Grooming at Monty’s…
There seems to be some confusion and discussion… are we or aren’t we?
Well that depends if your dog is a special needs client. This means we are accepting post surgical (ACL, TPLO etc) dogs with skin issues (dermatitis, serious allergies etc) senior dogs who would have difficulty standing for the duration of a groom and whom require support.
We are also providing the following grooming services for all other dogs: desheds, washes, nail trims, a**l gland expression and shampoo/hygiene trims (face, feet, bottom is trimmed) Cooper (pictured below) is an example of our shampoo/hygiene service.
Additionally, we have also kept several of our gentle souls who we can train our students with in the future (If your dog is one of these we will send out reminders for your appointments)
We have a list of recommended groomers for those who may be of a need. Please give the centre a call on 97794005.

Huge appreciation going out to WA Dog Grooming & Clipping Academy!
At Monty's we perform a lot of deshed grooms. We blew up the motor on our deshed blow dryer at the end of last week.
In stepped Kim and her team, and by Friday afternoon our new ChallengAir AirMax dryer and 15L of Furex Progroom products were on their way to Bussleton. By Tuesday morning our new dryer and other products were sitting in reception after the long weekend!
WADGA are always professional and nothing is ever too much trouble. It really takes the stress out of getting our wholesale grooming products delivered.
Wishing WA Dog Grooming & Clipping Academy every success and we can't wait to order more in the future!

Update 2: we’re back!

As of 5.00pm Tuesday 6/6 we still haven’t got reliable service so the phone is out and emails aren’t coming through. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Dear valued clients,

I assure you all that Monty's is NOT for sale.

There will, however, be some changes afoot.

From Sunday 14th May Monty's will no longer offer full grooming services. This means that we will only offer de-sheds, hygiene trims, luxury washes, and nail clipping appointments in the grooming salon.

If you have a wash + trim or de-shed appointment booked there should be no interruption to your bookings. However full grooms including clip offs and styling will cease after Sunday 14th May.

If you are unsure if your existing booking applies, please contact us for clarification. Our email address is

We are providing a list of alternative groomers that we recommend in the area, so feel free to contact us via email.

We'd like to thank all of our grooming clients for your support over the past 4 years.

In February we were lucky enough to have International animal photographer Pam Langrish visit the Centre. Pam owns KA9 Photography in UK and very kindly offered to take some photos of the beautiful daycare dogs here at Monty's.

After spending 3 days and taking over 10,000 images Pam has generously given the photographs to the owners free of charge. (Owners, if you are sharing Pam's beautiful pictures on social media could you please remember to acknowledge KA9 Photography)

For those of you who don't know who Pam is...
Pam Langrish is proving to be one of the world’s leading dog photographers with her images appearing in all the international calendars as well as magazines and books. Leaving her job as Jilly Cooper’s PA to take up photography, she has demonstrated a real talent for photographing dogs in natural surroundings. Now after 15 years, Pam has built up a library of over 150,000 images and has recently illustrated 3 books.

Apart from being an amazing photographer she is also one the most down to Earth and most loveliest people you could ever wish to meet. Oh, and did I mention she's crazy about dogs!

We'll be posting a selection of Pam's wonderful photos here over the next few weeks. Thank you Pam for capturing that special quality in each dog you photographed. We have some very appreciative owners and staff.

Something we hear about more and more frequently. A good read for those who are dealing with this.

REACTIVITY MISUNDERSTOOD
Reactive dogs are often misunderstood. A dog that is reacting to a situation is not trying to be difficult, they are having a difficult time coping with that particular situation and are trying their best to make the scary thing go away.
Reactivity is generally triggered by the emotion of fear. The fear of whatever is scaring them, a fear of a valuable possession being taken away or a fear of a strange person or animal coming into their territory. Anxiety, stress, over excitement, over stimulation, feeling overwhelmed, trigger stacking, or a dog that is tired, in pain or even has chronic itching will often feel irritable and may be reactive in certain situations. If their reactivity is successful in making the scary thing go away, it becomes a rewarding behaviour because it’s something that works for them and it makes them feel better.
It’s not easy to be the owner of a reactive dog. One of my dogs is reactive and I know first-hand how dogs like this can leave you feeling embarrassed, ashamed, angry or frustrated. Why do they have to be so difficult, why can’t they just behave normally? Everyone is looking at me, judging me, thinking that I’m a bad owner, have no training skills, can’t control my dog or have a vicious dog that shouldn’t be taken out in public.
As hard as it may be, we need to take the focus off how we as owners feel about their reactivity and focus on how our dogs are feeling and what is causing their reaction. Whatever it is, it’s not something our dogs can overcome on their own and we need to take steps to help them cope. Reactive dogs need compassion, understanding, management, force free, positive reinforcement interventions and decompression – (a return to a normal, more relaxed state after a period of intense stress, psychological pressure, or urgent activity). These techniques take time and patience but are so important in helping our dogs to feel safe and learn more acceptable ways of coping.
I have learnt through many mistakes, to recognise what triggers my reactive dog and take steps to either avoid those situations, provide enough distance, or provide her with an alternative choice where she feels safe and in control of her environment. There will always be unexpected triggers around the next corner that are not within our control, but doing all we can to manage these triggers has immeasurable benefits.

Something to consider:

What do you mean, don't walk my dog??! 😯

For certain dogs, daily walks are not the best choice for their well-being.

This is a controversial statement, but it’s true for some. This can be an incredibly alien concept for those of us with high-energy breeds, that are stereotypically impossible to wear out. Yet, it’s most commonly these intense, high-drive breeds who benefit from skipping a walk most of all.

If your dog becomes stressed when they leave the house or if they’re reactive and fearful of the outside world, then being walked every day can be too much for them to cope with. They have no chance to recover from their stressful encounters before they find themselves reliving them again the next day.

Choosing not to walk your dog every day is often met with horror. Won’t they destroy the house? Aren’t they hyperactive? How do you cope with all their extra energy?

It’s not as straightforward as simply stopping daily walks and not replacing them with anything else. That would be a recipe for disaster! Instead, you need to fill their time with mental enrichment, relaxation opportunities and ample chances to feel calm.

If your dog enjoys their daily walks, then great! But don’t feel guilty if this routine is not for your own dog, after all you know them best!
