provide the best care without breaking the bank.

2️⃣ Routine Care Coverage: 🩺 From vaccinations to dental cleanings, some plans cover routine care. Keep those tails wagging and whiskers purring with preventive healthcare!

3️⃣ Emergency Savings: πŸš‘ Emergencies don't wait for the right moment. Pet insurance can be a lifesaver, covering unexpected vet bills and allowing you to focus on your pet's recovery, not the cost.

4️⃣ Breed-Specific Conditions: 🧬 Certain breeds are prone to specific health issues. Pet insurance tailors coverage to address breed-specific conditions, offering customized protection for your unique fur baby.

5️⃣ Budget-Friendly Options: πŸ’° Pet insurance plans come in various shapes and sizes. Find one that fits your budget and provides the coverage your pet deserves. Paying smaller fortnightly or monthly pre-planned payments can be a lot easier then a big lump-sum emergency

🐾 Your fur baby's health is priceless. Invest in their well-being and give yourself the gift of worry-free pet parenthood! 🎁🐾

Did you know that chronic kidney disease (CKD) can affect our furry friends too? 🐢🐱

It's a serious condition that can sneak up on your pets, and early detection is crucial! CKD is especially common in senior cats, but can impact dogs as well.

πŸ‘€ Watch out for signs like increased thirst, changes in appetite, and frequent urination. If you notice any of these, it's time for a vet visit ASAP!

πŸ’‰ To diagnose CKD generally we will run a set of in-house bloods as well as a urinalysis, and sometimes an ultrasound of the kidneys can assist with ruling out other factors to confirm the diagnosis of CKD.

πŸ₯ If your pet is diagnosed with CKD, our Emergency Animal Hospital is here 24/7 to provide the care your pets need. generally this will include medications, diet changes and IV fluid therapy.

Don't wait! Early intervention can make all the difference in managing CKD and keeping your fur babies happy and healthy.

If you have any concerns, please call our team on 1800 232 423

We all know accidents happen, and our fur babies can sometimes get into things they shouldn't.

In case your pup ever eats something dangerous, whether that be an object they shouldn't or even a toxin, it can be life-saving to get them to the vet ASAP so we can safely induce vomiting to try and remove the objects or toxins before they are ingested or absorbed.

Our clinical director Mykeala has a repeat offender when it comes to ingesting naughty things, her dog Jak has been brought in for emesis (induced vomiting) over 10 times, including again this weekend.

You can see from the look on his face his regret is only brief before he is back to being care free and ready to chew up something naughty again!

Inducing vomiting using special drugs we have can take just minutes, and a reversal agent can then be administered once your pet has brought up everything they need to, and they can usually return home within the hour so long as what they ingested was not toxic or unable to be brought up with the vomiting.

If you see your pet eat something they shouldn't or fear they may have, please call us immediately on 1800 232 423.

When it comes to the health and well-being of our beloved pets, every precaution is worth taking!

Pre-surgical blood testing is a crucial step in ensuring the safety of our furry friends undergoing medical procedures.

πŸ’‰ Baseline Health Assessment:
Pre-surgical blood testing provides veterinarians with a baseline understanding of a pet's overall health. This baseline is invaluable in identifying any underlying issues that may affect the surgical procedure or recovery.

πŸ’‰ Detecting Hidden Health Concerns:
Some health conditions may not be evident during a routine physical examination. Blood tests can reveal hidden issues such as organ dysfunction, infections, or blood clotting disorders, allowing veterinarians to address them before they become complications.

πŸ’‰ Tailored Anaesthetic Plans:
Anaesthesia is a critical component of surgeries, and different pets may react differently to anaesthesia. Blood testing helps veterinarians customize the anaesthetic plan based on the individual health needs of the pet, minimizing risks during the procedure.

πŸ’‰ Reducing Surgical Complications:
Identifying and addressing potential complications before surgery significantly reduces the risk of complications during and after the procedure. This proactive approach contributes to a smoother surgical experience and a faster, safer recovery for the pet.

πŸ’‰ Guiding Postoperative Care:
Knowledge gained from pre-surgical blood tests guides postoperative care. Veterinarians can tailor pain management, monitoring, and recovery protocols to address any specific health considerations identified in the blood work.

πŸ’‰ Ensuring a Safer Surgical Experience:
Ultimately, pre-surgical blood testing is about ensuring the safety and well-being of our furry companions. It's a proactive measure that reflects a commitment to providing the highest standard of care for pets undergoing surgical procedures.

If you have a female pet that hasn't been desexed yet, you need to know about Pyometra!

Pyometra, a potentially life-threatening condition, lurks in the shadows of our pets' reproductive systems. This uterine infection affects unspayed female dogs and cats, posing a serious risk to their health.

Understanding Pyometra:
Pyometra occurs when the uterus fills with pus, often a result of hormonal changes during a pet's estrus (heat) cycle. This condition primarily affects older unspayed females, but it can occur in any sexually intact female.

Symptoms:
Watch for signs such as lethargy, increased thirst, vomiting, and a purulent vaginal discharge. In severe cases, pyometra can lead to a life-threatening condition, requiring emergency medical intervention.

Prevention:
Desexing is a simple and 100% effective prevention to ensure your pet will never suffer from pyometra.

If you are concerned your pet may be displaying symptoms of this infection, please contact us immediately on 1800 232 423, as the earlier treatment starts, the better the outcome for your pet!

While grapes may seem like a harmless snack for us, they pose a severe threat to our furry companions πŸ‡

What Makes Grapes Dangerous?
The exact substance in grapes and raisins that causes toxicity in pets is yet to be identified, but the consequences are clear. Dogs of any breed, size, or age can be affected, and even a small amount of grapes can lead to serious health issues.

Symptoms of Grape Toxicity:
The symptoms of grape toxicity can manifest within hours of ingestion. Watch out for signs such as vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain. In severe cases, pets may experience kidney failure, which can be fatal if not addressed promptly.

Immediate Action:
If you suspect your pet has ingested grapes or raisins and shows any signs of toxicity, seek immediate veterinary attention. Early intervention is crucial to prevent the progression of the toxic effects.

Call us on 1800 232 423 if you have any concerns regarding grape toxicity and your pets!

07/11/2023

Has your pet ever been sick with a symptom such as vomiting, but your vet wants to run tests rather then just give medication?

Unfortunately as skilled as our veterinarians are, we cannot simply know what condition or illness your pet may be suffering from simply from a physical examination.

Diagnostics play a crucial role in treating symptoms like vomiting for several reasons:

πŸ”¬ Identifying Underlying Causes:
Vomiting is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can result from various underlying issues such as infections, dietary indiscretion, toxins, organ dysfunction, or more serious conditions like gastrointestinal obstruction. Diagnostics help pinpoint the root cause, allowing for targeted and effective treatment.

πŸ”¬ Tailored Treatment Plans:
Different causes of vomiting require different treatment approaches. Once the specific cause is identified through diagnostics, veterinarians can develop a tailored treatment plan. For example, bacterial infections may require antibiotics, while obstructions may need surgery.

πŸ”¬ Assessing Severity:
Diagnostics help assess the severity of the condition. This is crucial for determining the appropriate level of intervention. Mild cases of vomiting may resolve with supportive care, while severe or persistent cases may require more intensive treatments.

In order to have the facilities and equipment to run effective and fast diagnostics right here in our hospital, we need to invest in extensive and expensive diagnostic equipment such as advanced ultrasound, x-ray, various blood testing machines and more!

We strongly encourage pet owners to consider investing in pet insurance for their pet, so if they do fall ill especially in an after-hours or emergency setting, you do not need to worry about the financial side of seeking the care they require, when they require it.

Pet insurance allows us to perform the highest standards of care for your pet, every time.

Did you know puppies need to be wormed every 2 weeks until 16 weeks of age?

Regular deworming with a reliable product like Drontal could save your puppies life from serious conditions such as a hookworm infestation.

Hookworms are intestinal parasites that latch onto the lining of a dog's small intestine, feeding on their host's blood. Puppies are particularly vulnerable as they can contract hookworms from their mother during pregnancy or through nursing. These parasites can also be present in contaminated soil, making curious pups susceptible to ingestion during outdoor exploration.

Detecting hookworm infection in puppies can be tricky, as symptoms may not be immediately apparent. Watch out for signs such as lethargy, diarrhoea, swollen abdomen, weight loss and a dull coat.

Puppies with severe infections go on to develop anaemia, which can require a blood transfusion to correct, this can be life-threatening to young pups.

Our hospital sees many sick puppies with severe hookworm infestations, requiring extensive and costly treatment, all of which is completely avoidable with a simple and affordable worming product.

If you are concerned your pup may be suffering from hookworm, please seek veterinary assistance ASAP or call our tam on 1800 232 423.

The Window to Their World: Why Pet Eye Injuries Demand Swift Action πŸ‘€

When it comes to eye injuries, time is of the essence, and immediate attention is paramount. Here's a glimpse into why your fur baby's peepers deserve rapid response from an emergency animal hospital.

1. Sensitivity Beyond Words:
A pet's eyes are incredibly sensitive, and any injury, no matter how small, can cause significant discomfort. Scratches, foreign objects, or even mild irritations can escalate rapidly, leading to pain and potential vision loss.

2. Silent Suffering:
Pets are masters at hiding pain, and eye injuries are no exception. Unlike a limp or a whimper, signs of ocular distress might be subtleβ€”an extra blink, rubbing their eyes, or excessive tearing. By the time visible symptoms emerge, the issue may have progressed, making swift intervention crucial.

3. Rapid Escalation:
What may start as a minor irritation can rapidly escalate into a more severe problem. Infections, corneal ulcers, or glaucoma can develop, posing not only a threat to their vision but also to the health of the entire eye. Early detection and intervention can prevent these issues from spiralling out of control.

4. The Unique Language of Eyes:
Unlike other injuries, eye issues often demand specialized expertise. The intricate anatomy of the eye requires a trained eye (pun intended!) to diagnose and treat effectively. Emergency animal hospitals are equipped with skilled professionals who understand the unique language of pet eyes, ensuring accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment.

Seeking immediate attention from an emergency animal hospital is not just about addressing the present issue but safeguarding the window to your pet's worldβ€”their eyes. After all, in their eyes, you'll find a world of trust, love, and unwavering companionship.

If your pet suffers an eye injury after hours, please call our team immediately on 1800 232 423 πŸ“ž

πŸŽƒπŸ‘» Beware: Halloween Hazards Lurk! πŸ‘»πŸŽƒ

As Halloween has grown in popularity in Australia, here is a friendly reminder about the not-so-purrfect aspects of Halloween for our furry friends. Let's make sure this holiday is all treats and no tricks for our pets! 🍬🚫🐱🐢

🚨 HAUNTING HAZARDS TO WATCH OUT FOR:

1️⃣ Tricky Treats: Chocolate might be heavenly for us, but it's a big no-no for our pets. Keep the candy bowl out of their reach to avoid a spooky trip to the emergency room.

2️⃣ Costume Catastrophes: While our pets look adorable in costumes, not all of them enjoy the dress-up game. Make sure costumes are comfortable, and never leave your pet unattended in them. A quick photo op is great, but safety first!

3️⃣ Pumpkin Perils: Pumpkins are fall favourites, but beware of lit candles in Jack-o'-lanterns. Curious pets and open flames don't mix well.

4️⃣ Doorbell Drama: Constant doorbell ringing and spooky noises can stress out our pets. Create a safe haven for them away from the commotion, with their favourite toys and a cozy spot.

5️⃣ Escape Artists: With the constant opening and closing of doors, there's a higher chance of pets sneaking out. Keep a watchful eye on them, and ensure they have proper identification, just in case they decide to go on a Halloween adventure.

πŸŽƒ OUR EMERGENCY ANIMAL HOSPITAL IS HERE TO HELP!
If the unexpected haunts your furry friend this Halloween, remember, we're just a call away on 1800 232 423. Our team is ready to provide expert care and spooky-season solutions to keep tails wagging and kitties purring! πŸ₯πŸš‘πŸ‘»

Planning a road trip with your four-legged friend? πŸš™πŸ’¨

🌟 Top Tips for Traveling Safely with Pets:

- Secure Restraints: Just like we buckle up, our pets need to be secured too! Use a pet seatbelt, travel crate, or a car barrier to keep them safe and prevent distractions.

- Cozy Comfort Zone: Make their space comfy! Line the crate with familiar blankets and toys to create a stress-free environment.

- Hydration Station: Keep your fur baby hydrated on the road if going for a longer trip. Bring a spill-proof bowl and fresh water to keep them cool.

- Frequent Pit Stops: Breaks are crucial for pets to stretch their legs, do their business, and get some fresh air. Plan for pit stops along the way on lengthy road trips.

- Never Leave Alone: Never leave your pet unattended in a hot carβ€”even with the windows cracked. Temperatures can rise rapidly, posing a serious risk.

- Familiar Scents: Bring along their favourite toys or a blanket with familiar scents to ease any travel anxiety.

🐾🌼 Insect Bites and Hives in Pets! 🌼🐝

As the warm weather lingers, so do the buzzing critters that can give our fur babies a not-so-welcome surprise. 🐜🦟 Let's chat about something that might bug your petsβ€”Insect Bites and Hives! πŸš¨βœ‹

πŸ‘€ SIGNS TO WATCH OUT FOR:
1️⃣ Itchy Business: If your pet is scratching more than usual or doing a funky dance, it might be the aftermath of a bug's unwelcome nibble.

2️⃣ Swelling and Redness: Keep an eye out for swelling, redness, or raised bumpsβ€”signs that your pet might have had a not-so-friendly encounter with a critter.

3️⃣ Hive Hysteria: Just like us, pets can get hives too! Watch for clusters of swollen, red welts on their skin. Hives are like a pet's way of saying, "Hey, something's not right here!"

πŸš‘ WHY ACT SWIFTLY?

1️⃣ Allergic Avalanche: Some pets can have allergic reactions to insect bites, leading to a more severe response. Quick action can nip the allergic cascade in the bud.

2️⃣ Itch Relief Express: Imagine the itchiest itch you've ever had. Now imagine not being able to tell someone about it. Let's help our fur friends find relief ASAP!

3️⃣ Prevent the Sting Spread: Certain insect bites can lead to infections if left untreated. By addressing it promptly, you're not only helping your pet feel better but also preventing secondary complications.
