"I WAS TTTHHHHIIIISSSSS BRAVE TODAY".
Recently Whisky celebrated his 5th birthday. Whisky belongs to Dr Stacy and he is a recent addition (a therapy dog for Edna!!). He is a beautiful, relaxed boy who loves playing ball and sleeping on the couch. He got a big happy birthday hug and a steak for his birthday. I am sure we aren't the only ones that love to celebrate our pet's birthdays- we would love to see your pics!
We have recently started stocking these new dental chews called Veggiedent. They are great for dogs that are on a fat restricted diet or for those dogs trying to lose weight, that require dental prophylaxis. They passed the taste test when Mumma Cat ripped open the bag and gave them a try (anyone looking for a cat free to good home??!!).
"The lady in the shop said they were all the rage and that I look fabulous"..... but in all seriousness, fly veils and eye protection is no joke! This poor llama had damaged the surface of its eye accidently and the fly veil was placed to protect the eye from further damage, offer a darkened environment, and to keep flies and other material away from the eye whilst it heals. Added bonus that they look super fashionable.
You may have noticed one of our wonderful receptionist's Suzie has been missing from our front desk for the last few months. Suzie has been travelling the world and having the most amazing adventure. She will be returning in the next few weeks but part of her trip included being able to attend the Olympics in Paris. What an amazing once in a lifetime opportunity. The photos made us all very jealous. Getting to attend some of the equestrian would have been a dream come true! We love you Suzie and can't wait for you to be home.
We would like to welcome ANDY to the Bungendore Vet family. Amelia, our amazing reception co-ordinator, has recently welcomed Andy to her home and he is fitting in perfectly. He is such a handsome, well-mannered little man. Come give him some cuddles!
This is Dr Helena doing a dental. This is her power stance. This is when Dr Helena means business.
This is Grace. Grace loves to do faecal egg counts for your large animals. Nothing brings her more joy than counting worm eggs under a microscope. Bring in a sample and get an enthusiastic thumbs up from Grace!
When you need your feet done and you are super chill about it…. There aren’t too many horses that lie down to have their feet examined but it definitely makes it easier on our backs!!
A great example of when an owner picks the perfect name for their new puppy… this is PEANUT and he is THE CUTEST!!!
IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION FOR COUNCIL REGISTRATION OF PUPS AND KITTENS. This is really important for any new owners of young puppies and kittens, and all our breeders.
As most of you already know, Avian Influenza has been detected in Canberra. Currently there are no confirmed cases in the Bungendore area but we are staying vigilant. Avian Influenza is very easily transmitted by moving sick birds, as well as on contaminated cages, vehicles, clothing or boots. For this reason it is important that birds are only being transported when absolutely necessary in our area and appropriate PPE should be worn when handling sick birds. If you have a bird showing any signs of unwell (especially respiratory or neurological signs) please contact us or the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline below.
We are pretty sure she was a super model in a past life…..
If anyone is asking, THIS is how cold it was this morning 😆
Flynn's Walk is a charity that is raising awareness for a cause close to our hearts. Flynn’s Walk was started in 2018 following the incredibly sad loss of Dr Flynn Hargreaves (BVSc). Flynn died by su***de and the walk was created to honour his memory, bring together the community and spread awareness of the mental health issues faced by veterinary professionals in their line of work. The walk will be held in Canberra on Sunday 22nd September- it would be great to see some of the community there. Scan the QR code below to register.
Recently the local preschool let us know their resident blue tongue lizard had a sore eye. One of our highly trained nurses who is also an experienced wildlife carer took him into care and was able to rehabilitate him. After he was released back to the very capable preschoolers, we received this adorable thank you card. This is why we do our jobs. We are so lucky to be apart of such a great community. Hopefully a few vet nurses and vets in the making!
We have launched our new website and we would love for you to take a look. There is loads of helpful info on there, as well as the ability to book small animal appointments. You can also request a large animal appointment online now too!! We would love to hear your feedback.
When you are moving house and your favourite chook just doesn’t want to be left behind…. Ursi Dinosaur the australorp cross chicken was very interested when Amelia, our receptionist was moving home. She also likes to lay eggs in the dog kennel…. Can’t tell if she is brilliant or just brazen.
Welcome to the Bungendore vet family Jimmy the Labrador and Dallas the border collie!! These two adorable creatures are new additions for two of our wonderful nurses. They are hanging out at the clinic so come for puppy cuddles!
We recently had a dog present with back pain. We decided to perform spinal radiographs to ascertain the cause. On taking the X-rays, we found the outline of one AirPod in the stomach of the dog as a completely incidental finding! We were able to make the dog vomit up the AirPod without having to perform surgery. The owner advised that he had lost the AirPod a few months earlier and had assumed his toddler and taken it. He could see that the AirPod was in the house but couldn’t locate it!! We don’t know if the AirPod still worked and we are not sure that the owner was too keen to find out after where it had been!
Last weekend the team had the opportunity to do a paint and sip class. It was a lovely afternoon filled with lots of laughs. Sometimes our jobs can be stressful, so it is nice to do fun things together and spend time as a team outside of work. We are so lucky to have such a great bunch of artists to work with… some real talent here!!
Introducing BRYAN to the Bungendore Vet family. Bryan is a beautiful purebred Cane Corso owned by our wonderful nurse Kay, who also runs our puppy preschool. You should definitely get in for puppy cuddles now…. He will be too big to lift VERY soon. Welcome Bryan!
HOW IN THE WORLD DID WE MISS SHARING THIS PHOTO!!!!! This is Archie the cairn terrier and he was in a little while ago for his puppy vaccinations. The guy knows how to strike a pose!!! ADORABLE.
CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO!!! A little photo montage of our year in review… some great pics in here of the best team ever!!!
Another glowing review for Dr Clem and her acupuncture.... “my border collie Mac is only a young dog and lives with hip dysplasia, which can result in him being sore and uncomfortable. Mac has recently started acupuncture sessions with Dr Clem and I am really pleased with the results. Mac is so happy with Dr Clem’s acupuncture, during treatment Mac is totally relaxed and falls asleep. By the time we get home he has recharged and is really animated and playful, and has clearly experienced relief from the treatment. Huge thanks to Dr Clem, I’m really grateful to have this treatment option for my best mate”.
We are still experiencing snake encounters and snake bites in our small animals. PLEASE CONTINUE TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS like walking your dog on lead and supervising your cat outside (or leaving them inside for a little longer!). Unfortunately it’s not quite cold enough yet to get complacent.
Free horse poo! Bring a trailer and do your garden a favour. Just give us a call before you come.
I think the look on Chris’ face in this pic says it all!!! Baby animals are the best.

This is a video of Megan, one of our vets, administering an inhalant drug to a horse named Ginger with a spacer. She has been diagnosed with an inflammatory condition of her lower airways. Steroids are being administered directly into her airways, similar to how it is used in a person with asthma. As you can see in the video, Ginger is tolerating it really well. It is great to see all the different ways we can administer medications and what can be achieved with some desensitisation training and a calm horse.
Sound on for this one!!! Dennis was a poddy lamb that was raised by our receptionist, Suzie. Once he was grown, he went to live on a farm like a real sheep. Recently Suzie went to visit him and we love how he totally remembered her!! Sheep make such wonderful pets - they can be so loving.
Ever wondered what it looks like to pregnancy test a cow?? Well wonder no more… this is Dr Chris showing us how it is done. Chris is using an ultrasound probe rectally to visualise the uterus. As you can see, he is a pro!
HORSE MANURE!!!! We have an abundance of it and mamma cat, Basil and stew-it are sick of looking at it! If you want some, give us a call and bring a trailer. First in, best dressed. Run don’t walk.
Dr Clem attended an emergency over the weekend where a mare was very unwell post foaling. Her foal was only 15 hours old. Unfortunately the mare could not be saved. The experienced owners at Coliban Quarter Horses have been bottle feeding the foal over the weekend. Today he was successfully introduced to his new mum who already has a 1 week old baby of her own. It takes a special kind of mare to take a second foal, so this is very special to watch.
This is what it looks like to vaccinate 10 puppies! These adorable chow puppies received their first vaccination and microchip today at the owner’s property. It may look like it was recorded in fast forward, but it’s just that Stacy moves really, really fast ;)
A few weeks ago we posted about a lost kitten that was very sick who had been dropped at the clinic. He wasn’t microchipped and no owner came forward. He was taken into care by one of our nurses and we are please to announce he is thriving! His name is Derrick and the nurse who was caring for him has decided to keep him! This is Harlow letting Derrick know he is loved and very welcome in his new home.
Mamma cat is just a constant source of entertainment for all of us here at Bungendore Vet…. Here she is taking a stallion for a walk. She has no fear (and has picked a very lovely boy to play with).
Was anyone else’s furry friend absolutely obsessed with Muster Dogs as much as our mate Ludo was? As you can see he was glued to the screen (unfortunately though his owner reports he did not pick up any new tricks). What a great show and very interesting viewing for every member of the family!
I think most of our clients have had the pleasure of meeting Stewit, but you may not of had the pleasure of seeing him gracefully sprint for treats. If you too want to see how excited he gets for a carrot stick, you are most welcome to bring him some anytime. He will definitely love you forever (or at least until someone else brings him more).
Check out these two cuties enjoying swims! They are wood duck siblings separated from their family by an unfortunate incident who are now in care with one of our vet nurses. Once they are old enough and taught to fend for themselves, they’ll be released back into the wild. If you find ducklings on their own, collect them to keep them safe and warm before checking the area for the rest of their family. If you can’t find any, make detailed notes on the area you found them and contact Wildcare or take them to the nearest vet.
It may not be what she had in mind for her holiday but Dr. Clem’s pets are making the most of it and keeping her entertained. How did your pets help you enjoy your holiday at home?
Before your cat gets too comfortable with their new fit selves - and start showing off to the dog - let’s get started on canine weight health! Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be discussing general guidelines as well as specific tips for fitness and weight loss for different breeds and sizes. Please note that advice given in our posts is aimed at pets who have a bit extra on them to love but are otherwise healthy. If your pet has, or your think they may have, an underlying medical issue, or has not had an annual health check within the past year, please make an appointment to see a vet before beginning any diet or fitness regime.
