Dog World Magazine Article - Body Condition Scoring For Dogs

Wondering if your dog may be under or overweight? Every dog’s ideal weight is different. A body condition score is a tool that you can use in between vet visits to monitor your dog’s weight and help them stay in a healthy range.

What is a body condition score in dogs? A body condition score (BCS) is a number that acts as a measure of a dog’s body fat, roughly similar to body mass index (BMI) in humans. There are two versions of the scale. One scale ranges from one to five. The other ranges from one to nine. Some veterinarians, including the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), use the nine-point scale. Others use the five-point scale, which can also be converted into nine points using halves of each number (1.5, 2.5, etc.). Veterinarians often use the nine-point scale for small animals, while the five-point scale is more common for large animals.

Why is it important to do puppy socialisation in the first few weeks of bringing your puppy home🐾

As a breeder of a large breed dog, I know the importance of having a good mannered well socialised dog. It makes life for you and your dog easy. The world is less scary and they'll learn to trust your not going to put them in harms way.

To do this, takes time....the first 16 weeks of your pups life is a full time job for YOU.
Take your pup everywhere. Sports, school pick up, sit outside the shops. Allow people to pat your pup, let them see and meet other dogs. Everything you want your dog to do as an adult do now.
Be careful where you take them in regards to areas of high activity of potential non vaccinated dogs. Pet shops and dog parks are good examples. Don't let your pup drink from a communal bowl.
There are plenty of places to take your pup where it's safe - Bunnings trips where they can be safely put in a trolley and still see their world.

Above is what everyone with a puppy should be ready to do when you plan to purchase your pup and its FREE...your pup needs your time, remember they are babies. This period isn't long, you as an owner should enjoy this time, it's part of owning a pet.

For those who need extra help or just want to be involved with having some fun with a group of like minded people. Our puppy classes are designed to be fun and interactive for people and pups.
Classes are run on a Wednesday or Thursday night. Classes start at 6 pm. We run classes between the Bungendore showground and the vet clinic.

Your trainers -
Kay Dodds - Vet nurse Bungendore, Trainer. I also breed and show Cane Corso.
Di Gooding - lecturer at ANU animal ethics. Trainer who also breeds and shows Chow Chow and Shai pei both ancient breeds
Sonja Abernathy - Trainer, owner of German shepherds. Has her own obedience training classes and a program that follows puppy classes

As you can see we all have our own dogs. Guardians, strong headed breeds. We know dogs. Between us we have a wealth of knowledge and experience.

If you get a few minutes, watch "that dog geek" on socialisation it's a very simple but correct way to socialise your pup.

Please be patient with your with your adolescent pups 🐾

Adolescence occurs between six months and 18 months of age—a time when guardians typically struggle the most with their dogs. Some guardians are so overwhelmed and underprepared for this developmental stage of their dog’s life, they choose to surrender the dog to a local shelter or rescue group. In a recent study published in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science found that the majority of the surrendered dogs (47.7 percent) ) were between 5 months and 3 years of age (M.D. Salman,John G. New, Jr.,Janet M. Scarlett,Philip H. Kass,Rebecca Ruch-Gallie &Suzanne Hetts, 2010)

The neurobiology of adolescence is fascinating, with some key events that alter both the structure and function of the brain.

During canine adolescence, changing s*x hormones effect the animals stress responses. Adolescent dogs have a decreased ability to process information they are receiving from the environment including the presence of dogs, vehicles, people, or really anything around them. They behave in ways that might feel frustrating or upsetting for the dog’s person.

The connectivity between the frontal cortex (responsible for decision making) and amygdala (responsible for emotional processing) decreases, resulting in less behavioral control. We see increased risk taking and more sensitivity to fear.

So what does this mean? This could mean that what was once no big deal to the dog now feels scary; what was once easy to do is now stressful; what once made sense is now confusing. At times, the world can feel like ‘too much’ for the adolescent dog.

As your puppy undergoes this transition into adulthood their inner world is intense, even chaotic. Many pet owners experience an increase in undesirable behavior and find themselves becoming increasingly frustrated. In turn, our own frustration and impatience can cause us to act unpredictably. This adds to our puppy’s inner turmoil. When the inside and the outside are both unpredictable it can be difficult for our dogs to adjust.

If you have an adolescent dog, what can you do? You can give your dog the time and space to observe what is going on around them when on leash at a distance away from the activity when possible. You can give your dog long walks to sniff and explore in nature, giving their brain time to decompress. You can offer your dog a quiet space to sleep so that they can consolidate memories effectively. You can continue training various skills, breaking them down into easier steps that can be generously reinforced.

By understanding what our adolescent dog is experiencing we gain greater compassion and understanding. When we approach adolescence with patience we create a world that is predictable and gentle so our puppies grow up to be their best adult selves.
